Choose bathroom tile by both the look you want and where it will go: a wall, general floor, shower wall, or shower floor. These 42 ideas range from familiar patterns to material effects and small-space details. Before buying, check the maker’s stated application for the exact product and intended surface; a tile suitable for a wall is not automatically suitable for a wet or traffic-exposed floor.

Classic patterns and shapes

1. White subway tile in a running bond

Lay rectangular white tiles with each row offset from the one below for a familiar, quietly varied wall. A contrasting grout makes the pattern more graphic; a close grout color keeps attention on the tile.

2. Vertically stacked subway tile

Set subway tiles in straight vertical columns to create a taller visual rhythm. This layout works well as a change from horizontal running bond on a wall or in a defined area.

3. Herringbone behind the vanity

Arrange rectangular tile in a zigzag herringbone pattern behind the sink. Keeping this detail to the vanity wall gives it presence without making every tiled surface compete for attention.

Art3d 102-Pack Peel and Stick Backsplash on Subway Tile, Glossy White
  • Easy DIY, Just Peel & stick, cut with tin snip, utility knives or hand saws, saving large amount on labor
  • 3"x6" individual subway tile, plans the layout freely to your imagination
  • Waterproof, heat resistant, stain resistant, anti-scratch, high impact, color fadeless, easy to clean, durable
  • Suitable surfaces: painted gypsum/dry wall, ceramic tile, linoleum, glass, marble/granite, metal/steel, sealed/polished/painted wood
  • Unsuitable surfaces: brick wall, oily glossy painted wall, textured wall and any uneven rough surfaces

4. Square tile in a clean grid

Square ceramic tile set in aligned rows and columns offers a calm, orderly alternative to offset layouts. The grout color determines whether the grid reads clearly or recedes.

5. Two-neutral checkerboard floor

Use two soft, related neutrals for a checkerboard that brings pattern to the floor without a sharp black-and-white contrast. Confirm that the selected product is intended for flooring and the conditions where it will be installed.

6. Hexagon mosaic accent

A restrained hexagon mosaic can add shape and detail to a floor or a smaller feature. Check the product’s stated suitability for the intended surface rather than assuming every mosaic is floor-ready.

7. Penny-round mosaic detail

Small round tiles bring a vintage-inspired texture to a contained area, such as a niche back or a floor accent. Their numerous grout joints make grout color especially visible in the finished design.

8. Basketweave mosaic feature

Basketweave mosaics offer a traditional woven effect for a focal area. Use them where the pattern can be appreciated, and verify the tile’s application before specifying it for a floor or shower floor.

9. Contrasting floor border

Frame a tiled floor with a border in a contrasting color or pattern. This defines the floor’s perimeter and can make a simple field tile feel more tailored.

10. Mosaic tile “rug”

Create a decorative mosaic panel in front of a vanity or bath, surrounded by simpler field tile. Treat the motif as a visual focal point and plan its position in relation to fixtures and floor boundaries.

Color and contrast

11. Deep green feature wall

Use deep green tile on one wall to give the room a strong focal color. Pair it with quieter surfaces so the feature remains distinct rather than competing with several other patterns.

12. Soft blue around a bathtub

Soft blue tile can define the bath area with a relaxed wash of color. A consistent tile family or grout tone helps the color read as a continuous surround.

13. Blush or terracotta warmth

Blush and terracotta shades bring warmth to a bathroom without relying on a bright primary color. A limited application—such as a backsplash or one wall—can make the hue feel intentional.

14. Jewel tones with neutral surfaces

Saturated jewel-tone tile brings drama to a feature area. Balance its intensity with neutral walls, floors, or fixtures so the color has room to stand out.

15. Two-color zoning

Use one tile color to distinguish the shower area from the vanity zone. A clear change in color can make the room’s functional areas easier to read without adding another shape or pattern.

16. Dark tile with pale grout

Pale grout outlines dark tiles and emphasizes their shape and layout. Choose this high-contrast combination when the grid is part of the intended design.

17. Tone-on-tone grout

Match grout closely to the tile color for a quieter, more continuous appearance. This shifts attention from individual joints to the overall surface.

18. Patterned tile in a limited area

Colorful patterned tile can enliven a niche, backsplash, or feature panel. Restricting it to one area lets a bold pattern work alongside simpler surrounding tile.

Material looks and texture

19. Marble-look porcelain

Marble-look porcelain offers a stone-inspired appearance in a manufactured tile. Compare the product’s finish and stated application with the surface you plan to tile; the look alone does not establish whether it suits a floor or wet area.

20. Natural marble as a feature

Natural marble makes a distinctive focal surface. Consider the particular product’s care requirements and intended use before choosing it, since the material name alone does not establish suitability for every bathroom surface.

21. Wood-look porcelain planks

Long, wood-look porcelain planks bring a warm visual note in a tile format. Their elongated shape can echo wood flooring while keeping the scheme within a tile palette.

22. Concrete-look porcelain

Concrete-look porcelain supports a restrained contemporary scheme. Use it as a broad, quiet backdrop or contrast it with a more colorful or textured feature tile.

23. Zellige-style glaze variation

Zellige-style tiles have irregular glaze variation that gives a wall a lively, handmade-inspired surface. A simple layout lets the variation provide the visual interest.

24. Three-dimensional ceramic wall tile

Relief in three-dimensional ceramic tile adds depth and catches light on a wall. Its raised profile makes it a natural candidate for a feature rather than a surface where a flatter finish is preferred.

25. Textured stone-look tile

A textured stone-look tile adds tactile character to a feature area. If considering it for a floor, check the exact product’s stated use and care requirements rather than inferring performance from its appearance.

26. Glass tile accent

Glass tile reflects light and can brighten a small decorative area. Use it as an accent and confirm the maker’s application guidance for the specific installation location.

27. Mix ceramic and porcelain

Combine ceramic and porcelain tiles to contrast finish, shape, or color—for example, a decorative ceramic wall detail against a simpler porcelain field. Select each product for its actual surface and exposure.

28. Natural stone mosaic focal point

Natural stone mosaics create an organic focal point through their small pieces and varied appearance. Confirm the specific stone product’s intended use and maintenance needs before specifying it.

Small rooms, details, and zones

29. Large-format wall tile

Large-format tile creates a broad visual plane with fewer visible divisions than small-format tile. It can make a wall feel uncluttered; the choice still depends on the particular product and the intended surface.

30. Mosaic around a curved niche

Small-format mosaic can follow a curve or wrap around a niche more readily than large pieces. Porcelanosa’s mosaic guide explains that small dimensions help accommodate curves and fittings; specialist mosaic work may warrant professional installation. Porcelanosa mosaic guide

31. Contrasting niche back

Give a shower niche a contrasting tile back while keeping the surrounding wall simpler. The change in color or pattern marks the recess as a deliberate detail.

32. Vivid vanity backsplash

A vivid tile backsplash behind the vanity introduces color in a compact, easy-to-see area. A simpler wall or floor nearby keeps the feature from overwhelming the room.

33. Vertical feature strip

A narrow vertical strip of contrasting tile draws the eye upward and adds a clear line to a wall. Align it with a fixture or architectural feature so it looks placed rather than incidental.

34. Half-height wainscot

Tile the lower portion of a wall and use painted wall above for a traditional wainscot effect. A neat top edge gives the transition a finished appearance.

35. Same-family tile on walls and floor

Use related tile colors or patterns on walls and floor for visual continuity. The products must still be individually suitable for their respective surfaces; a shared look does not make their applications interchangeable.

36. Feature wall behind a freestanding bath

Make the wall behind a freestanding bath the room’s focal surface with color, texture, or a distinct layout. Keeping nearby surfaces restrained helps the feature read clearly.

Shower and floor features

37. Small mosaic on a shower floor

Small-format mosaic can bring a distinct pattern to the shower floor. Choose only a product expressly intended for that use; tile size or grout coverage alone does not establish suitability.

38. Mosaic sheets for a sloped shower floor

Mosaic sheets can accommodate the geometry of a sloped shower floor and its drain. Porcelanosa’s guide also warns that transitions between mesh-backed sheets can be uneven, so careful alignment matters. See the mosaic installation guidance

39. Mark the shower zone with color or texture

Distinguish the shower from the rest of the bathroom with a change in tile color or texture. Keep the transition deliberate and verify that the selected tile is appropriate for its location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

40. Echo a simpler wall tile in the floor pattern

Choose a floor pattern that picks up a color, shape, or tone from a plainer wall tile. This connects the surfaces without requiring the same pattern everywhere.

41. Matte or textured floor with a smoother wall

Pair a matte or textured floor tile with a smoother wall tile to create a tactile contrast. Check product information for the exact floor application rather than treating finish descriptions as proof of suitability.

42. Carefully aligned mosaic panel

Use a decorative mosaic panel as a focal point, with careful attention to sheet alignment so joints and pattern transitions remain consistent. Porcelanosa recommends professional installation for specialist mosaic work and cautions about uneven junctions between sheets. Read Porcelanosa’s mosaic guide

How to choose tile for the actual surface

Before settling on a look, compare the tile’s intended location and exposure, material, size and shape, finish or texture, maintenance needs, grout appearance, and the manufacturer’s stated use. Porcelain, ceramic, and natural stone each offer different looks and practical considerations, but material alone does not prove that a product is suitable for every wet or high-traffic surface. Tile Mountain’s bathroom tile guide and Porcelanosa’s mosaic guide discuss tile types and design possibilities.

  • For walls: Consider color, layout, surface texture, and whether a large-format tile or decorative detail best suits the room.
  • For general floors: Verify the exact product’s floor application and consider how its finish, pattern, and grout will look underfoot.
  • For shower floors: Confirm the product is intended for that application and check local requirements and the precise product data. The design ideas here do not establish a universal code-compliant floor or shower specification.
  • For mosaics: Small pieces can help follow curves, fittings, and drainage geometry, while grout joints and surface texture contribute to the overall feel. Those characteristics do not replace checking the product’s use rating.

For ceramic installation, a manufacturer document calls for skilled personnel with suitable tools and directs installers to follow the recommendations of the product and grout makers. Marazzi ceramic installation instructions
