If your refrigerator is making no ice or too little, start with the ice-maker setting, freezer conditions, water supply, filter and bin before resetting or replacing anything. These checks solve common interruptions without guessing at a failed part. Exact controls, temperatures and reset steps vary by refrigerator, so use the model number and owner’s manual for instructions specific to your appliance.
Check the simple causes first
Make sure the ice maker is on
Check the ice maker’s switch, control arm or user-interface setting. Some models let you turn ice production off independently of the refrigerator. If the appliance was recently installed, give it time to cool and begin producing: LG says a new installation can take up to two days to start making ice. That is LG guidance, not a guaranteed wait time for every brand or model.
Check freezer temperature and airflow
A freezer that is too warm, frequent door opening or blocked airflow can slow or stop ice production. Check the temperature setting recommended in your refrigerator’s manual and make sure stored food is not blocking vents. LG advises lowering the freezer temperature when needed; Whirlpool also recommends checking freezer conditions and airflow when troubleshooting a reset.
Check the water supply
Confirm the refrigerator’s water shutoff valve is open and the supply line is connected and not kinked. Inadequate flow can keep the ice maker from filling. If the water dispenser works but the ice maker does not, that observation alone does not identify which component has failed; continue through the checks below rather than assuming the valve or ice maker needs replacement.

Inspect the filter
An old, clogged or incorrectly seated filter can restrict water flow. Check that the filter is installed and locked as the manual specifies. Whirlpool notes that an improperly installed filter can reduce or stop flow. LG recommends replacing its filter after six months of use; that is LG’s general guidance, not a universal interval, so follow the maintenance schedule for your model. After replacing a filter, follow the manual’s instructions for priming or flushing it.
Check the bin and accessible ice path
Make sure the ice bin is correctly positioned and not overfilled, and check for an obstruction in the accessible dispenser path or around the control arm. A frozen inlet tube is another possible cause identified by Whirlpool. Do not remove covers, disassemble components or handle electrical parts while the refrigerator is powered.

Should you reset the ice maker?
A reset may clear a temporary interruption, but the procedure is model-dependent. Use the reset instructions in the owner’s manual or manufacturer support page for your exact refrigerator. Whirlpool describes a reset button on some ice makers and a one-minute refrigerator power cycle for applicable models; neither procedure applies to every refrigerator. If you use a power cycle, follow the model’s instructions for safely disconnecting and restoring power.
If ice production does not resume after the specified reset, return to the underlying checks: temperature and airflow, water supply, filter installation and bin obstruction. A reset is not evidence that a faulty component has been repaired.

When a replacement part or technician may be needed
Possible hardware causes include a water inlet valve or the ice maker assembly, but similar symptoms can also result from temperature, flow or filter problems. Frigidaire Appliance Parts lists those components among potential causes and places assembly replacement later in its model-specific troubleshooting sequence. That guidance is not a universal service procedure.
Before buying a filter, water line, inlet valve or ice maker assembly, find the refrigerator’s exact model number—often on a label inside the fresh-food compartment or around the door opening—and verify compatibility using the manufacturer’s parts lookup. Do not choose a part based only on the brand or on how it looks. The available guidance does not establish a universal part number, price or repair time.
