A single-pole switch operates one circuit path; a double-pole switch operates two paths together with one action. That distinction does not, by itself, tell you which switch is suitable: the circuit, load, device rating and local requirements all matter. Pole count is also different from throw count and from the number of places that control a light.
What do “pole” and “throw” mean?
Pole: the circuit paths operated
A switch’s pole count describes how many circuit paths it operates. A single-pole switch operates one path. A double-pole, single-throw (DPST) switch operates two independent paths together when it is switched. TE Connectivity’s explanation of switch poles and throws distinguishes these properties.
Throw: the available connection choices
Throw count describes the output connection options. A double-throw switch selects between outputs; “double throw” does not mean the same thing as “double pole.” For example, a double-throw safety switch may manually transfer a load between utility and generator sources, as described by Schneider Electric USA. That source-transfer function differs from operating two circuit paths together.
Single-pole vs double-pole switches
| Feature | Single-pole | Double-pole |
|---|---|---|
| Paths operated | One circuit path | Two circuit paths together |
| Commonly described use | Lighting or another load controlled from one location, as described by Schneider Electric and Legrand | Some heating appliances and other household or industrial equipment; suitability depends on the application and product rating, as described by Schneider Electric India and Eaton Australia |
| What the name alone establishes | One operated path | Two operated paths; it does not establish a universal wiring method or suitability for a particular load |
For ordinary lighting, a single-pole switch is commonly used when the light is controlled from one location. Double-pole switches appear in applications such as heating appliances, but those examples are not a blanket recommendation for a particular installation. Check the intended circuit and the switch’s specifications.

Is a double light switch the same as a double-pole switch?
No. A “double light switch” may mean two separate controls mounted together in one plate. Legrand describes this arrangement as two single-pole controls, not one double-pole switch. The terms refer to different things: the number of controls on a plate versus the number of circuit paths operated together.
What about a 3-way switch or control from multiple locations?
“3-way” is used in some regional terminology for lighting control involving more than one location. It is not simply another name for a double-pole switch. Before choosing a replacement, establish whether you need to operate two paths together, select between outputs, or control a light from multiple locations. The term and wiring conventions can vary by region; Eaton’s Australian explanation should be read in that geographic context.

- Two ground connection options: a green grounding screw and a self-grounding clip
- All Decora devices meet or exceed applicable UL, CSA and NOM testing standards
How to identify the right type for a project
- Identify the intended function. Determine whether the switch operates one path, two paths together, selects between outputs, or is part of a multi-location lighting arrangement.
- Check the circuit and load. Confirm what the switch will control rather than inferring suitability from its appearance or label alone.
- Read the product documentation. Verify the switch’s ratings and stated application against the circuit and load.
- Account for local requirements. Wiring terminology and conventions differ by country, and the sources do not establish a universal installation rule. Follow applicable local requirements; consult a qualified electrician if the circuit or replacement is uncertain.
This is a terminology guide, not an installation procedure or code determination. Do not work on energized equipment. For an actual installation, rely on the switch documentation and requirements applicable where the work is being done.
