Clean a kitchen from high surfaces down, working from less-soiled areas to dirtier ones, and leave the floor until last. That way, dust and crumbs loosened as you clean are less likely to land on surfaces you have already finished.
What to gather before you start
Clear dishes, food, and countertop clutter from the areas you plan to clean. Put food away or protect it, then gather a washable microfiber cloth, a broom or vacuum, a mop if appropriate for your flooring, and soap or detergent or a cleaner compatible with your surfaces. Read product labels before use, especially if you plan to sanitize or disinfect.
- Check that each product is suitable for the surface and follow its stated dilution, use, and rinse directions.
- Increase ventilation while diluting and using cleaning products, and afterward.
- Use a stable step stool if you need extra reach; do not overreach from a chair or countertop.
There is no single cleaner that is suitable for every countertop, finish, metal, or appliance. Check the cleaner label and the surface or appliance maker’s care instructions before using a product on a delicate material.
Clean the kitchen in this order
This household route applies the general top-to-bottom principle: finish high surfaces before lower ones, and clean the floor after the work above it. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s toolkit recommends cleaning high surfaces first and gives countertops before floors as an example; it is written for early care and education settings, not as a residential room-by-room checklist. - High ledges and shelves: Dust or wipe reachable cabinet tops, open shelves, the range-hood exterior, and other upper ledges. Work carefully so loosened dust falls onto areas you have not cleaned yet.
- Cabinet fronts and appliance exteriors: Wipe cabinet doors, handles, the refrigerator exterior, and other frequently touched surfaces with a compatible cleaner. Apply cleaner to the microfiber cloth rather than spraying directly onto a hard surface; EPA recommends this approach to reduce rebound mist exposure. Launder reusable microfiber cloths after use.
- Countertops and food-preparation areas: Remove crumbs, then wash with soap or detergent and water or a compatible surface cleaner. If an antimicrobial treatment is warranted, use only a product labeled for that surface and follow its instructions for dilution, wet contact time, and rinsing.
- Sink and lower cabinet fronts: Clean the sink, then lower cabinet doors and toe kicks. Use a clean section of cloth or a freshly rinsed cloth as needed so you do not spread soil from a dirtier area to a cleaner one. Change cleaning water when it looks or feels dirty.
- Floor: Sweep or vacuum loose crumbs and debris, then damp mop using a method suitable for your flooring. Leave this step until the end so debris from higher surfaces does not re-soil a finished floor.
Cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting are different
Cleaning removes dirt and organic matter with soap or detergent. Sanitizing is a chemical process intended to kill bacteria on surfaces; it is not intended to kill viruses. Disinfecting uses chemicals to kill viruses and bacteria on surfaces. These terms are not interchangeable, so choose a product for the purpose you actually need. The EPA explains the distinctions and the role of registered product directions in its guidance on products and surfaces.
For either a sanitizer or disinfectant, clean visible soil first: dirt and debris can interfere with antimicrobial products. Then use the product only on surfaces named on its label and keep the treated area visibly wet for the full labeled contact time. On food-contact surfaces, check the label for whether and how to rinse with potable water; do not assume a general cleaning claim means no rinse is needed. EPA and CDC guidance emphasizes following the product label, including contact time and rinsing directions: EPA/CDC cleaning and disinfecting guidance.

Use cleaners without creating a hazard
- Never mix cleaning products or add bleach to another chemical. The U.S. EPA’s indoor-air guidance says, “NEVER MIX CLEANING PRODUCTS”; mixing can create toxic vapors.
- Follow label dilution directions for concentrates rather than estimating amounts.
- Check surface compatibility before applying a cleaner, and ventilate during use and afterward.
- Use antimicrobial products only when appropriate for the surface and task, and follow every label direction.
How often should you clean?
There is no single residential schedule established by the cited EPA material. Its sample schedule is for early care and education settings, so it should not be treated as a universal household rule. As a limited example of that setting, the toolkit lists food-preparation surfaces as cleaned and sanitized before and after each use, counters as cleaned after use and cleaned and sanitized daily, food-preparation appliances as cleaned after use and daily, and refrigerators as cleaned monthly. A qualifying residential dishwasher that meets NSF/ANSI 184 can achieve a minimum 99.999% reduction of bacteria when operated on its sanitizing cycle, according to the EPA toolkit; that figure does not apply to every dishwasher or cycle.
