Check for an obstruction or mechanical fault with the power off, then follow the exact centering procedure in the manual for your make and model. Belt alignment and belt tension are related but separate adjustments; do not use a tension adjustment to mask a binding belt or damaged part.
First, distinguish side drift from slipping underfoot
A belt that moves laterally toward one side needs an alignment check. A belt that pauses, slows, or slides backward under your feet is a different symptom and may involve belt tension or another mechanical issue. Do not keep exercising while either symptom is present.
Check for a mechanical problem before adjusting
Switch the treadmill off and unplug it before inspecting it. Horizon’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking belt alignment and tension, roller rotation, binding or pinching, obstructions, and whether the deck and running belt have appropriate lubrication. If you find an obstruction, binding, grinding, or visible damage, stop and address that issue rather than trying to correct it with an alignment bolt. See Horizon’s troubleshooting guide.
- Look for debris or anything caught near the belt or rollers.
- Check for visible damage to the belt, deck, or rollers.
- Do not power the treadmill back on if the belt binds, a roller does not rotate normally, or you hear grinding.
Center the belt using your treadmill’s manual
Adjustment bolt locations and turning directions are not universal. Use the owner’s manual for your exact treadmill, along with the supplied Allen wrench or the correctly sized tool. The following procedure is an example from a Horizon Fitness owner’s manual, not a general instruction for other brands or models.

Horizon manual example
- With the treadmill running at 1 mph, use a machine marking or part line as the alignment reference. The cited Horizon manual says not to run the belt faster than 1 mph while centering and warns to keep fingers, hair, and clothing away from the moving belt.
- If the belt has moved too far to the right, turn the left adjustment bolt counter-clockwise one-quarter turn, then wait for the belt to respond.
- If the belt has moved too far to the left, turn the left adjustment bolt clockwise one-quarter turn, then wait for the belt to respond.
- Repeat small adjustments and allow time for the belt to respond until it remains centered.
These speed, bolt, and direction details come from the referenced Horizon treadmill owner’s manual. Do not transfer them to a different treadmill without confirming its own instructions.
Adjust tension only if the manual calls for it
Centering and tensioning are distinct. The cited Horizon manual says to center the belt first if it slips because it is too loose, then tension it as needed. Follow your model’s instructions for whether and how to adjust tension; there is no universal number of turns or model-independent test established here. If the belt still slips underfoot after approved adjustment, stop using it and seek diagnosis rather than tightening it repeatedly.

Lubricate only with a product your model permits
Lubrication requirements vary: some treadmills specify silicone, some require a proprietary product, and some belts are self-lubricating or wax-infused and need no routine lubricant. Check the owner’s manual before applying anything. Johnson Fitness explains these differences in its treadmill lubrication guide.
Horizon’s lubrication instructions describe 100% silicone oil for eligible models and require unplugging the machine before loosening rear roller bolts; they are not universal directions. Consult Horizon’s lubrication article only if its guidance applies to your treadmill. Lubrication intervals also vary by brand and model, so use the schedule in your manual rather than adopting another model’s interval.

When to stop and call for service
Contact the treadmill manufacturer’s support team or a qualified repair technician if the belt keeps drifting after small, model-approved adjustments, repeatedly shifts out of alignment, or inspection reveals binding, grinding, an obstruction you cannot safely clear, or damaged components. A faulty roller, deck, or belt needs diagnosis; further adjustment is not a substitute for repair.
