Preventing possum damage starts with confirming the animal and identifying how it reaches the roof or plants. Use physical barriers and exclusion rather than trying to trap or relocate it yourself: wildlife rules differ by state, and relocation can put possums at risk. Check your state wildlife authority’s current requirements before any trapping, release or removal.
First, confirm what is causing the problem
Possums can be mistaken for rats or mice, so check the signs before sealing an opening or protecting plants. South Australian Department for Environment and Water guidance notes that impacts can be confused with rodent activity. It says Australia has 23 possum species, but only two commonly cause impacts; the page does not state a publication year (South Australian possum guidance).
Look for the animal at dusk, listen for movement and inspect the likely route without reaching into a roof cavity or disturbing an animal. If you cannot identify it confidently, ask your state wildlife authority or a suitably licensed local operator for advice.
How to remove a possum from your roof without trapping it inside
The safest roof strategy is to let the possum leave, then close its entry route and other openings. Sealing first can trap an animal inside; closing only one visible gap can leave another route available.

- Watch for the exit route at dusk. From a safe position, observe where the possum leaves the roof. Check that the animal is a possum, not a rat or mouse.
- Check the building for other routes. Inspect roof cavities, chimneys, drainpipes and other gaps in the building envelope. Note branches that provide access to the roof.
- Offer an alternative den. NSW Environment and Heritage recommends installing a nest box in a suitable garden tree at least 4 metres above ground. A box gives the possum an alternative place to shelter; it does not guarantee it will use the box or stay away from the roof.
- Wait until the possum has left. Do not seal the entry while the animal is inside. Follow local wildlife-authority advice if you cannot establish whether the roof space is clear.
- Close the access points and reduce repeat access. Seal the confirmed opening and other suitable entry routes. Prune branches that provide a route to the roof, while avoiding unsafe work near power lines or at height.
Victoria’s Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) describes a one-way exit flap made from hinged metal or Perspex: it lets a possum leave but prevents it returning. Metal around the flap can make it harder for claws to grip the surround. Victorian guidance also advises leaving at least 1.5 metres between the roof and access branches. A flap should not be installed without first checking that the roof is unoccupied and following the relevant local advice (Victorian brushtail possum management methods).
If you do not want to manage the roof exclusion yourself, or the approach fails, NSW advises using a currently licensed possum operator and checking the operator’s licence. Verify the applicable requirements with your own state authority: licensing and permitted procedures are not uniform across Australia (NSW guidance on removing a possum from a roof).

How to stop possums eating your garden
Choose protection to suit the area being damaged: a single tree, a row of crops or a group of favoured plants. Wildlife-safe physical barriers are the most direct options in the state guidance; fit and maintenance matter, and no barrier is a guaranteed fix.
| What you are protecting | Practical measures | Fit and safety considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Favoured plants or small beds | Wildlife-safe netting over plants; NSW also recommends non-harmful protective sprays. | Make sure netting is wildlife-safe and fitted so animals cannot become entangled. Check and maintain it. NSW’s advice is specific to garden protection, not a guarantee that every spray or net will work in every setting (NSW garden guidance). |
| Fruit trees | A tree collar, barrier or netting can restrict access; South Australia recommends these measures for fruit trees and crops. | Choose a barrier that fits the tree and does not injure wildlife. Inspect it as the tree grows and maintain it so gaps do not develop (South Australian possum guidance). |
| Individual vulnerable trees | Use a collar or physical protection; Tasmania also suggests planting less-palatable alternatives. | Match protection to the tree and the damage. Plant choice may reduce browsing appeal but is not a physical exclusion guarantee (Tasmanian guidance on living with brushtail possums). |
| A larger garden area | Victoria describes a floppy fence made from 80 cm-wide, heavily galvanised chicken wire, with the bottom 20 cm buried and the upper section curving outward. | Installation needs to suit the site and remain secure without creating a hazard to wildlife. The dimensions are from Victorian guidance and are not a universal design specification (Victorian brushtail possum management methods). |
Victoria’s DEECA advises that research found repellents and ultrasonic devices do little to deter brushtail possums. Its broader possum guidance reports that tests of 15 common repellent compounds found none effectively prevented damage to ornamental trees or fruit; this is the result reported by the department, not a universal test of every product or situation (Victorian possum guidance). Other jurisdictions mention additional approaches, but their effectiveness should not be assumed to be settled or consistent.

Check state rules before trapping, release or removal
Possums are protected wildlife, but the legal details and exceptions vary. Do not treat a rule described for one state as permission in another. Check your own regulator’s current guidance before setting a trap, handling an animal, releasing it or arranging removal.
- New South Wales: NSW Environment and Heritage says possums are protected under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and catching and releasing them is illegal without a licence. Its roof guidance specifies dusk release within 150 metres, near something the animal can climb, for licensed operators; this is NSW-specific advice, not an Australia-wide rule (NSW roof guidance).
- Victoria: DEECA describes a Governor-in-Council order permitting certain trapping of common brushtail possums living in buildings, subject to humane trap requirements and release on the same property within 50 metres. These conditions are specific to the Victorian arrangement; check the current state guidance before acting (Victorian possum guidance).
- South Australia: The Department for Environment and Water says possums are protected under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 and describes permit constraints. Consult the department for the rules that apply to your circumstances (South Australian possum guidance).
Why relocation is not a humane default
Moving a possum does not fix the access point at your home, and the animal may be harmed after release. Victorian DEECA’s summary of a 1994 Deakin University study (Pietsch) says researchers found remains of eight possums likely killed by foxes after release. Of 12 radio-collared possums released, only two were alive after 10 weeks; 68 per cent of dens used by relocated possums during the first week were on or under the ground. These figures describe that study as summarized by the Victorian government, not outcomes for every relocation.
