Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) Review: Is It Worth $279.99?

The Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen is excellent for Google households and complex supported HVAC, but its $279.99 price makes it a selective upgrade rather than a universal recommendation.

Verdict: The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is a strong choice for Google Home households, new HVAC installations, and homes that need remote temperature sensing or broader equipment support. At its $279.99 U.S. list price, it is not an automatic upgrade for a functioning 3rd-generation Nest. Its practical advantages are the included sensor, expanded HVAC compatibility, Matter support, and newer energy features—not the larger screen alone.

Google announced the 4th-generation model on August 20, 2024, and it went on sale then; it is not an upcoming device. (Google launch announcement)

Quick verdict

  • U.S. list price: $279.99.
  • Best for: Google-centered homes, supported multi-stage or accessory-equipped HVAC, and rooms with persistent hot or cold spots.
  • Main weakness: Premium pricing and dependence on the Google Home experience.
  • Best alternative: Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium for occupancy-aware sensors; Ecobee Essential or Honeywell Home X8S for lower-cost or more conventional interfaces.

The 4th gen makes the most sense when replacing a basic thermostat or installing a new system. A 3rd-gen owner who is already comfortable and has no compatibility or sensor need should usually keep the existing thermostat.

What is genuinely new?

A much larger display

Google says the 2.7-inch, 600 × 600 circular LCD is 60% larger than the previous generation. The rotating metal ring, customizable home screen, and Dynamic Farsight make information easier to read across a room. That is a useful design improvement, but it does not by itself justify a $280 upgrade.

One remote sensor is included

The box includes one second-generation Nest Temperature Sensor. You can add up to six more sensors per thermostat, and all Nest Temperature Sensor generations work with the 4th gen. A selected sensor can represent a bedroom, nursery, office, or another room that differs from the thermostat location. Google describes these sensors primarily as temperature devices, not occupancy sensors.

Broader equipment support

The redesigned backplate supports more configurations, including certain humidifier, dehumidifier, and ventilation systems. Software version 2.4, released April 30, 2026, added on-device setup, advanced settings, equipment reconfiguration, and expanded multi-stage heat-pump support. (Google software updates)

Matter and newer automation

The thermostat is Matter-certified, so compatible platforms can provide basic control beyond Google Home. It also adds Smart Schedule, Adaptive Eco, Seasonal Savings, natural heating and cooling, and smart ventilation. Matter does not guarantee that every Google-specific schedule, diagnostic, or learning feature appears identically in Apple Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or another controller.

Does the Nest really learn?

It can build a schedule from temperatures you select and the times you use them, then suggest energy-saving changes in Google Home. Learning is not fully autonomous climate control. Results depend on whether you permit automatic schedule changes, how predictable your routine is, where the thermostat and sensors are located, how quickly your HVAC responds, and whether you accept suggestions.

Smart Schedule, Adaptive Eco, and Seasonal Savings are optimization tools, not guaranteed bill reductions. Climate, insulation, equipment efficiency, utility rates, occupancy, and temperature preferences determine actual savings. Homes with infants, medical requirements, pets, humidity limits, or strict comfort targets may prefer fixed schedules and manual approval of changes. (Google schedule guidance)

How useful is the included sensor?

The sensor is most valuable in a multi-story home or a house where the thermostat sits in a hallway while a bedroom or office runs too hot or cold. You can prioritize a room for different periods of the schedule, then observe whether the system responds quickly enough for that space.

  • It measures temperature; it is not an Ecobee-style occupancy sensor.
  • It can improve comfort in a problem room, but it cannot make every room the same temperature at once.
  • Additional sensors cost extra; Google community pricing cited in 2026 was $39.99 for one or $99.99 for three, so verify current pricing before buying. (Google Nest community announcement)

WIRED found the bundled sensor useful for monitoring a child’s bedroom, while TechHive and Tom’s Guide note that Ecobee sensors add presence detection. (WIRED; TechHive)

HVAC compatibility: check before you buy

The 4th gen is designed for most 24-volt systems, including gas, oil, and electric forced-air equipment, heat pumps, and radiant systems. Google lists support for up to three stages of conventional heating, two stages of conventional cooling, heat-pump systems with up to two stages of heat-pump heating and two stages of alternate heating, and up to two stages of heat-pump cooling. Supported humidifier, dehumidifier, and ventilation connections use the AQ+ configuration. (Google compatibility documentation)

Do not diagnose compatibility from wire colors alone. Use Google’s compatibility checker for multiple R wires, multiple transformers, zone-control boards, dry-contact boilers, steam or forced-hot-water systems, commercial equipment, unusual international systems, or systems with more stages than specified.

C-wire reality

Google says fewer than 1% of systems may need a C wire or Nest Power Connector. “Works without a C wire” therefore means most, not all, installations. Low-battery warnings, random restarts, unreliable starts, or cycling indicate a power problem that needs investigation. Turn off HVAC power before handling wiring, and use a professional for uncertain wiring, boilers, zone boards, high-voltage equipment, or accessory controls.

Setup and everyday ownership

The redesigned backplate and software 2.4 make setup more flexible, including local equipment reconfiguration. Most features still require Google Home.

  1. Photograph the existing terminals before disconnecting anything.
  2. Switch off HVAC power at the breaker or service switch.
  3. Run Google’s compatibility checker and label wires by terminal position, not color.
  4. Install the Nest base and connect only supported terminals.
  5. Restore power and complete setup in Google Home.
  6. Pair the included sensor during setup or afterward.
  7. Run the thermostat’s system test, checking heating, cooling, fan, heat-pump, auxiliary heat, and accessories as applicable.

After installation, common tasks include changing the current temperature, editing schedules, overriding a schedule, selecting a sensor, enabling Eco, viewing energy history, testing equipment, and reconfiguring HVAC. Lost Wi-Fi does not remove basic thermostat operation, but remote control, connected alerts, and many smart features depend on Google’s app and cloud services. (Google setup guide)

  • The Nest Learning Thermostat works with the Nest Temperature Sensor (sold separately) to help make sure a certain room is the exact temperature you want it to be

Google Home, Matter, and presence detection

Google Home is the primary interface rather than the legacy Nest app. It brings thermostat controls, schedules, diagnostics, and other Google devices together, but some advanced options can be easier to find on the thermostat itself. Matter broadens platform choice for compatible basic controls; it does not eliminate Google ecosystem dependence for the full Nest experience.

Home/Away behavior can also be imperfect. Consumer Reports reported that presence readings from phones and other devices did not always reach the thermostat as expected. Treat automatic presence detection as a convenience, not a safety-critical guarantee; use explicit schedules when temperature requirements are strict. (Consumer Reports)

Should a 3rd-generation owner upgrade?

Upgrade when

  • You need the included sensor or additional room-temperature control.
  • Your new or existing HVAC system needs accessory support, newer multi-stage heat-pump support, or broader configuration options.
  • Matter control, on-device setup, or the larger display matters to you.
  • Your current thermostat is unreliable or you are already replacing equipment.

Keep the 3rd gen when

  • It controls the HVAC reliably and comfort is satisfactory.
  • You do not need sensors, accessories, Matter, or newer automation.
  • You are seeking guaranteed energy savings; the 4th gen cannot promise them.

The 4th gen is a meaningful capability upgrade, not a proportional guarantee of better comfort or lower bills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen require a C wire?

No in most installations, according to Google, but fewer than 1% of systems may require a C wire or Nest Power Connector. Check compatibility before purchase and investigate low-power warnings or restarts.

Is the included Nest Temperature Sensor an occupancy sensor?

It is primarily a temperature sensor. Ecobee’s remote sensors add occupancy or presence detection, so the two systems are not equivalent.

The Bottom Line

At $279.99, buy the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) for its included sensor, expanded HVAC support, Matter compatibility, and Google Home integration. Do not buy it solely for the larger display or assumed energy savings, and do not replace a satisfactory 3rd-generation Nest without a specific capability or comfort reason.
