After replacing the water filter, reset the reminder with the control assigned to your Samsung refrigerator. Many models use a three-second press-and-hold on Filter Reset; others assign the function to a different button or an on-screen menu. The exact sequence varies by model, so use the label and your refrigerator’s manual rather than assuming one method fits every Samsung fridge.
Before you reset the reminder
Check that the replacement cartridge is compatible with your refrigerator. Samsung recommends identifying the filter by the refrigerator’s user manual or the number printed on the existing cartridge. The reset only clears or restarts the reminder timer; it does not install a filter or confirm that the cartridge is the right one. See Samsung’s Fridge Water Filter Finder.
Reset the filter reminder on your model
First look at the control panel for a button or label that explicitly identifies the reset function. Button assignments and touchscreen menus differ across Samsung models.
Models with a Filter Reset button
- Press and hold Filter Reset for about three seconds.
- Release it when the indicator turns off or changes. If it does not respond, check the refrigerator manual for the exact button and sequence.
Some models assign the reset to a secondary function on Alarm, Water Filter, Ice/Water, Water, or Ice Type / Filter Change. Certain models may require two buttons together. Use the panel label and the instructions for your model; do not try button combinations at random. Samsung describes these control variations in its replacement guide.

Family Hub and other touchscreen models
On Family Hub models, Samsung’s described route is Apps → Fridge Manager → Fridge Settings → Water Filter → Reset. Samsung Canada’s instructions add a Proceed confirmation. Other touchscreen or arrow-button models may use More Options → Filter Reset or Settings → Water Filter. These menu names are model-specific, not universal. Follow the route shown in your refrigerator’s manual or Samsung’s model-grouped instructions.
RF4289 and RSG309 models
Samsung’s instructions for these named models use Settings → Water Filter, followed by holding Reset until the indicator status changes. Do not apply this sequence to another model unless its manual confirms it.

Flush the new filter
After installation, dispense and discard water as directed in the manual for your refrigerator. The quantity differs by regional instructions: Samsung US says to dispense several gallons, without specifying an exact amount in the cited guidance; Samsung UK specifies about 10 litres or 6–7 minutes. Those amounts are not interchangeable universal rules. Follow the instructions for your model and market. See Samsung’s UK guidance.
If the light stays on or you notice a problem
- The reminder will not reset: Check the manual for the precise reset control and repeat only that model-specific action. Samsung advises consulting the manual if the indicator does not reset.
- Water flow is slow: Check that the cartridge is correctly aligned, fully seated, and locked into place. A noticeable change in dispensing speed can also indicate that a filter change is due, regardless of the indicator.
- The filter will not lock: Confirm that you removed its protective cap and aligned the cartridge as directed for your model.
- The dispenser leaks: Remove and reinstall the filter, ensuring that it is seated and locked correctly.
- Water tastes or smells unusual: Dispense additional water to clear air or carbon residue, following your refrigerator’s flushing instructions.

What the filter light means
The indicator is generally a time-based reminder, not a sensor that tests water quality. Samsung Canada describes a reminder that comes on after about six months; depending on the model, the light may turn red or change color. Usage and water conditions can affect when a filter needs replacement, so do not treat the light as a direct measurement of water quality.
A Samsung/Dacor manual for the specific DRF48XX00AP refrigerator says about six months typically corresponds to about 300 gallons (1,136 litres) and warns that high lime content can shorten filter life. That volume is specific to that product and should not be generalized to all Samsung refrigerators.
