Decorative garden balls—also called garden art balls, spheres, orbs, or gazing balls—can be made by covering a sturdy sphere with mosaic pieces or by casting a concrete shell in a globe-shaped form. For a straightforward colorful project, use a bowling ball or thick glass lamp globe as the base and attach flat glass gems with an outdoor-suitable adhesive. Choose materials by checking their labels for compatibility with your base and outdoor exposure; no method guarantees year-round durability in every climate.
Choose a garden-ball project
The main decision is whether you want a patterned surface made from attached pieces or a solid concrete finish. Mosaic work involves arranging and attaching a covering; casting involves wet cement, a form, and handling the finished sphere. The sources do not provide a controlled comparison of project time, difficulty, weight, cost, or longevity, so choose based on the look and process you prefer.

Make a mosaic garden ball
Gather materials
- A sturdy bowling ball or thick glass lamp globe
- Flat-backed glass gems, also called flat marbles; the cited tutorial gives 200 as an example, but the amount depends on the ball’s size and your design
- Spray paint for an optional background color
- Exterior clear-drying silicone sealant, or another adhesive labeled for the specific base and outdoor exposure
- Optional exterior-suitable grout and sealer if your design leaves wider gaps
The The Garden Glove mosaic tutorial describes glass gems and exterior clear-drying silicone among its materials. Follow the directions on each product label, including any surface-preparation, curing, and weather-exposure requirements.
Prepare and cover the sphere
- Clean the base and let it dry fully. Apply a background color if desired, following the spray-paint label and allowing it to dry as directed.
- Lay out your pattern before gluing. This helps you estimate gem coverage and place colors deliberately.
- Attach the flat-backed pieces with an adhesive labeled for both the base material and outdoor use. Work in sections and follow the adhesive’s application and curing directions.
- If the design has wider gaps, use grout only if its label supports the materials and outdoor conditions. Apply any sealer according to its instructions.
- Let all materials cure for the time specified on their labels before moving or placing the ball outdoors.
One mosaic maker reported preferring silicone for outdoor balls because it is not water-soluble. That account also says roughing up bowling balls with a grinder was optional in that maker’s experience: tiles adhered in a later class without grinding. This is an individual project account, not a universal test of adhesives or surface preparation. Check the adhesive manufacturer’s directions rather than assuming the same approach will work with every base and covering.

Cast a concrete sphere
A concrete-sphere method uses an old glass lamp globe or sphere as a form. The tutorial’s author reported that a playground ball did not preserve a perfectly round shape, so it may not suit a project where a true sphere matters. The form, concrete product, and removal method determine the work involved; follow the concrete product’s instructions for mixing, placement, curing, and safe handling.
Protect yourself when working with cement
Wet portland cement can damage skin because it is caustic, abrasive, and absorbs moisture, according to OSHA’s guidance on preventing skin problems from working with portland cement. Wear skin and eye protection appropriate to the product, avoid contact with wet mix and cement dust, follow the safety directions on the product, and wash promptly if cement contacts your skin.

The tutorial author described the project as costing “less than $15 for three balls.” That was a project-specific claim in an article originally published March 2, 2020, and updated May 7, 2026—not a current price estimate or a general cost for making concrete spheres. Glass gems offer a simple colorful mosaic; tile and stone create other surface patterns. The right adhesive, grout, and sealant depend on the base and covering materials as well as the conditions where the ball will sit. Confirm that each product is labeled for those materials and for the intended outdoor exposure. The cited guides do not establish a universal product combination or guarantee that a garden ball will remain intact through every season.
