For a small patch of mold on a hard bathroom surface, scrub it with detergent and water, then dry the area completely. The lasting fix is to remove the moisture source: repair leaks, improve ventilation and clean damp areas regularly. Mold on absorbent materials, extensive growth or suspected hidden damage may need professional attention rather than surface cleaning.
How to remove a small patch of bathroom mold
- Fix the moisture problem first. Repair plumbing leaks and address other sources of persistent dampness. Cleaning without correcting the moisture source leaves conditions for mold to return. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calls moisture control the key to mold control: What are the basic mold cleanup steps?
- Protect yourself before cleaning. If you are able to take part in cleanup, wear at least a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator, gloves and goggles that fully protect your eyes. Goggles with open vents do not provide the same eye protection. People with allergies, a weakened immune system, underlying lung disease, asthma or COPD should not clean mold, according to the CDC’s mold cleanup guidance.
- Scrub hard, nonporous surfaces. Use detergent and water to remove mold from surfaces such as tile or other hard finishes. Follow the product label if you use a cleaner, and provide fresh air while cleaning.
- Dry the area completely. Drying matters as much as scrubbing: lingering dampness can support renewed growth.
- Do not cover mold with paint or caulk. Clean and dry the surface first. Paint applied over mold is likely to peel, and covering the stain does not resolve the moisture problem.
Choose the response that fits the material and scale
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Small patch on a hard, nonporous surface | Scrub with detergent and water, then dry completely. |
| Mold on porous or absorbent material | Surface cleaning may not reach mold that has penetrated the material. Moldy ceiling tiles, carpet and similar materials may need to be discarded. |
| Large, hidden or difficult-to-access growth; substantial water damage; or contaminated water | Consider an experienced mold-remediation or water-damage professional. EPA guidance says most cleanup smaller than about 10 square feet can generally be handled by occupants following its recommendations; this is a rule of thumb, not a universal legal limit or a guarantee that a particular job is safe to do yourself. See the EPA’s residential mold cleanup guidance. |
When bleach or mold testing is not the answer
Bleach is not the default solution. The EPA does not recommend biocides such as chlorine bleach as routine mold-cleanup practice. Dead mold can still cause allergic reactions, so the aim is to remove it, not simply kill it. If you use a disinfectant, ventilate the area and exhaust air outdoors. Never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser, warns the CDC.
The CDC also does not recommend mold testing as the first response. If mold is visible, remove it and address the moisture source regardless of the type; testing does not replace cleanup or repair.
How to prevent bathroom mold from coming back
Improve ventilation
Run the bathroom exhaust fan or open a window when mold repeatedly appears in a shower or elsewhere in the bathroom. The EPA says increasing ventilation this way, along with more frequent cleaning, will usually prevent recurrence or at least keep it to a minimum. Make sure the exhaust fan vents outdoors.

Reduce indoor humidity and dry wet materials promptly
The EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity between 30% and 60% to help reduce mold growth. Venting bathrooms outside and increasing ventilation can help. The EPA also advises drying wet building materials and furnishings within 24–48 hours to help prevent mold growth after they get wet. That general timeframe is not a bathroom-specific guarantee.
Keep up with routine cleaning and repairs
- Clean shower and other damp bathroom surfaces more frequently if mold tends to return.
- Fix leaks and other water problems promptly rather than repeatedly treating the visible patch.
- After cleaning, make sure the surface is dry; do not paint or caulk over mold.
When to get professional help
Get an experienced professional’s advice when growth is extensive, concealed in a wall or ceiling, associated with substantial water damage or contaminated water, or beyond what you can manage safely. Surface treatment cannot be relied on to remove mold growing inside porous materials or hidden building assemblies. The roughly 10-square-foot EPA rule of thumb is only one consideration; the affected material, water source and health of people in the home matter too.
