No—the kitchen island is not broadly disappearing. In Houzz’s 2026 U.S. Kitchen Trends Study, 58% of homeowners renovating a kitchen said they added or updated an island. At the same time, 36% of renovated kitchens had no island. The numbers describe renovation projects, not every kitchen in the country, but they show the real shift: an island is still popular, not obligatory.
What the latest figures say about kitchen islands
Houzz’s 2026 U.S. Kitchen Trends Study surveyed people completing, undertaking, or planning renovations during 2025–26. Among those renovating homeowners, 29% added a new island and another 29% upgraded an existing one. Six percent left an existing island unchanged; 36% of renovated kitchens did not have one. These figures describe renovation outcomes, not the share of all U.S. kitchens with an island. Houzz’s study details.
The island also remains a work surface, not just a place to gather: 53% of surveyed renovators installed at least one appliance in an island. Dishwashers (35%) and microwaves (32%) were common choices in the survey, which included 1,780 Houzz users and was fielded in July 2025. That does not mean every island needs an appliance; it does show that many homeowners continue to build practical functions into theirs. Houzz’s study details.
A separate industry signal should be read more cautiously. In its 2026 Kitchen Trends Report, released September 18, 2025, NKBA | KBIS found that 76% of surveyed respondents expected the U.S. kitchen footprint to increase over the following three years. The survey covered 634 NKBA community members in targeted kitchen and bath occupations; it is an industry outlook, not a homeowner poll about island adoption. NKBA | KBIS’s report.

Why an island may be the wrong fit
A fixed island takes floor area and affects how people move between the kitchen’s work zones. Bilal Rehman, CEO and principal designer of Bilal Rehman Studio, puts the concern plainly: “In many homes, islands can disrupt flow and take up valuable space.” Bilal Rehman Studio.
The issue is not whether islands are stylish; it is whether one improves this particular room. If an island narrows the routes people use, crowds an existing dining area, or duplicates ample perimeter counter space, the center may work better left open. A dining table and well-equipped perimeter counters, for example, can already provide places to prepare food and sit down. Apartment Therapy’s small-kitchen example illustrates that approach, but it is not survey evidence.

Compare the alternatives by what your kitchen needs
Skipping a built-in island does not mean giving up every function associated with one. The alternatives differ in how much they affect circulation, how they add work surface or storage, whether they offer seating, and whether they can move.
| Option | What it can add | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Peninsula | Attached prep area, storage, and seating | Fixed to the cabinetry, but avoids a freestanding block in the middle. Rehman describes it as an option that can improve circulation in smaller kitchens. Bilal Rehman Studio |
| Freestanding cook’s table | Prep surface and a furniture-like place to gather | Smaller movable tables can feel less imposing, but provide less built-in storage than cabinetry. House Beautiful quotes designer Amy Sklar saying, “A traditional island can dominate a kitchen,” and designer Cynthia Lananh: “I love a kitchen island that looks like a piece of furniture.” These are design opinions, not measured market findings. House Beautiful’s design coverage |
| Wall shelving | Storage and, depending on the setup, some additional surface | Does not provide the central work area or seating of an island. Apartment Therapy describes IKEA KUNGSFORS shelves used in one small galley kitchen where an island would not fit. Apartment Therapy’s example |
| Open center | Clear floor space and circulation | Adds no island-like prep surface, storage, or seating; it makes sense when perimeter counters, pantry storage, and a separate table meet the household’s needs. Apartment Therapy’s example |
How to decide whether an island belongs in your plan
- Map the paths through the room. Consider how people move between the cooking, sink, refrigerator, dining area, and entrances. Note where doors, drawers, and appliances open before committing floor space to a central fixture.
- List the jobs the island must do. Separate must-haves—such as prep space or storage—from nice-to-haves such as casual seating. Then check whether the perimeter already handles any of those jobs well.
- Compare fixed and movable solutions. A peninsula connects to the cabinetry; a cook’s table can be moved; shelves use wall space; leaving the center open preserves floor area. Choose based on which functions you need and which compromises the room can accommodate.
- Test the layout before finalizing construction. Mark a proposed footprint on the floor and consider everyday movement, seating, and access to storage. For a cook’s table, Becky Ducsik, a designer at The Phinery, recommends four to five feet of clearance for comfortable flow in House Beautiful’s coverage. Treat that as her design recommendation, not a universal building-code rule. House Beautiful’s design coverage
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The Houzz survey supports the conclusion that islands remain common among homeowners renovating kitchens, while no-island renovations are also a substantial outcome. It does not establish the prevalence of islands in all existing U.S. kitchens or prove that adoption is rising or falling across every home. NKBA | KBIS’s footprint outlook offers industry context but does not measure island choices. The design articles provide examples and professional opinions, not representative trend counts.
