Yes—ordinary rain does not automatically make outdoor Christmas lights unsafe when every component is rated for outdoor wet use, the connection is protected by a weatherproof in-use enclosure, and the circuit has GFCI protection. Keep plugs and junctions above puddles, inspect the equipment first, and switch the display off when you are asleep or away. Severe storms, pooling water, or damaged equipment are reasons to shut it down.
What determines whether rain is safe?
Rain is only one part of the risk. Safety depends on the light string’s location rating, the extension cord, the receptacle, the plug connection, the condition of the equipment, and whether anyone is monitoring it.
Outdoor-rated equipment
Use light strings and extension cords explicitly labeled for outdoor or wet-location use. Indoor-only lights are not suitable outside, even if they appear sealed. Check the voltage and every manufacturer instruction before connecting anything.
Weatherproof connection
An outdoor receptacle needs a weatherproof “in-use” cover that remains weatherproof with the plug inserted. OSHA regulation 1910.305(j)(2)(vi) specifically lists holiday lights as an unattended product in a wet location and requires a weatherproof enclosure with the attachment plug cap inserted or removed. Keep the receptacle and cover above ground whenever possible.

GFCI protection
Plug outdoor decorations into a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)-protected outlet. A GFCI cuts power when it detects current taking an unintended path, reducing shock risk; it does not make damaged equipment safe. Government of Quebec guidance, last updated October 10, 2025, advises plugging any item used outdoors into a GFCI outlet.
How to set up lights for wet weather
- Read the labels. Confirm that every light string and extension cord is rated for outdoor use and has the correct voltage.
- Look for independent certification. Recognized safety certification is preferable. UL Standards & Engagement says holiday lights certified to UL 588 are subjected to rain, water-immersion, ultraviolet-exposure and other tests for safe wet-weather operation.
- Inspect before installation. Reject strings or cords with frayed insulation, cracked sockets, broken bulbs, loose plugs, exposed conductors, or improvised repairs.
- Install the GFCI connection. Use a functioning GFCI-protected outdoor receptacle, then test it according to the device’s instructions.
- Close the in-use cover. Insert the plug fully and verify that the cover still seals around it. Do not leave a plug or receptacle exposed to direct runoff.
- Elevate junctions. Keep connectors and extension-cord junctions off the ground and away from snow, puddles, irrigation spray, roof runoff and downspouts. Arrange cords so water drains away rather than collecting at a connection.
- Stay within loading limits. Follow the light maker’s limit for connected strings and the extension-cord rating. CPSC holiday guidance says to use no more than three standard-size sets on one extension cord.
Can the lights stay on overnight?
Leaving a compliant installation energized while you are present during normal rain can be reasonable. Leaving it on while asleep or away adds an avoidable unattended risk. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises turning off lights on trees and other decorations when you go to bed or leave the house. A listed timer can enforce that shutoff routine.

When to shut down immediately
- Water is pooling around a receptacle, plug, connector or power supply.
- Wind, flooding, snow or a severe storm could move, bury or damage the equipment.
- The GFCI trips repeatedly or will not reset after the area is dry and the equipment is checked.
- You see arcing, heat damage, a burning smell, exposed wire or a cracked enclosure.
During dangerous weather, turn the display off from a dry, safe position. Do not wade through water or handle a wet plug to disconnect it; use the circuit’s safe disconnect point and have an electrician investigate persistent faults.

“Outdoor” generally means designed and tested for exposure to weather; it does not mean every part can be submerged indefinitely. Certification, product instructions and the protection around each connection matter. UL 588 certification is evidence that a holiday-light product has undergone specified environmental tests, but the installation still needs protected receptacles and sound cords.

What to do if a GFCI trips
- Switch off or unplug the decoration only from a dry, safe location.
- Allow the receptacle, cover and connections to dry; never open or handle them while standing in water.
- Inspect every cord, socket, plug and power supply for damage or displaced covers.
- Reconnect only after the cause is corrected. If the GFCI trips again, leave the circuit off and arrange qualified electrical troubleshooting.
A quick pre-rain checklist
- Lights and extension cords are labeled for outdoor use and match the required voltage.
- Products have recognized independent safety certification where available.
- The circuit is GFCI-protected.
- The receptacle uses a weatherproof in-use cover with the plug inserted.
- Wires, sockets, bulbs, plugs and connectors are intact.
- Connections are elevated and protected from puddles, snow and runoff.
- Connected sets and extension-cord load stay within manufacturer limits, including the CPSC limit of three standard-size sets per single extension cord.
- A timer or household routine turns the lights off before sleep or departure.
