If you want to reduce contact with kitchen plastics, stainless-steel and wooden cooking utensils are practical alternatives to consider. That is a precautionary choice, not proof that ordinary plastic utensils cause harm: the FDA says current evidence does not demonstrate that microplastic and nanoplastic levels detected in food pose a human-health risk. Choose utensils by their construction, cooking task, heat limits, care instructions, and compatibility with your cookware—not by broad “non-toxic” promises.
What does the evidence say about plastics and health?
The evidence supports a measured answer, not a blanket warning about every plastic product. The FDA reports that some evidence indicates microplastics and nanoplastics enter the food supply, primarily through environmental contamination. It says, “Current scientific evidence does not demonstrate that levels of microplastics or nanoplastics detected in foods pose a risk to human health.” The agency also says there is insufficient evidence to show that these particles migrate from plastic food packaging into food and drinks. Measurement remains challenging because standardized definitions and validated methods are lacking, and study methods vary in accuracy and specificity. FDA: Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Foods.
The National Institutes of Health offers a precautionary option for people who choose to reduce exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals: avoid kitchen plastics, including utensils, where possible. NIH also suggests glass, porcelain, or stainless-steel containers, particularly for hot food or liquids, and advises against microwaving plastic food containers. This is general exposure-reduction advice; NIH does not establish that every plastic utensil is dangerous or that switching utensils prevents disease. NIH: Endocrine Disruptors.
Which utensil materials are worth considering?
Stainless steel
Stainless-steel cooking utensils can reduce reliance on plastic in tasks such as stirring, turning, or serving. NIH specifically names stainless steel as an option for containers, not as an endorsed utensil material, so consider a stainless utensil on its product-specific merits. Check whether it is appropriate for your pan: metal can scratch some nonstick or delicate finishes. Confirm the manufacturer’s cookware-compatibility and care instructions before buying.

Wood
Wooden utensils offer another physical alternative for stirring, turning, and serving. Construction and upkeep vary by product, so check the listed material, any coatings or joined components, and the maker’s washing and drying instructions. Do not assume all wooden utensils are made or maintained in the same way.
Plastic and resin items
Food-contact safety depends on the substance, product, intended use, migration, and toxicology. U.S. law requires food-contact materials to be authorized for their intended use, and the FDA evaluates migration under intended conditions alongside toxicological data. That does not mean all materials behave alike or that a general material label guarantees a particular product’s performance. FDA: food-contact materials and microplastics.

Melamine illustrates why intended use matters. The FDA says melamine-based tableware may be used to serve food, but foods and drinks should not be heated on it in a microwave. Its page describes a test in which three of 19 commercially available plates and cups released small amounts of melamine into acidic food under exaggerated conditions—160°F for two hours. That result is not a health-outcome rate and should not be generalized to all utensils or all plastic products. FDA: Melamine in Tableware Questions and Answers.
How to choose a utensil for your kitchen
- Identify the task. Decide whether you need a tool for stirring, flipping, scraping, or serving; shape and stiffness matter as much as material.
- Check the complete construction. Read the listing for the food-contact material, coatings, glued joints, and other components. Prefer specific construction details over vague claims such as “chemical-free” or “toxin-free.”
- Match it to your cookware. Follow the utensil maker’s instructions and your cookware maker’s guidance, especially for nonstick or delicate surfaces.
- Verify heat and cleaning limits. Check the stated heat tolerance, dishwasher suitability, and any maintenance requirements for the exact item.
- Compare durability and price on current listings. Look for product-specific care details or warranty terms, and confirm the current price before purchase. No particular product or current “from $7” price is established here.
What about PFAS and nonstick cookware?
PFAS claims need to be tied to a specific use. The FDA says migration depends on the authorized and intended use, molecular structure, and manufacturing. Its current data identify grease-proofing agents used in paper and paperboard as the food-contact use that raised potential dietary-safety concerns. Those substances were no longer being sold in the United States by February 2024; in January 2025, the FDA determined that 35 related food-contact notifications were no longer effective after abandonment of those uses. By contrast, the FDA describes negligible amounts of migratable PFAS from the specified nonstick cookware-coating process. Neither finding supports a blanket claim about every PFAS use or every nonstick pan. FDA: Authorized Uses of PFAS in Food Contact Applications.
