Which apple varieties have green or greenish fruit?
Skin color varies with ripeness and growing conditions, and “green apple” can mean either distinctly green fruit or fruit that starts greenish-yellow and becomes more yellow. The distinctions below matter if color is your main reason for choosing a tree.

Five varieties with green or greenish fruit
Granny Smith: distinctly green and tart
Granny Smith is the clearest choice for a reliably green-looking apple in this group. Oregon State University Extension describes it as tart and good for storage. Its guide places harvest in October in its regional context, while the university’s separate harvest guide gives late October and green skin at maturity for that context. Newtown Pippin: flavor develops in storage
Newtown Pippin ranges from green to yellow. Oregon State University Extension says its flavor improves in storage; its regional guide places maturity in October, and the harvest guide gives mid-October with yellow-green skin at maturity in its context. Think of those months as local examples, not a calendar to apply everywhere.

Rhode Island Greening: an heirloom for fresh eating and cooking
This heritage cultivar is described as a late-season apple for fresh use as well as cooking and baking. Historical descriptions record green-to-yellow color, but they do not establish modern local disease performance or climate suitability. Most importantly for an orchard plan, University of Maine Cooperative Extension lists Rhode Island Greening as triploid: its pollen is sterile for cross-pollination purposes. Mutsu (Crispin): a large, greenish-fruited apple
Mutsu is also called Crispin. North Carolina State Extension identifies it as a cross between Golden Delicious and Indo, and recommends full sun and good air movement around and through the canopy for best fruit production. Maine Extension lists Mutsu among triploid apples with sterile pollen, so pair it with two other compatible varieties. Golden Delicious: greenish-yellow, then yellow
Golden Delicious is a color-boundary choice, not a dependable green apple at ripeness: the Royal Horticultural Society describes its fruit as greenish-yellow, becoming yellow with age, and very sweet when well-ripened. The RHS lists full sun or partial shade and moist but well-drained or well-drained soil. Its profile gives a mature height and spread of 4–8 metres and 5–10 years to maturity; these are profile estimates, not promises for every rootstock or garden. Iowa State Extension notes that Golden Delicious is among the few cultivars that can set a good crop without cross-pollination. A compatible partner can still benefit most apples. Two yellow-fruited alternatives, not truly green picks
Chehalis: sweet, crisp and yellow
Oregon State University Extension describes Chehalis as a large, yellow apple that is crisp, sweet and juicy, and marks it self-compatible in its guide. Include it if you are open to pale yellow fruit; do not count it as a distinctly green cultivar.

Lodi: tart and early, but yellow
Lodi is tart and yellow, and Oregon State University Extension marks it self-compatible. The guide places its maturity in July for its region, making it an early-season option there—not a universal July harvest. Like Chehalis, it broadens the list to pale fruit rather than meeting a strict green-skin definition.

How to choose a tree that will crop in your garden
Check regional fit before ordering
Harvest timing and variety recommendations are regional. Winter chill, spring frost, disease pressure and the length of the growing season can change whether a cultivar performs well. Oregon State University’s harvest dates are useful in their regional context, not transferable planting advice. University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources ties apple recommendations to elevation bands in California, another reason to use local guidance rather than a generic national list. Match pollination partners by bloom and pollen fertility
Most apples need pollen from a different cultivar that blooms at the same time for good fruit set, according to Iowa State Extension. Sharing a yard or neighborhood with another apple does not guarantee a useful partner: bloom overlap and compatibility matter. For triploid Rhode Island Greening or Mutsu, provide two other compatible varieties because their pollen is sterile. Golden Delicious is an exception that can set a good crop without cross-pollination, but that does not make it a universal pollinator for other trees. Oregon State Extension’s self-compatibility labels for Chehalis and Lodi apply to its guide’s recommendations; check local advice for your own planting plan.

Choose for eating, baking and storage
Granny Smith offers a tart apple that stores well; Newtown Pippin’s flavor improves in storage; Rhode Island Greening is described for both fresh and culinary use. Decide which qualities matter most, then verify harvest timing locally. The sources do not support a blanket claim that any of these cultivars is low-maintenance: Iowa State Extension cautions that some commonly grown apples need frequent fungicide applications for high-quality fruit, and Oregon State notes that disease susceptibility differs among cultivars. Ask about local disease resistance before buying.
