Build this wooden Japanese-style toolbox around the tools you actually carry: size it for your longest tool, allow clearance for the stacked contents, then assemble a simple box with end grips and a lift-out sliding lid. Len Cullum’s Make: project is a practical starting point, not a fixed-size pattern; its project page rates the build moderate and estimates 38 hours.
Plan the size around your tools
Before cutting lumber, lay out the tools the box needs to carry. Start with the longest one, then stack the rest to determine the interior height and lid clearance. For his example, woodworker Len Cullum chose a 23-inch length to fit his saw and found his stacked tools measured just over 5 inches high. He used 1×8 stock for the sides. These are the dimensions of his example, not requirements for every toolbox.
Make a simple sketch and confirm that the handles, tool heads, and any protruding parts will clear the sides and lid. Keep in mind that the cut list below produces the example’s proportions; adjust it to your own tool layout before cutting.
Materials, tools, and example cut list
Materials
- One nominal 1×12 board and two nominal 1×8 boards, as used in Cullum’s example.
- Wood glue and screws or nails. Joinery or a combination of fastening methods can be used instead.
- At least two small clamps for holding parts during assembly.
Tools
- Table saw or chop saw with 12-inch cut capacity
- Handsaw
- Drill with 7/64- or 3/32-inch bits and a countersink or #6 counterbore
- Acid brush for applying glue
- Tape measure and adjustable square
- Two or more small clamps
- Low horses, optional
Choose straight, flat stock. Check the fit of parts before applying glue, and predrill near corners to reduce the chance of splitting.

Cut list for Cullum’s example
| Stock | Part | Quantity | Cut size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominal 1×12 | Bottom | 1 | 11-1/4 × 26 in. |
| Nominal 1×12 | Lid | 1 | 9-11/16 × 21-1/8 in. |
| Nominal 1×12 | Lid brace | 1 | 1-3/8 × 21-1/8 in. |
| Nominal 1×8 | Sides | 2 | 7-1/4 × 26 in. |
| Nominal 1×8 | Ends | 2 | 7-1/4 × 9-3/4 in. |
| Nominal 1×8 | Top ends | 2 | 3 × 11-1/4 in. |
| Nominal 1×8 | Lid supports | 2 | 1-1/2 × 11-1/4 in. |
| Nominal 1×8 | Grips | 2 | 1-1/2 × 9-3/4 in. |
These are the project’s specified dimensions. Lumber sold by nominal size does not necessarily measure that size after surfacing, so verify actual board dimensions and your own layout before making cuts.
Assemble the box
- Cut matching parts together. Cut the two sides, two ends, top ends, lid supports, and grips to their listed sizes. Grouping matching parts helps keep paired pieces consistent.
- Make the end assemblies. Attach a grip to each end. Use glue and your chosen fasteners, or a suitable joinery method. Check alignment before the glue sets.
- Build the body. Join the sides to the end assemblies to form the box. Square the assembly and check that the opening is consistent from end to end.
- Fasten the bottom. Fit the bottom to the body and attach it with glue and screws or nails, or another appropriate method. Predrill close to corners.
- Add the top ends and lid supports. Position these pieces at the upper edges as shown in the project plan, checking the opening and the lid’s path before fastening.
- Make and test the lid. Fit the lid and tabs so they slide into the opening without binding. Make small adjustments rather than forcing a tight fit.
The project allows nails, screws, glue, joinery, or combinations of these methods. Choose an approach that suits your stock and tools, and keep the assembly square while fastening.

Fit the sliding, lift-out lid
The lid board is specified about 1/16 inch narrower than the opening and 1-1/8 inches longer, with long and short tabs that guide it into place. Treat those clearances as a starting point: measure the opening on your assembled box and test the fit before finalizing the lid. Wood movement and small assembly differences can affect how freely it slides.
To install the lid, put the long tab in first and slide it until it stops. Lower the opposite end, then slide the lid back into position. Test the motion several times; the lid should seat and lift out without needing force.

Decide whether to add the diagonal brace
The diagonal lid brace is optional. Cullum says he likes its appearance and that it stiffens the lid and serves as a handle. If you include it, fit and attach it after confirming that the lid still travels freely and can be lifted out as intended.
Finish and load the toolbox
Erase layout lines if desired, then sand or plane edges flush. Load the tools you planned for and check that they sit below the lid and do not obstruct its movement. Cullum wrote that the box had carried his tools to nearly every big job over the preceding 15 years; that is his personal account, not an independently measured durability result. The project details and cut plan are in Make:’s How to Make a Handy Japanese Toolbox.

When a ready-made box makes more sense
If you want a compact purchased option rather than a custom wooden carrier, TOMEI’s catalogue describes a Toyo Steel collaboration as a lightweight, stackable, pressed-steel handheld box for small items. The listing gives external dimensions of 203 × 109 × 56 mm, internal dimensions of 186 × 88 × 41 mm, weight of 0.4 kg, and a listed price of ¥3,500; catalogue details may change. It is a different product and scale from Cullum’s wooden project. See the TOMEI toolbox listing.
A general-purpose home tool set is not a substitute for the saws and project-specific equipment above. For example, IKEA Japan’s TRIXIG 15-piece set is listed for small home DIY and includes a hammer, wrench, combination pliers, bit screwdriver, assorted bits, and a separate rubber damper.
