The reliable fix is two-part: remove the stink bugs that are already inside, then seal the openings they use to get in. Vacuuming, sweeping, hand-catching, and a soapy-water trap handle the immediate nuisance. Silicone caulk, foam sealant, weather stripping, repaired screens, and tight-fitting doors and windows provide the lasting control. Routine indoor insecticide spraying is usually ineffective and is not recommended by several extension and pesticide-safety authorities.
First, confirm what you are seeing
Stink bugs are shield-shaped insects. An adult brown marmorated stink bug is about 1/2 inch (13 mm) long, according to Penn State Extension’s 2024 Common Urban Pests guidance. Identification matters because treatment differs for other household insects. If you are unsure, collect one in a container or take a clear photograph for identification through your local extension service.
Indoors, stink bugs are mainly a nuisance. North Carolina Cooperative Extension reported in 2023 that they do not cause significant structural or cosmetic damage and do not reproduce inside the home.
Remove stink bugs already indoors
Vacuum or sweep them up
Use a hand or shop vacuum, or sweep bugs into a container. Empty the vacuum contents into soapy water or discard the vacuum bag promptly. A vacuum can retain the odor released by disturbed stink bugs, so clean the canister and filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions if smell persists.

- Complete Trap Kit - Each Stink Bug Trap kit contains 1 dual action lure and 3 disposable traps. Once a trap is full, simply remove the lure, throw out the trapped bug panel and stick the lure on another sticky trap.
Catch individual bugs without crushing them
Use a cup and a sheet of paper, then drop the insect into soapy water. Avoid crushing stink bugs on walls, curtains, or furniture; their defensive odor can linger.
Use a soapy-water light trap as a supplement
- Put water and dish soap in a roasting pan or similarly broad, shallow container.
- Place it in a dark room.
- Shine a desk lamp toward the pan so the light attracts insects over the soapy surface.
- Dispose of the contents when finished.
This is a low-risk way to collect some bugs, but the Environmental Protection Agency cautions that traps alone do not provide complete control.

Why exclusion prevents the next invasion
Stink bugs often enter through very small openings while seeking shelter. North Carolina Cooperative Extension reported in 2023 that a crack as small as one-sixteenth inch can serve as an entry point. Taylor Campbell, a horticulture extension agent there, describes preventing entry by caulking around windows and door frames as the best control method. Cornell Integrated Pest Management likewise states that “the best treatment is prevention.”
Inspect these entry points
- Window and door frames, thresholds, and trim joints
- Damaged window, door, attic, or gable screens
- Joints in siding, fascia, soffits, and foundation walls
- Openings around utility pipes, cables, vents, and hose connections
- Chimneys, crawlspace entries, and other roof or wall penetrations
- Gaps under exterior doors and around garage doors
Seal and repair
- Use quality silicone or silicone-latex caulk for small cracks and joints.
- Use foam sealant for larger or irregular penetrations, following the product label.
- Install or replace weather stripping and door sweeps.
- Repair or replace torn screens and ensure screened openings close tightly.
- Check the seal around attic, gable, crawlspace, and utility openings.
Clean surfaces and allow them to dry before caulking. Do not seal a vent or other opening that is required for combustion, appliance operation, or building ventilation; use an appropriate screened or mechanically sealed solution instead.

A practical prevention plan before fall congregation
- Walk the exterior. Inspect the foundation, siding transitions, window and door frames, eaves, vents, and service penetrations.
- Close the smallest gaps first. Caulk cracks and use foam where a larger penetration needs filling.
- Fix moving parts. Replace worn weather stripping, add door sweeps, and repair screens so doors and windows shut tightly.
- Reduce sheltered routes. Clear debris and dense vegetation that touches the foundation, while maintaining any clearance required for drainage and ventilation.
- Repeat the inspection seasonally. Recheck caulk, screens, and seals after weather, remodeling, or utility work creates new openings.
Should you spray insecticide inside?
Usually, no. The National Pesticide Information Center, updated January 6, 2026, says that using pesticides indoors to control stink bugs often does not work. Guidance from the University of Connecticut and Iowa State University also does not recommend indoor insecticide sprays for this problem. Spraying can add avoidable exposure, leave residues, and fail to stop insects that enter through unsealed gaps.
Never use an outdoor pesticide indoors, and never exceed a product label’s application site, rate, or re-entry directions. If a product is being considered for any use, read the current label and check local rules.

When an exterior treatment may be justified
If large numbers continue to gather on the outside after exclusion work, ask a licensed pest-control professional whether a carefully timed, exterior-only perimeter treatment is appropriate. Results depend on timing, insect pressure, weather, the building’s construction, and the exact labeled product. A perimeter application may reduce activity but does not guarantee complete elimination, and it should not replace sealing entry points.
| Approach | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Vacuuming or sweeping | Immediate removal of visible indoor bugs | Contents must be emptied promptly; the equipment may retain odor |
| Soapy-water light trap | Low-risk supplemental collection in a dark room | EPA cautions that a trap alone does not provide complete control |
| Caulk, foam, weather stripping, and screens | Long-term exclusion | Requires a thorough inspection and periodic maintenance |
| Indoor insecticide spray | Generally not recommended | Often ineffective and introduces unnecessary exposure concerns |
| Licensed exterior perimeter treatment | Severe, recurring exterior populations | Timing- and label-dependent; not a guarantee |
What to do if bugs keep returning
- They reappear near one window or door: inspect the frame, screen, threshold, and weather stripping from both sides.
- They cluster high on walls or in the attic: check gable vents, soffits, fascia, roof penetrations, and attic access covers.
- They emerge around pipes or cables: seal the annular gap with a suitable sealant without blocking required service access or ventilation.
- Exterior numbers remain high: document where and when they gather, finish exclusion work, and consult a licensed professional about a labeled exterior option.
Do not assume that finding adults indoors means the house has an indoor breeding colony. Cornell Integrated Pest Management reports that brown marmorated stink bug egg clusters contain 20–30 eggs and hatch in 4–5 days, but the insects found sheltering in homes are not reported to reproduce inside the home by North Carolina Cooperative Extension.
