Fix a leaking garden hose by first finding where the water escapes: a threaded connection usually needs its washer or seal checked, a failed end fitting may need replacement, and a hole in the hose body calls for a temporary patch or a correctly matched coupling. Turn the water on gently to trace the leak, then shut it off before disconnecting or cutting anything.
Find where the hose is leaking
Run water gently and watch for the first place it appears. A spray or drip can travel along the hose, so check the fitting itself and the nearby hose for cuts or cracks before deciding that a connector is at fault. Shut off the water before taking a connection apart.
- At the faucet or another threaded connection: Inspect the seal, fitting alignment and threads.
- At the hose-end connector: Check whether the washer has failed or the connector itself is damaged.
- In the hose body: Look for a pinhole, split or other damaged section.

Fix a leak at a threaded connection
Inspect the washer and fitting
Unscrew the hose and check the washer inside the female fitting. If it is missing, damaged or out of place, replace it with a washer that fits the connection. Also check that the fitting is aligned and threaded correctly; cross-threading or a loose connection can cause leaks.

Some quick-connect systems seal with O-rings rather than a flat washer. Hoselink says its fittings that connect to one another use an O-ring-to-O-ring seal; inspect both faces and replace a missing O-ring when working with that design. Fitting designs vary, so follow the instructions for your own hose and connectors. A washer or O-ring can address a failed seal, not a cracked fitting or damaged hose body. Replace a leaking or broken hose-end connector
If the hose-end connector is cracked, broken or still leaks after you check its seal, replacing the connector may be necessary. The replacement must match both the hose diameter and the end type you need—male or female. Do not assume one connector will fit every hose.

- Shut off the water and disconnect the hose.
- On a stable surface, carefully cut off the old connector with a sharp blade, making a clean, straight cut.
- Insert a compatible replacement connector into the hose and secure it with a stainless-steel clamp, following the fitting’s instructions.
- Reconnect the hose, turn the water on gently and check for leaks.
iFixit’s connector-replacement guide demonstrates this method with a 5/8-inch hose and a male connector; that example is not a universal size or fitting specification. Use the iFixit guide as a reference, and match the parts to your own hose.
Repair a pinhole or split in the hose body
Temporary pinhole patch
For a small pinhole, Scouting America’s Home Repairs pamphlet describes drying the hose, applying rubber-base cement and wrapping electrician’s tape in a spiral over the spot. Treat this as a temporary repair, not a substitute for replacing damaged material with a coupling.

Cut out the damaged section and fit a coupling
For a more permanent repair, the pamphlet recommends using a metal or plastic hose coupling that matches the hose diameter. Cut out the damaged section cleanly and squarely, then install the coupling according to its package directions. Match the part to the hose rather than relying on appearance alone; the pamphlet does not give a quantified lifespan for this repair.

The available repair guidance does not establish a universal number of leaks or amount of damage at which replacement is better than repair. Base the choice on whether the hose and its remaining fittings are still serviceable, and whether the damaged section can be removed cleanly for a compatible coupling.
