For a quick estimate, a three-cushion sofa typically takes 10–13 yards, a loveseat 9–11 yards, and a dining chair 2–3 yards. Those are planning ranges, not guarantees: the actual amount depends on the furniture’s shape and details as well as fabric width, pattern repeat, and direction. Use the chart below to narrow the estimate, then verify the cut plan before ordering.
Upholstery fabric yardage chart
JOANN’s Home Décor Field Guide lists these estimates for common furniture types. It cautions that actual yardage depends on fabric design and repeat.

These figures are category-level estimates, not a promise of how much a particular piece will use. The guide’s own wording is: “Yardage given below is for estimating purposes only. Actual yardage needed will depend on fabric design and repeat.” See the JOANN Home Décor Field Guide.
Why yardage charts can disagree
Different charts may describe different furniture dimensions, styles, or construction details. For example, FabricMeasure’s comparison lists 10 yards for a six-foot sofa from C.S. Osborne & Co. and 18 yards for a three-cushion sofa from InteriorDecorating.com. Those figures refer to the examples and assumptions in those charts; they are not directly interchangeable requirements for your own sofa. Compare the chart examples at FabricMeasure.

When using any estimate, check whether its example matches your piece in size and style, and whether it accounts for skirts, cushions, arm covers, or other details. Published charts do not always specify all of those assumptions.
What can change the amount you need
- Fabric width: A calculation based on one width may not work for narrower or wider fabric. Check the usable width stated by the seller. FibreCalcs and InteriorDecorating.com discuss width as a factor.
- Pattern repeat and matching: Repeating motifs may need to line up across separate panels, which can increase the amount required. JOANN and InteriorDecorating.com identify pattern repeat as a consideration. JOANN’s guide explains the estimate’s limitation.
- Direction and nap: Directional fabric or a nap may limit how pieces can be placed on the fabric, affecting the cut layout. See Revolution Fabrics’ guide and FibreCalcs.
- Furniture dimensions and construction: Arms, cushions, skirts, and the overall shape alter the pieces that must be cut. An estimate for a simpler style may not cover those details.
- The cutting plan and allowance: Revolution Fabrics says its calculator includes a 10% overage. That allowance is specific to its calculator, not a universal rule; the upholsterer’s layout can change the final requirement. See Revolution Fabrics’ calculator guidance.
How to settle on an order amount
- Identify the closest furniture category. Use the chart range for a starting point, not a final order quantity.
- Check the actual fabric details. Confirm the width, pattern repeat, and whether the material has a direction or nap.
- Account for the furniture’s features. Note its dimensions and details such as skirts, separate cushions, and shaped arms.
- Ask for a project-specific cut estimate. Have the upholsterer or fabric seller check the actual piece and intended layout before you buy.
Only after confirming those details should you choose upholstery fabric by the yard; the chart alone cannot establish an exact order quantity.
