To get organized at home, choose one small area, sort what belongs there, remove what you no longer need, and give the remaining items convenient, consistent homes. Start with containers you already own; buy storage only after measuring the space and deciding what must fit. The 14 habits below are practical starting points, not a proven formula that works for every household.
Build a system around how your household uses the space
Organization is less about making every surface look perfect than knowing what you own and where to find it. Sharon Lowenheim, a certified professional organizer, describes consistency as the key: decide where things go, then put them back there. Consumer Reports’ linen-closet guidance makes the same practical point.
That means a workable home for an item should be easy for the people who use it to reach and restore. A system that looks tidy but makes everyday belongings difficult to retrieve is unlikely to be convenient to maintain.
14 simple habits for a more organized home
-
Start with one small area
Choose a single surface, drawer, shelf, or category. A contained task makes it easier to see what you have and decide where it belongs.

-
Remove what no longer belongs
Set aside items you do not use or that belong elsewhere. Consider donating usable belongings; do not let the donation pile become a permanent new storage category.
-
Group similar items
Gather like with like so you can see how much space each category needs and choose a sensible home for it.

Give incoming papers a simple landing place
Use one designated spot for papers that need attention. Separate temporary papers from records you need to keep so an incoming pile does not become an unexamined archive.
-
Label shared or hard-to-identify storage
A clear label can help other household members find and return things. Use labels when they solve a real retrieval problem, such as on an opaque bin or a shared file area.

Make everyday storage visible and accessible
Choose an arrangement that lets you see or reach what you need. A neat stack can still be frustrating if getting to one item means unpacking several others.
-
Measure before buying organizers
Check the inside dimensions of drawers, shelves, and cabinets, as well as the items you intend to store. A tray or bin that does not fit wastes space or obstructs access.
-
Try what you already own
Repurpose suitable bins, baskets, or dividers before shopping. Add new storage only to solve a specific problem left after sorting and measuring.

Repeat a small reset routine
Pick a simple time or cue to return misplaced items to their homes. Keep the routine realistic for the household and the spaces you are maintaining.
Choose storage aids by fit, access, and use
Storage products are tools, not the starting point. Consumer Reports’ roundup of organizers’ preferred storage items discusses options such as bins, drawer organizers, and shelf dividers. Match the tool to the space and how often you need its contents.
| Storage option | When it can help | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Clear bins | When seeing contents will help you find items. | Measure first, and avoid placing everyday items where they are difficult to reach. |
| Opaque bins | When you want to conceal visual clutter or store less frequently used items. | Use a useful external label if the contents are not obvious. |
| Drawer trays | When small items in a catch-all drawer need separate places. | Measure the drawer and check that the tray leaves room to open and use it comfortably. |
| Shelf dividers | When grouped stacks, such as linens, need help staying upright. | Check shelf dimensions and whether the divider makes items easier to remove. |
| Containers already at home | When an existing basket or bin fits the category and location. | Use it only if it keeps belongings accessible and the arrangement is easy to maintain. |
Make the system easy to maintain
Once an area is arranged, notice whether people can put things back without moving several other items or decoding overly specific labels. If not, simplify: reduce the number of categories, relocate an inconvenient home, or make frequently used items more accessible. Consumer Reports’ home-office guidance also discusses fitting organization choices to the space and what it needs to hold.
For pantry shelves, take inventory as you sort, including packages with only a little left or items kept for a possible future use. Consumer Reports’ pantry advice focuses on making contents and storage choices manageable rather than adding containers indiscriminately.
For broader decluttering ideas, see Consumer Reports’ guide to decluttering your home, Good Housekeeping’s pantry habits advice, and Utah State University Extension’s “Less Is More” resource. The habits here are practical applications of consumer and expert guidance; they have not been established as a tested 14-step program.
