It works only where the spray touches, so it will not correct shade, persistent moisture, poor drainage or compacted soil that lets moss return. Household vinegar is usually about 5% acetic acid; products sold for herbicidal use are commonly around 15–20%, with some labeled products at 25%. Use only a product whose label permits moss control on your specific surface.
Will vinegar kill moss on a patio or paving?
It can provide good control on exposed moss growing on hard surfaces such as block paving, but results depend on the formulation, coverage and surface. Acetic acid dries and damages contacted tissue; it does not move through the plant to protected roots. Dead moss still needs to be brushed away, and new moss can grow if the site remains damp and shaded.
Mechanical removal is the lowest-risk starting point. Scrape or brush loose growth from paving, steps or a deck, then consider a labeled acetic-acid product only for residue that remains.
Choose the concentration and product carefully
| Product or use | Acetic acid concentration | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Household food vinegar | About 5% | Common kitchen vinegar; not automatically labeled or tested as a moss herbicide. |
| Herbicidal-use guidance | Approximately 15–20% | Range described by extension guidance for horticultural vinegar products. |
| Horticultural vinegar described by University of Maine Extension | 20% | Four times the acetic-acid concentration of typical household vinegar and capable of serious injury. |
| Nature’s Glory product example listed by Cornell Cooperative Extension | 25% | A named product example; availability, registration and permitted uses vary by location. |
Do not assume that stronger is always better or that food vinegar and a registered herbicide are interchangeable. Read the current label for the target moss, permitted surface, dilution, weather limits, protective equipment and re-entry instructions.

How to treat moss on hard surfaces
- Identify the surface and hazards. Check whether the label permits use on paving, masonry, concrete, gravel, decking or other material. Keep spray off plants, reactive metals and surfaces excluded by the label. Treat roof moss only if the product label specifically allows that site and you can work safely; runoff, fragile roofing and fall hazards make roof treatment unsuitable for many do-it-yourself applications.
- Remove loose growth. Use a stiff brush or scraper on paving, steps and decks. For a lawn, hand-raking is the temporary removal method recommended by extension guidance.
- Select a labeled product. Choose an acetic-acid product whose label includes moss or the intended hard-surface site. Do not add ingredients or copy an online recipe.
- Apply to exposed, actively growing moss. Use the label rate in calm, dry conditions. Acetic acid is a contact treatment, so incomplete coverage leaves living tissue untreated and drift can injure desirable plants.
- Protect people, pets and yourself. Wear chemical-resistant gloves and splash-resistant eye protection. Keep people and animals away until the treated area is dry and follow all label precautions. Concentrated acetic acid can burn skin and cause permanent eye damage.
- Inspect and clean up. Recheck at the interval stated on the label, then brush away dead material. If growth returns, correct the site conditions instead of repeatedly increasing vinegar strength.
Should you use vinegar on a lawn?
Do not spray an entire lawn simply because moss is visible. Moss does not harm or kill grass; it occupies areas where turf is weak. Vinegar is non-selective and can injure grass, ornamentals and other plants it contacts.
Fix the conditions that favor moss
- Increase light where practical by pruning or choosing a more shade-tolerant grass.
- Improve drainage and reduce persistent surface moisture.
- Relieve compaction and improve soil structure.
- Correct low fertility according to a soil test and appropriate lawn guidance.
- Rake out existing moss as a temporary measure while the underlying problem is addressed.
A lawn treatment that only scorches visible moss leaves the cause untouched, so regrowth is likely.

How vinegar compares with other moss-control approaches
| Approach | Best fit | Regrowth and selectivity | Main cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brushing, scraping or hand-raking | Paving, steps, decks and small lawn patches | Removes visible growth but does not correct shade, moisture or soil problems; highly targeted. | Labor-intensive; can disturb jointing material or turf if done aggressively. |
| Labeled acetic-acid product | Exposed moss on a permitted hard surface | Fast contact injury where sprayed; no systemic root control and no site correction. | Non-selective; drift and runoff injure plants; concentrated products require protective equipment. |
| Site correction | Moss-prone lawns and repeatedly damp areas | Addresses the conditions driving recurrence; selective when changes are targeted. | May require pruning, drainage work, aeration, soil improvement or reseeding. |
Why vinegar-plus-salt or dish soap recipes are a bad shortcut
Household recipes that combine vinegar with salt or dish soap are not verified universal pesticides. Salt can accumulate and harm soil and desirable plants, while unapproved mixtures may change how a product behaves, increase spray injury or violate the label. Use a registered, labeled product as directed, or choose brushing and site correction instead.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming 5% kitchen vinegar will perform like a 20% horticultural product.
- Spraying in wind and allowing drift or runoff onto plants, soil, ponds or metalwork.
- Using a product on a roof, deck or paving material that its label excludes.
- Applying repeatedly without removing dead moss or correcting shade and drainage.
- Skipping eye protection because the product is described as “natural.”
