Choose the safest way to reach the window
Assess the specific window and site before choosing equipment. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the UK workplace safety regulator, advises avoiding work at height where reasonably practicable. Its window-cleaning guidance names cleaning from inside and using telescopic water-fed poles as examples. - Use a ladder only if you can place it securely on firm, level ground and maintain a stable working position.
- Keep your body within a stable position on the ladder. If the window is beyond comfortable reach, descend and reposition rather than leaning sideways.
- Do not use a ladder if it is damaged, unsuitable, unstable or obstructed, or if the task cannot be completed without overreaching.
- Do not substitute furniture, a roof, a sill or an improvised platform for suitable access equipment.
The HSE’s broader work-at-height guidance prioritizes avoiding height, then preventing falls where height cannot be avoided, and minimizing the distance and consequences of a fall (HSE: Work at height). This hierarchy is a useful way to compare options, though legal duties depend on jurisdiction.

Call a professional for difficult access
Arrange a professional high-window cleaning service if the window cannot be reached safely from inside or from the ground, if the ground or surroundings make a pole or ladder unsafe, or if the work calls for specialist access equipment. HSE lists rope access, travelling ladders, gantries and suspended access equipment as examples for difficult access, with planning and coordination needed for the work (HSE: Specialist access equipment).
Ask how the service will access the specific windows, what hazards it has identified and whether the people operating any specialist equipment are competent to do so. Avoid treating a complex access method as a do-it-yourself upgrade to an ordinary ladder or pole.
