To build one that works, plan its footprint around the crops and room to work, check local restrictions, choose a frame and netting suited to the site, and fit the netting tautly with every edge secured. There is no single standard cage height or footprint: both depend on the plants, access needs, and local rules.
1. Map the fruit bed and leave room to work
Mark the area the cage needs to enclose, then include space to reach plants for watering, pruning, and picking. Use the mature planting layout—not just the plants’ current size—to estimate the footprint. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) gives these crop-spacing examples:
| Crop | RHS spacing example | What it means for the cage |
|---|---|---|
| Blackcurrants | 1 m by 1.5 m | Allow room for the planting layout and access around the bushes. |
| Blueberries | 1.5 m by 1.5 m | Use the larger spacing example when planning a blueberry area. |
| Strawberries | 0.3 m by 0.75 m | Rows may need less plant spacing, but still leave a practical route for picking and maintenance. |
These are illustrative crop-spacing figures from the RHS Campaign for School Gardening, not recommended cage dimensions. The full cage must also account for paths, the shape of the bed, and any plants that need to remain outside it.
2. Check height and site rules before buying materials
Choose a height that suits the crops and lets you carry out routine work inside the cage, then check the rules that apply to your site. An allotment agreement may set limits on height, position, or mesh. For example, Hart District Council’s Green Garden Policies, reviewed 24 April 2024, allow fruit cages up to 7 ft high at its sites. That is a local policy limit, not a general maximum for fruit cages. Check your own allotment agreement or local garden rules before construction.

Local specifications may also govern the netting. Bishop’s Castle Allotments’ specification for permanent netted cages, adopted 19 March 2024, is one example described below; it should not be treated as a universal standard.
3. Choose the frame and plan an access opening
The RHS describes fruit cages as large structures with wooden or metal frames and netted sides. The sources do not establish a universally best frame material or prescribe post sizes, footing methods, or a doorway design. Decide based on the cage’s size, site, available materials, and the way you plan to maintain it.

Wood or metal?
Wood and metal are both frame options. Compare them for the specific job: how readily you can work with the material, its expected durability in your conditions, its cost, and whether it can support the netting over the cage’s span. Those are practical selection considerations rather than performance rankings established by the RHS.
Make access part of the layout
Plan an opening large enough to carry picking containers and tools through comfortably. Position it so it does not make routine access to the plants awkward. The exact opening and how it closes are design choices; no universal doorway dimensions are established in the cited guidance.

4. Select netting for pest exclusion and pollination
Choose netting for the protection you need, while considering whether pollinators must reach the flowers. The RHS advises using fruit-garden netting that allows bees through where pollination is required. Check the product’s mesh and suitability for your crop and the pests you are trying to exclude rather than assuming every net will serve the same purpose.
For comparison, Bishop’s Castle Allotments specifies mesh no larger than 19 mm for permanent cages. This is a requirement in that allotment’s specification, not a universal mesh standard. Follow the relevant rules for your site and crop.

5. Build the frame, fit the netting, and close the gaps
- Set out the frame. Mark the planned footprint and place the frame supports to suit the chosen material, cage dimensions, and ground conditions. The sources do not prescribe a general post spacing or footing method.
- Provide support for the netting. Add suitable support across the frame so the netting can be secured without sagging. Bishop’s Castle Allotments calls for mesh to be supported at least every 2 m in its permanent-cage specification; treat that figure as a local requirement, not a universal design rule.
- Attach the netting tautly. Fasten it securely to the frame and avoid loose sections that can sag onto fruit or plants. The RHS advises raising netting above the fruit, keeping it taut, and fastening it securely, particularly in its guidance on protecting grapes.
- Secure the bottom edge. Close the gap between the netting and the ground so birds cannot get underneath. Bishop’s Castle’s local specification calls for the bottom skirt to be firmly anchored with no gaps.
- Check the whole enclosure. Inspect joins, corners, the access opening, and the bottom edge for gaps or loose attachments. Repair holes promptly; Bishop’s Castle’s specification explicitly calls for prompt repairs.
For grapes, the RHS also notes that one or two vines can be grown inside a fruit cage. Where netting is raised over fruit instead, its guidance still emphasizes keeping it above the crop, taut, and securely fastened to reduce wildlife-entanglement risk.
6. Inspect and maintain the cage
Check the enclosure regularly, especially after weather that may loosen attachments. Look for holes, gaps at ground level, sagging netting, and sections that have come loose from their supports. Repair damage promptly and keep netting from resting on fruit or plants. These checks help maintain a secure barrier and reduce the risk of wildlife encountering loose or poorly secured netting.

- GREAT BAGS FOR COVERING PLANT: Bird netting for potted plant is sheer so the sun and rain come through but keeps, birds, rabbits, or squirrels away from your vegetables
- EASY TO PUT ON AND STRONG ENOUGH: To get insect netting over the tree, treat it like a long sock you're trying to put on a toddler, hold the open edges in your hands, and start bunching it up as you open it. Then put it over the tree
- PERFECT SIZE FOR MEDIUME BUSHES: Large enough size can well cover the larger plants in your garden, such as milkweed plants, dwarf dogwood, strawberries, tomatoes, blackberry, blueberries, cherries, pepper plants and flowers
- DRAWSTRING DESIGN: Drawstring on the bottom to safeguard any invaders. It not only covers the bush up well, keeps the squirrels from having their way with the berries, but also does a good job keeping insects out from under the mesh
Bishop’s Castle’s specification also rules out flapping, overlapping, or double layers for permanent cages at its allotments. If your site has a similar requirement, follow it; otherwise, keep the installation secure and check the applicable local specification.
Permanent cage or raised netting?
A permanent cage can protect a larger fruit-growing area and provide a fixed structure for netting. Raised netting may be a simpler option when only a small number of plants need protection. The RHS discusses both fruit cages and netting raised above grapes; whichever arrangement you use, its advice is to keep netting above the fruit, taut, and securely fastened.
