The important exception is that some other fastener shapes look star-like but are not compatible with a standard Torx bit.
Are star bits and Torx bits the same?
Usually, yes—when the screw has a standard internal six-lobe recess. SPAX describes Torx, Hexlobe and T-STAR as names used for that drive and notes that “star” is a popular generic name for it. SPAX explains the terminology in its FAQ.
The names alone do not identify every fastener profile. Check the recess itself and match the bit size; do not assume that every screw described as “star” takes a standard Torx bit.
How to choose the right bit
- Check the recess. A standard internal Torx/star drive has six lobes. If the profile differs, identify it before choosing a bit.
- Find the size. Use markings on the fastener or the manufacturer’s instructions when available. “Star” does not specify a T-size.
- Test the fit without forcing it. The bit should seat fully and fit firmly, without rocking. A loose or incomplete fit is a reason to stop and recheck the size or drive type.
When a different bit is needed
Security Torx: a pin in the center
If the screw recess has a raised center pin, use a security Torx bit with a hole through its tip to clear the pin. A standard solid-tip bit will not fit over it. Wera lists central-pin Torx bits in TX10, TX15, TX20, TX25 and TX30, with a 1/4-inch hexagon drive and a 25 mm blade; those are specifications for that product family, not sizes guaranteed to suit every pinned screw. Torx Plus: a distinct six-lobe profile
Torx Plus resembles standard Torx but is a distinct drive variant. Use a Torx Plus bit only when the fastener is identified as Torx Plus; do not select it solely because a recess has six lobes. AIMS Industrial’s drive comparison discusses Torx Plus alongside other profiles.
External Torx: a projecting head profile
External Torx is not an internal star-shaped recess. Its profile projects outward from the fastener head, so it calls for a matching socket rather than an ordinary internal Torx driver bit. AIMS Industrial distinguishes it from internal Torx in its comparison guide.

Pentalobe and other lookalikes
A five-point Pentalobe profile is not Torx-compatible. Other star-like shapes may also use different drives, so identify the recess rather than choosing by appearance alone. - Stop if the bit rocks, will not seat fully or appears to contact a center pin.
- Recheck the size and look for a security Torx, Torx Plus, external Torx or non-Torx profile.
- Use the fastener marking or manufacturer guidance where available rather than forcing a nearby size.
The available sources do not establish a general performance figure comparing Torx/star with other drive types, so a torque-capacity or stripping-rate advantage should not be assumed from the name alone.
