First identify what is failing: a sagging or stuck door, a drawer that binds or sits unevenly, or a file-cabinet lock or latch. Check the cabinet for loose screws, damage, obstructions, and shifted hardware, then find the brand and model and consult its manual before making adjustments. Hinge and runner procedures vary; one manufacturer’s adjustment instructions may not fit another cabinet.
Start with a safe inspection
Empty the affected drawer if you can do so without forcing it, and look for an obstruction, loose fastener, cracked panel, bent hinge, or runner that has shifted. IKEA’s Repairing an IKEA cabinet guide advises: “Tighten any and all screws and hinges.” That is a useful inspection step, not a universal adjustment procedure.
Identify the cabinet’s manufacturer and model before adjusting hardware. Find the product manual or manufacturer support page and use the instructions for the installed hinge, runner, latch, or lock. If you cannot identify the hardware, or see cracks, deformation, or other physical damage, stop rather than experimenting.
If a door sags, rubs, or will not line up
Look for loose hinge screws, bent or cracked hardware, and signs that the cabinet itself has moved. KraftMaid notes that hinge screws can loosen over time and provides brand-specific cabinet adjustment tips. Follow the instructions for your installed hardware; do not guess which screw changes the door’s position.

A door that is out of alignment does not always mean the hinge alone is at fault. If the cabinet appears out of square, the cause may involve installation or cabinet alignment. KraftMaid’s care and cleaning guide addresses cabinet alignment; a hinge adjustment may not correct a structural or installation problem.
If a drawer binds or does not close flush
Check for an item blocking the drawer and look to see whether the drawer or runner has shifted. Drawer fronts and runners vary, so use your cabinet maker’s instructions before changing their settings. KraftMaid’s adjustment guidance is for its own cabinet hardware, not a general procedure for every drawer.

If a kitchen drawer is deformed, broken, or jammed, do not yank it open. LIXIL warns that forcing a damaged drawer can damage the cabinet body and recommends repair; see its damaged-drawer guidance.
If a cabinet door will not open
Identify the make and model before trying to release a catch. A safety catch is one documented cause of a stuck door in a particular TOTO wall-cabinet system. TOTO’s repair guide gives a product-specific release and strike-plate procedure; do not apply it to another cabinet. If its instructions do not resolve the problem, or the hardware appears damaged, contact the manufacturer, installer, or a repair service.

If a file cabinet will not open
A file cabinet may be stuck because of a lock, drawer alignment, or latch issue. HON lists these as possible causes and directs owners to its file-cabinet troubleshooting guidance. If you have lost a key, HON says a replacement may be ordered through HON Accessories or customer support. Avoid forcing the drawer; use the instructions for your model or contact HON.

If a hinge is physically broken or cannot be tightened, it may need replacement. IKEA’s cabinet repair guide recommends carefully removing the hinge and using a suitable spare part with the assembly instructions. Match the replacement to the actual hinge and cabinet; the sources do not establish one universal replacement hinge.

When to stop and get help
- Stop if the cabinet, drawer, or hardware is cracked, bent, deformed, or visibly damaged.
- Do not force a stuck door or damaged drawer, or try a release method intended for a different cabinet.
- Contact the manufacturer or installer when you cannot identify the model or hardware, or when the prescribed steps do not resolve the issue.
- Use a repair professional if the cabinet appears out of square or the problem involves structural damage or installation.
