Before digging, identify where the water comes from and where it can legally and safely go. A shallow yard drain may be manageable as a DIY project; deep, complicated, or foundation-adjacent drainage needs professional assessment.
What a French drain does—and when it fits
A French drain collects water through a permeable zone of drainage rock and filter fabric, then conveys it toward an outlet through perforated pipe or, in some designs, a gravel trench. It can help with a low spot, surface runoff, or shallow water moving across a yard. It is not automatically a solution for basement or crawlspace seepage, major flooding, or every wet-soil problem.
Start by distinguishing the source: roof runoff, surface flow from higher ground, a persistent low spot, or shallow groundwater may call for different routes or systems. A hillside drain may run along the contour to intercept water, then turn downslope toward its outlet. A shallow yard French drain is not interchangeable with a footing drain or a designed stormwater infiltration system.
Choose the route and outlet before excavation
Trace the water’s path and select a route that intercepts it. Plan the outlet first: possible destinations in the Building America Solution Center guidance include a drywell, a storm sewer where permitted, or a downslope location on the property. The receiving site must be suitable, and local rules govern discharge. Do not send water where it could create a drainage problem for a neighbor. The Delaware DNREC guidance also emphasizes that success depends on the drainage site.

Set a project-specific depth and slope
There is no single trench depth or slope that applies to every yard. The Building America Solution Center’s illustrated residential guidance describes a trench at least 22 inches deep and 14 inches wide, while DNREC categorizes simple shallow DIY yard drains as 8 to 24 inches deep. Those figures come from different guidance contexts; they are not universal code dimensions.
Slope recommendations also depend on the design. Washington State University Extension Clark County gives examples of 0.5% to 1%—a 1-foot drop over 100 feet equals 1%. The USDA Forest Service specifies a minimum continuous 1% in its underdrain guidance, while the Building America Solution Center calls for positive slope. Treat these as source-specific examples, not a universal rule. Establish the outlet elevation first, then use a transit or laser level to verify the planned fall continuously.

- 【Helps Redirect Everyday Rainwater Runoff】 This low-profile downspout extension kit helps guide rainwater away from the home and nearby landscaping. The flexible hose extends up to 6.5 ft (approx. 2 m), making it easier to direct everyday runoff toward a more suitable drainage area.
- 【Low-Profile Design for Residential Use】 Featuring a 10 x 10 inch catch basin, this drainage set is designed for residential yard drainage applications. The low-profile structure blends more naturally into lawns and landscaped areas while helping manage runoff around the foundation area.
- 【Flexible Hose with Secure Connection】 The corrugated drainage hose is made from durable PVC material and is designed for outdoor use. It connects securely to the basin outlet and offers flexibility for routing water in the desired direction when installed properly.
- 【Grate Helps Reduce Larger Debris Entry】 The top grate helps block larger leaves and debris from entering the drainage path, which may help reduce buildup and support smoother water flow during routine rain conditions. Regular inspection and cleaning are recommended for best results.
- 【Please Check Dimensions & Installation Area Before Purchase】 Ideal for use in lawns, landscaped edges, and other non-foot-traffic areas around the home. For best performance, install on level ground and confirm the downspout setup, product dimensions, and drainage direction before purchase.
Gather materials and tools
- Perforated pipe: A 4-inch diameter appears in multiple official references. The Building America Solution Center describes 4-inch perforated PVC with the holes facing down and prefers smooth PVC over corrugated pipe in its design because corrugated pipe is more likely to collect sediment and clog. Follow the selected product and project design.
- Solid conveyance pipe: Use solid pipe for a non-collecting run where the design specifies it, such as carrying collected water from the drain to the outlet.
- Drainage fabric: Use geotextile intended for drainage to separate surrounding soil from the rock. Leave enough width to fold over the aggregate after the pipe is in place.
- Clean drainage aggregate: Use clean stone without fines; sizing varies by source and design. Do not assume pea gravel is a universal substitute. Snohomish County advises against pea gravel in its infiltration-system guidance.
- Grade-checking tool: A transit or laser level helps confirm a continuous fall toward the outlet.
Preassembled French drain products are also available, but their instructions and suitability still need to match the site. The sources give differing aggregate and trench details, so do not mix specifications from unrelated designs.
Install the drain
- Mark the route and outlet. Lay out the trench where it will intercept the water, and confirm that its planned end connects to the selected outlet.
- Verify the grade. Set the outlet elevation, then check the route with a transit or laser level. Confirm that the line falls continuously without a low section that could hold water.
- Excavate to the design. Dig the specified trench width and depth for your project and local conditions. Keep utility markings visible and respect marked clearance requirements.
- Line and bed the trench. Lay drainage fabric with extra material extending up the sides and across the top. Add a bed of clean drainage rock.
- Place the pipe and connect the outlet. Install perforated pipe as specified by the design; the Building America Solution Center’s example uses 4-inch PVC with holes down. Connect the collecting run to the outlet, using solid pipe for a conveyance section where specified.
- Cover and close the trench. Cover the pipe with clean rock, then fold the fabric over the aggregate so soil is separated from the drainage zone. Finish with the planned surface material.
- Protect the system. Keep soil and sediment from washing onto exposed gravel, and protect the outlet from blockage where appropriate.

Check the result and watch for problems
After rain, check that water exits freely and that the outlet is not eroding ground or affecting an unintended area. If the drain does not move water, revisit the diagnosis, grade, outlet capacity, and whether soil fines or debris are entering the drainage zone. Clean rock and filter fabric help limit fine soil moving into the system, but they do not compensate for a poor route or unsuitable outlet.
The cited guidance does not establish a general service life or maintenance interval for ordinary DIY French drains. Inspect the outlet and visible surface after significant rain, and address blockage, erosion, or a change in drainage promptly.

How the design choice changes the job
| Approach | Typical role | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Gravel trench without pipe | May collect or infiltrate water in some settings | Suitability depends on soil, purpose, and destination; it is not a universal substitute for a pipe system. |
| Pipe-and-gravel French drain | Collects water through a rock-and-fabric zone and conveys it to an outlet | Requires appropriate grade, materials, and a suitable lawful outlet. |
| Prefabricated drain product | Can reduce assembly work | Follow the product instructions and confirm site suitability. |
| Foundation or engineered stormwater system | Addresses more complex or building-related drainage needs | Not equivalent to a shallow yard drain; get a professional assessment where appropriate. |
These approaches differ in purpose and design, so compare the water source, soil, trench geometry, pipe and fabric specifications, achievable grade, outlet conditions, and project complexity before choosing.
