In a 2021 account by Zoe Skyforest, Integza’s radial-flow prototype ran for about ten seconds before components began melting. The project is useful as a case study in fabrication challenges—not as a design recipe or proof that the engine was safe or reliable.
What happened in the home-shop prototype
Skyforest’s March 16, 2021 Hackaday account describes a radial-flow turbojet, not a turbocharger conversion or a pulse jet. The builder used a 3D-printed compressor, reasoning that it faced less heat than the turbine. Attempts to make the turbine from ceramic resin failed; a printed jig was then used to form sheet metal into a turbine. Other internal parts were made from concrete, and the combustion chamber was welded from steel.
After multiple attempts, the engine ran. Components began melting after about ten seconds, and the article described it as far from flight-ready. Those details record what one project tried and what happened; they do not establish a safe material choice, operating method, or engine design.
Why a small turbojet is difficult to prototype
Rotating parts have to work as a system
A turbojet depends on a compressor, turbine, shaft, and bearings functioning together at high rotational speed. A part that can be fabricated in a home shop is not necessarily suitable for those conditions. Geometry, material properties, manufacturing quality, rotor balance, bearing support, lubrication, and cooling all affect whether the assembly can operate as intended.

The hot section faces a different problem from the compressor
The compressor and the turbine do not experience the same thermal environment. The prototype account itself illustrates that distinction: a printed compressor was attempted, while the turbine required another approach after the ceramic-resin experiments failed. That outcome is not a general endorsement of either material or process. A component’s suitability depends on the complete design and its operating conditions.
A successful ignition is only one kind of evidence
A brief run can show that an engine reached an operating state momentarily. It cannot, by itself, demonstrate repeatability, endurance, safe containment, controlled shutdown, or flight suitability. Skyforest’s account of melting after about ten seconds makes that difference concrete.

How the home-shop example compares with more developed projects
The examples below have different goals and levels of validation. Their figures should be read in their own contexts, not as a head-to-head performance ranking.
| Example | Architecture or components | Fabrication and test evidence | What the source establishes |

| Turbine Technologies MiniLab | Educational SR30 turbojet test cell | The company describes recording compressor inlet and exit conditions, turbine inlet and exit conditions, thrust, and fuel flow, with automatic starting, parameter monitoring, and fault shutdown. | An institutional teaching product illustrating dedicated test infrastructure; not a typical home-shop system. |
What the KJ66 reference adds—and what it does not
GTBA describes the KJ66 as a small turbojet designed by Kurt and Jesus Artes. Its undated page, accessed in 2026, gives design figures of 110 mm diameter, 240 mm length, 75 N thrust (16.77 lb), 117,000 rpm maximum speed, 570°C, and 0.93 kg mass. These figures belong to the KJ66 page’s design context; they should not be treated as expected results for another build.

GTBA describes the KJ66 as using a turbocharger compressor, with KKK 5326 2018 or 2019 options; an aluminium front section; a stainless-steel combustion chamber (UK 316 or 310 specification); a cast Inconel 713 turbine wheel; and a tool-steel shaft. It also describes C3 ISO 608 bearings and says 120,000 rpm is attainable with proper oiling and cooling. That speed statement is specific to the source’s design context, not a general operating target. GTBA says the original diffuser was CNC machined and that lathe-based fabrication is possible. Its page also states: “Unfortunately the plans for this engine are no longer available.”

University of Padova: instrumentation built into the research
The abstract of a 2007 Applied Energy paper describes a University of Padova research and teaching turbojet with a 2.66:1 compressor pressure ratio at 60,000 rpm and a turbine-inlet temperature of 950 K. It gives a 200 N static-thrust target and describes a rig that measured rotational speed, exhaust temperature, compressor discharge pressure, thrust, bearing and oil temperature, and fuel pressure and temperature. These are details of that research engine, not of the home-shop prototype or the KJ66.

Texas Tech: machining and balancing were part of the project
A Texas Tech capstone poster documents work in a university machine shop using manual and CNC machining, welding, and sheet-metal rolling. It also records specialized bearings and outside support for dynamic balancing. Its proposed test bed used a spring gauge to measure thrust and thermocouples to monitor internal temperature. Those choices describe that student project; the poster does not establish that its test-bed concept is sufficient or safe for other engines.
MiniLab: an educational test cell is a system, not just a stand
Turbine Technologies describes its MiniLab as an educational SR30 turbojet test cell. Its listed measurements include compressor inlet and exit conditions, turbine inlet and exit conditions, thrust, and fuel flow. The company also describes automatic starting, operating-parameter monitoring, and fault shutdown. This is an institutional teaching product, not a typical home-shop purchase, and its description should not be read as certifying an improvised test arrangement.

Safety, validation, and the limits of the regulatory example
These projects involve high-speed rotating parts, hot gas paths, fuel and ignition systems, and the need to measure performance and monitor operating conditions. The documented use of balancing support, instrumentation, and dedicated test facilities underscores that a test setup is part of the engineering problem. The sources do not establish a home test procedure, certify a shield or stand, or show that a particular arrangement is safe. A short demonstration run is not evidence of durability or flight readiness.
For U.S. regulatory context, the FAA’s Engine Parts Manufacturer Approvals page, last updated June 9, 2026, says: “A PMA is required for any person producing replacement or modification engine parts for sale and for installation on a type-certificated engine model.” The FAA describes a PMA as a combined design and production approval for replacement parts and cites 14 CFR part 21, section 21.303, and airworthiness requirements in part 33. This statement concerns the specified parts and use; it does not settle every rule that may apply to a privately built test article, an experimental aircraft, or activity in another jurisdiction.
