Three holes in each stick and pivoting fasteners create a scissor-like linkage: bringing the sticks together extends the arm, while spreading them apart retracts it. Soft sponge pieces at the tip form a gripper for light objects. For the illustrated layout, use the updated Howtoons instructions on Make.
How the wooden arm works
The arm is made from overlapping sticks joined at pivot points. As the linked sticks change angle, the assembly lengthens or folds back, much like a scissor linkage. You operate it by hand rather than with a motor: pull the sticks together to extend the arm, then push them apart to bring it back.
The soft sponge pieces at the far end act as jaws. They are intended to grip light objects; the project page does not provide a rated load or maximum reach.
Materials and quantities
- Paint stirring sticks: the project lists 12 and permits fewer or more, as long as you use an even number.
- Machine screws, washers and hex nuts: Make lists 16 of each, noting that the quantity depends on how many sticks you use.
- Grout sponge: cut into soft pieces for the gripper.
- Glue: optional.
The written materials list does not specify screw dimensions. Check the updated comic for the visual arrangement and hole layout rather than guessing dimensions from the text.

Build the linkage
- Review the updated illustration. Open Make’s Howtoons project page and follow its linked full-size comic. The page notes that the instructions were updated after issues arose when people reproduced the original project.
- Drill three holes in each stick. Use the comic to locate the holes; the accompanying written explanation does not state hole spacing.
- Join the sticks at their pivots. Fasten the linked sticks with machine screws and nuts, placing a washer between sticks at the pivots. Make says the washers help reduce binding.
- Fit the gripper. Attach soft sponge pieces to the arm’s end to make contact surfaces for objects. Glue is listed as optional; the project text does not give a tested attachment method or gripper dimensions.
- Move the arm by hand. Bring the sticks together to extend the linkage and push them apart to fold it back. If the pivots bind, check their alignment and the washer placement against the comic.
What to expect—and what is not specified
Make labels the project “Easy” and gives a time estimate of one hour. Those are the publisher’s rating and estimate, not independently measured results. The page is presented as a project for children, but it does not state a formal age rating or provide a safety protocol.
The written instructions do not state a maximum reach, safe working load, project cost or fastener dimensions. Treat this as a hands-on demonstration and use it only for light objects; do not infer that it can lift a particular weight or reach a particular distance.

Design checks while you build
- Movement: Washers between the sticks are the stated aid for reducing binding. Check that the pivots can move as shown in the comic.
- Reach and stability: These are useful things to observe as you operate the arm, but the project does not publish measured performance or a tested relationship between them.
- Gripper fit: The sponge ends are intended to grip objects. Object size and shape will affect whether they make contact, but the Howtoons page does not give tested object limits.
