In the solar, they uncovered 19th-century bedroom details and oak features, then paired them with contemporary furniture and accents. The result reflects their stated aim: varied styles with a sense of cohesion.
Designing around the château’s layers
The château near Paris is described by AOL and HGTV as about 500 years old. Its buildings also bear the traces of renovations from different periods. Reckert told AOL, “The chateau and all the buildings have been built over the last few centuries.” The couple and their friend Allison, who served as interior designer, drew on those existing architectural details and earlier alterations rather than treating the interiors as a blank slate.
That approach meant allowing rooms to differ while giving them an overall relationship. Reckert explained: “And so we’ve been able to renovate things with very different styles, but we try to keep a cohesiveness throughout the design.” It was a project-specific design choice, not a claim that one method suits every historic property.
The solar: revealed architecture, contemporary accents
The clearest example is the solar, which AOL describes as a private family room in the castle. Decay and rot prompted renovation work that uncovered an 1800s bedroom arrangement hidden behind cobwebs, creaky floorboards and newer sheetrock. Opening the space revealed oak architectural details that could become a visible part of the finished room.

Rather than furnishing the solar entirely with period pieces, the couple combined the older fabric with modern accents. AOL notes oversized gold mirrors, curvy chairs, pendant lights and an iron railing. The contrast lets the historic features remain legible while giving the room a comfortable, usable character.
Making the rooms feel lived-in without losing control of the budget
Reckert said the couple wanted rooms to feel cozy and lived-in. Vintage-market shopping helped them furnish the property within their means and left room to negotiate. They also set a spending limit for each item and passed on pieces that exceeded it—even when a particular find seemed ideal.

- Set a ceiling per piece. A budget attached to each item made it easier to decide whether a tempting find belonged in the plan.
- Leave room to negotiate. The couple saw secondhand shopping as a way to manage costs as well as find characterful furnishings.
- Choose for the room, not just the listing. In the solar, contemporary chairs and mirrors were selected to sit alongside exposed oak and older architectural features.
The interview does not identify a particular market, seller, chair model or mirror brand, so these details are best read as inspiration rather than a product list.
A renovation tied to how the property is used
HGTV’s 2026 Season 2 guide describes further planned work on a honeymoon suite, tea salon, dungeon tavern, library and gatehouse. It connects those renovations to Reckert and Figueira’s effort to expand their wedding and event business. The guide describes the château as a 130-acre estate and says the season has eight new episodes.

That later context broadens the design challenge: rooms must retain a relationship to the property’s past while serving the owners’ evolving plans for its future. Figueira captured the scale of the work in his interview with AOL: “It takes a village—especially a castle in France.”
