To join long wood handrail sections, use a hanger bolt to draw the square-cut ends together, and place the seam on or near a rail support. A washer and nut, tightened through an access hole drilled into the underside of the rail, secure the joint. For an outdoor ramp rail, use a stainless-steel or galvanized hanger bolt and finish the wood with exterior-grade paint—but the seam will not be completely watertight.
What you need
- A hanger bolt sized for the rail and project. No universal bolt diameter, length, or pilot-hole size is specified; choose them for the wood and connection requirements.
- A washer and nut that fit the bolt, plus two nuts to help drive its screw-threaded end.
- A drill and bits for the pilot hole and the slightly oversized hole for the bolt end.
- A 1-inch spade or Forstner bit for the underside access hole, and a small wrench.
- For an outdoor rail, a stainless-steel or galvanized hanger bolt and exterior-grade paint.
How to join the rail sections
- Plan and cut the seam. Square-cut both rail ends. Position the joint on or near a rail support.
- Mark and drill the first end. Mark the center of one mating end and drill a centered pilot hole sized for the hanger bolt’s screw-threaded end. The appropriate pilot-hole size depends on the bolt and wood; no universal dimension is specified.
- Drive in the hanger bolt. Thread two nuts onto the bolt and tighten them against each other. Use the nuts to turn the bolt and drive its screw-threaded end into the pilot hole.
- Prepare the mating end. Mark its center and drill a hole for the bolt end about 1/8 inch larger than the bolt.
- Make the access hole. On the underside of the mating rail, use a 1-inch spade or Forstner bit to drill an access hole that intersects the bolt hole. This opening allows you to fit the washer and nut and reach them with a wrench.
- Join and tighten. Insert the protruding bolt into the mating rail. Through the access hole, fit the washer and thread on the nut. Finger-tighten, align the rail ends, then tighten the nut with a small wrench.
Protect an outdoor joint from water
Use a stainless-steel or galvanized hanger bolt for exterior work. Apply a couple of coats of exterior-grade paint to improve water resistance. Paint can help protect the joint, but it will not make the seam watertight; WOOD Magazine cautions that no exterior joint will be completely watertight (WOOD Magazine’s handrail-joint answer).
Check the connection against the project requirements
This method explains how to pull two wood rail ends together; it does not establish that the connection is a tested structural joint or is code-approved for every handrail. The cited how-to does not specify bolt diameter or length, embedment, wood species, support spacing, or an allowable load. Those details must suit the actual rail and its requirements.
If the rail is part of a ramp or stairway, check applicable local requirements with your local code authority or building inspector. Deckorators’ FAQ summarizes general IRC stair handrail requirements and also advises checking local code or asking an inspector (Deckorators FAQ). Do not treat a general stair-rail summary as approval of this particular joint.
