Samsung says routine detergent or cleaner is not needed. The exact control sequence depends on the model, so use the manual for your washer’s full model code if its label or controls differ.
How to run Self Clean
- Empty the washer. Remove all clothing and other items. Samsung warns that laundry left in the tub can be damaged during the cleaning cycle.
- Select the cleaning cycle. Look for Self Clean, Self Clean+ or Pure Cycle. Depending on the model, you may choose it with the cycle dial, a dedicated control or a display menu.
- Start the cycle and let it complete. Do not add routine detergent, bleach or washing-machine cleaner. Samsung says additional cleaner is not needed for the built-in cycle. [Samsung’s Self Clean guidance]
- Check the drum when it finishes. If suds or residue remain, Samsung recommends running Self Clean again. Follow your model manual if it gives different instructions.
Samsung’s general guidance estimates that a front-load Self Clean cycle can take up to about four hours, but timing varies by model. Check the display or manual and plan for a long cycle. [Samsung support]
How often to run it
Samsung US recommends running the cleaning cycle about once a month or every 30–40 loads. Its cycle reference describes a reminder after 40 washes for front-load models; reminder behavior varies by washer. Cycle names and model differences
Samsung uses Self Clean, Self Clean+ and Pure Cycle across different washer models. The feature is for cleaning the washer, not washing clothes. The name, selection method, reminder interval, duration and instructions for any special treatment can vary. Use the owner’s manual for the complete model code rather than assuming another Samsung washer’s button sequence applies. Samsung Canada likewise notes that maintenance guidance depends on the model. Should you add bleach or another cleaner?
For the normal Self Clean cycle, Samsung says not to add detergent or cleaner; bleach is not a routine ingredient either. If your washer does not have a built-in tub-cleaning cycle, consult its manual for the recommended alternative. When Samsung’s odor procedure calls for bleach
Samsung describes a separate odor- or mildew-treatment procedure that may involve liquid chlorine bleach. It specifies where bleach goes and says to start the cleaning cycle immediately afterward; bleach should not be left sitting in the washer. The correct compartment and cycle instructions depend on the model, so follow the model manual and Samsung’s procedure rather than applying a generic bleach recipe. If the washer still smells afterward
Self Clean addresses the tub, but odors can also involve other parts of the washer. Samsung recommends drying the machine with the door and detergent drawer open, and includes cleaning the front-load pump filter among its maintenance guidance. Check the gasket, dispenser and filter for residue or buildup, following the instructions for your model. Odor alone does not identify a specific fault; Samsung advises contacting support if odor or visible mold persists after several attempts.
