A drip coffee maker, grinder-equipped brewer, espresso machine, and bean-to-cup machine can require different methods—so vinegar or a cleaning cycle that is approved for one model may not be right for another.
What to clean after each brew
Routine washing removes coffee grounds and oils from parts you can access; descaling addresses mineral buildup inside the water path. They are different jobs, and one does not replace the other. Dave Cutler, head of training at Lavazza UK, notes that coffee oils can leave residue that goes stale over time, which is why regular cleaning matters. Ideal Home’s expert guidance also stresses following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Check the manual. Confirm which components can be removed, whether they are hand-washable or dishwasher-safe, and which descaler and cleaning program the machine permits. Instructions vary: GE says the parts on its Profile Grind & Brew are not dishwasher-safe, while KitchenAid’s guidance depends on the part and model. See GE’s Profile Grind & Brew guidance and KitchenAid’s coffee-maker cleaning guidance.
- Empty grounds and wash coffee-contact parts. Rinse the filter or brew basket, then wash the carafe and lid as the manual allows. GE recommends warm, soapy water and a soft-bristled brush for deeper cleaning of the covered model’s parts; avoid abrasives that can scratch surfaces.
- Wipe and dry removable pieces. Use warm, soapy water where the manual allows. KitchenAid advises leaving the reservoir lid and filter basket open to dry, which helps prevent moisture lingering in those areas.
- Clean espresso and milk components on their own schedule. Run the machine’s cleaning program and use approved products. Wash a milk container after use, and flush and wipe the steam wand after steaming, following the machine’s instructions.
When to descale—and how often
Descaling removes mineral deposits from the internal water path. Use the machine’s alert or manual schedule as the deciding guide; water hardness and usage affect how often it is needed. KitchenAid gives about once a month for daily brewing as general guidance, while Braun also says frequency depends on water hardness and use. Treat monthly as a starting point for a frequently used drip brewer, not a universal interval. KitchenAid and Braun’s instructions provide brand-specific guidance.
Some prompts are specific to a model rather than a general schedule. GE’s Profile Grind & Brew raises a Clean Grind alert after 25 grinding cycles and has a separate descale alert. For models using Cuisinart’s charcoal water filter, Cuisinart says to replace or rinse the filter every 60 days or after 60 uses; verify the interval and filter type for your exact machine. These are manufacturer recommendations, not universal standards.

How to run a descaling cycle
Use the product and sequence specified for your machine. Do not assume a descaling solution, tablet, or vinegar recipe can be substituted for another.
- Check the manual for the approved descaler and cycle. Remove the water filter and any coffee or filter from the basket if the model instructions say to.
- Run the prescribed clean or descale program. For covered KitchenAid models, the instructions call for removing the water filter and running the descaling cycle. Braun’s covered-model instructions likewise specify removing listed filters and running the prescribed process.
- Flush the machine with fresh water for the number of cycles the manual requires. KitchenAid directs users of the covered models to run two full-carafe cycles with fresh, cool water; Braun also specifies two full cycles for covered models.
Braun says its automatic descaling cycle, including rinsing, can take up to 45 minutes for the covered models. That duration should not be applied to other machines.

Is vinegar safe for a coffee maker?
Only if the instructions for your exact machine permit it. The recommended mixture and process differ even among drip-machine guidance: KitchenAid describes equal parts water and white vinegar for its general drip-coffee-maker guidance, followed by two fresh-water cycles. Cuisinart describes three parts water to one part vinegar for a normal brew cycle when a machine has no clean function. Do not combine these recipes or transfer either one to an unlisted model.
Vinegar should not be treated as a universal espresso-machine descaler. Sam Pearce, community manager at Chimney Fire Coffee, says, “While white vinegar can work as a descaler for appliances such as kettles or smaller coffee pots, we don’t recommend using this method for expensive espresso machines.” Cutler’s advice is to use approved cleaning products and follow the manufacturer’s directions. These are expert recommendations; the machine maker’s own instructions determine what is permitted.

Signs your machine may need attention
Longer brewing, gurgling or unusual noises, excessive steam, visible white mineral residue, or coffee that tastes off can be reasons to check the manual’s descaling guidance. KitchenAid lists a cleaning indicator, excessive brew time, gurgling or unusual noises, visible white residue, and off-tasting coffee as possible descaling cues.
On GE’s Profile Grind & Brew, a descale alert—or an Add Water alert that persists during brewing despite a filled reservoir—can indicate reduced heating efficiency from hard-water buildup. This is a model-specific diagnostic prompt, not proof that another machine has the same issue.
