A successful installation depends on measuring each opening, choosing compatible hinges and slides, and fitting each front to the cabinet rather than assuming every opening is square. Work toward a consistent reveal—the visible gap around each front—and check that doors and drawers move freely before fastening hardware permanently.
Plan the fit before building or ordering fronts
Inspect the cabinet first. Note whether it has a face frame or a frameless construction, check each opening for obstructions and irregularities, and decide how the fronts should align with one another. Measure every door and drawer opening individually; openings in the same cabinet can differ or be out of square. Eagle Woodworking’s measuring instructions cover replacement drawer fronts using the same opening-measurement approach as doors.
Choose the hinges and drawer slides before settling dimensions. Their construction, mounting positions and clearances affect how a front and, for drawers, the box must fit. If ordering custom fronts, confirm the cabinet construction, hinge style, boring requirements and hardware plan with the supplier.
Choose a reveal that suits the cabinet and hardware
The reveal is the gap between a front and the surrounding frame. There is no single dimension that applies to every inset installation: the target depends on the cabinet, front material, hinge and desired fit. Treat published dimensions as examples tied to their particular methods or systems, then check the chosen hardware’s instructions and the actual opening.

Use shims to make the gap repeatable while positioning a front. Fine Homebuilding’s 1/8-inch example uses shims slightly thinner than its target during fitting, then full-size shims to inspect the reveal. The appropriate shim thickness for your job depends on your chosen target.
Make and fit inset doors
Build close to the opening, then trim to fit
Fine Homebuilding describes making a solid-wood door to the opening dimensions and trimming it for a snug fit. Because either the frame or the door may be out of square, judge the actual reveal in the opening instead of relying only on nominal measurements. Fit one edge at a time: place the door in the opening, mark the next edge from the cabinet, remove a small amount of material, and return the door to check the result. Woodcraft’s approach also uses shims to position the door, establishes aligned edges, transfers hinge locations and fits the latch edge cautiously. Whichever approach you use, take small passes with a suitable plane or saw and recheck the door in the opening between cuts. If you are crosscutting a narrow door on a table saw, account for kickback risk; WOOD’s project demonstrates a cradle-style sled rather than an unsupported cut.
Select and install compatible hinges
Inset hinges must suit the cabinet construction and the desired opening. Non-mortise hinges and mortised butt hinges are distinct options: they require different preparation, so follow the instructions for the hinge you selected rather than combining methods. Before cutting a mortise into the door or frame, test the depth and fit on scrap.

Transfer hinge locations with the door held in its intended position by shims. Where the method calls for it, attach the hinge temporarily or with a single screw first, hang the door, and check its swing, clearance and reveal. Make corrections before installing the remaining screws. Complete hinge and strike placement only after the door fits and moves without binding.
Fit drawer boxes and inset fronts to the slides
Select the slides before setting drawer-box width or mounting position. Required side clearance and mounting geometry vary by slide, so use the selected manufacturer’s installation instructions; the sources here do not establish one clearance that applies to all slide models. WOOD’s project describes a full-extension, ball-bearing example with one slide member on the drawer and another on the cabinet. It gives a 100-pound rating for that example only—not for drawer slides generally. See WOOD’s project for its illustrated method.

Mount the cabinet-side members square and parallel, and ensure the drawer-side members are aligned with them. WOOD describes using a positioning jig to keep multiple cabinet-side glides parallel and recommends checking that the glide is square. Leave room for adjustment where the mounting holes permit it. After installing the box, fit its inset front to the opening with the same careful, incremental process used for doors: use consistent shims, check alignment against neighboring fronts, and remove material a little at a time.

With doors and drawers installed, open and close each one and inspect the reveals around the full perimeter. Correct binding or uneven gaps before tightening temporary fasteners or adding the remaining hardware screws. Check that each drawer travels smoothly and that adjacent fronts align as intended.

A door may need a stop or catch to sit flush against the frame. WOOD’s project uses a spring catch and suggests locating it near the pull action so opening the door is less likely to twist it. Account for wood movement as well: the Cabinet Joint notes that movement can cause a corner to protrude over time, so a fit that is tight at installation may not remain unchanged.
Finish the fronts before installing glass stops in ordinary work; WOOD notes that its demonstration sequence differs. Keep the fitting, hardware and finishing steps in an order that protects finished surfaces and allows you to make needed adjustments.
