If you can see and reach it, try lifting it out gently with a flexible grabber or long pliers. If it is out of reach, a wet-dry vacuum with a nylon stocking over its nozzle is an optional top-side attempt. It may require removing the sink stopper and linkage, but not opening the P-trap.
What to do first
- Turn off the faucet and leave the sink unused. Do not run water to check whether the cap has passed through. Roto-Rooter’s retrieval guidance says, “First, DO NOT run water into the drain,” because water can move an object farther from reach. Roto-Rooter’s drain retrieval instructions and HQ Plumbing & Air’s sink guidance also advise stopping water use.
- Look into the drain with a flashlight. Lift or remove the stopper if needed to see the opening. If the cap is visible and you can grasp it without nudging it deeper, use a flexible claw grabber or long pliers. Pull slowly; stop if the cap slips away, resists, or is no longer reachable.
- If it is not within reach, consider suction only if you already have a wet-dry vacuum. Follow the vacuum maker’s directions and use a nylon stocking over the nozzle to catch the cap. Do not use an ordinary household vacuum around water; Roto-Rooter warns of electrocution risk.
- Stop if the cap does not come back up. Keep the sink unused and contact a plumber rather than trying to flush it through.
Choosing a top-side retrieval method
| Method | When it may make sense | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible grabber or long pliers | The cap is visible or clearly within reach. | Reach down carefully and lift it without pushing it farther into the drain. Stop if it slips or resists. |
| Wet-dry vacuum with a nylon stocking filter | The cap is not reachable by hand but may still be near the drain opening, and you already have the proper vacuum. | Place a nylon stocking over the nozzle so the cap can be caught. A sink pop-up stopper and plunger rod may need to come out to expose the drain and create suction; this is not P-trap disassembly. |
| Plumber | The cap is not visible or reachable, or a careful top-side attempt fails. | Leave the sink unused and have the object retrieved without risking pushing it farther into the plumbing. |
Does removing the stopper count as disassembly?
It depends on what you mean by disassembly. Roto-Rooter’s wet-dry vacuum procedure removes the sink stopper and plunger rod before positioning the nozzle at the drain. That is access to the stopper and its linkage; it does not require opening the P-trap. If you are not comfortable removing those parts, skip the vacuum method and call a plumber if the cap cannot be reached from above.
Roto-Rooter describes using a wet-dry vacuum and nylon stocking, while Fine Homebuilding recounts a contributor’s successful retrieval of an earring using a shop vacuum, flexible hose, and stocking filter. That account is anecdotal, involves a different object, and does not establish how often suction will retrieve a toothpaste cap. Fine Homebuilding’s P-trap retrieval account describes the example.
What not to try
- Do not run water. It may carry the cap farther into the plumbing.
- Do not use an ordinary household vacuum. Roto-Rooter warns that contact with water can create an electrocution hazard.
- Do not use a magnet. A toothpaste cap is plastic; magnet advice for metal objects does not apply.
- Do not pour drain cleaner into the sink to retrieve it. It will not bring the cap back, and Mowery Heating, Cooling & Plumbing says drain cleaner may make later plumbing work more hazardous.
- Do not keep probing if the cap is moving away or out of reach. A failed top-side attempt is the point to stop and get professional help.
When to call a plumber
Call a plumber if you cannot see or safely reach the cap, the wet-dry vacuum attempt fails, or you suspect the object has moved beyond the accessible section of the drain. Keep the sink out of use until it is retrieved. Roto-Rooter advises calling a plumber when retrieval methods fail, and HQ Plumbing & Air recommends professional help when an item has passed the trap or is otherwise inaccessible. Roto-Rooter’s drain-retrieval advice and HQ Plumbing & Air’s sink guidance cover those limits.
