How to Clean Vinyl Siding Without Streaks or Damage

A hose and soft-bristle brush are the safest starting points for cleaning vinyl siding. Choose cleaners by stain and label, protect plants and rinse before solutions dry.

Start with a garden hose: rain or a rinse may be enough to remove everyday dirt. For grime that remains, use a soft-bristle, long-handled brush and a cleaner whose label permits use on vinyl siding. Work carefully, protect plants and nearby finishes, and rinse before the cleaner dries. A thorough wash can refresh siding, but it cannot restore faded or damaged material to a like-new condition.

Start with a gentle rinse

Rinse the siding with an ordinary garden hose, working over a small area at a time. The Vinyl Siding Institute (VSI) says rain may clean siding; when it does not, a hose is an appropriate starting point. This avoids using a stronger cleaner when water alone will do.

If dirt remains, use a long-handled car-washing brush with soft bristles, attached to the hose if the brush allows it. VSI cautions that stiff brushes and abrasive cleaners can alter the siding’s gloss and leave splotchy-looking areas. Do not scrub with scouring pads or abrasive powders.

Choose a cleaner for the stain

For ordinary dirt and grime, Lowe’s painting-preparation guide recommends dish soap and water or a cleaner labeled for vinyl siding. A siding-labeled cleaner is optional; a hose and soft brush may be sufficient. Follow the label for dilution, application, dwell time, compatible surfaces and rinsing. Do not mix cleaning products or combine bleach with other cleaners.

For mildew or mold

Cleaning advice varies by source and product. In its painting-preparation guidance, Lowe’s describes a mixture of 70% water and 30% white vinegar for mildew. VSI’s 2020 installation manual lists a different option in its stain chart, and its general mildew formula adds 1 quart of liquid laundry bleach to the detergent-and-cleaner mixture below. These are source-specific directions, not a universal recipe: check the siding manufacturer’s care instructions and the cleaner label first, and consider nearby plants and finishes before using bleach.

For soot and grime

VSI’s 2020 manual gives this mixture for soot and grime: 1/3 cup powdered detergent plus 2/3 cup powdered household cleaner in 1 gallon of water. The manual notes that product names in its stain guidance are illustrative and does not endorse particular products or processes. Check the ingredients and instructions on any cleaner you use, and do not substitute a product that is not suitable for vinyl.

Optional siding cleaners

The Home Depot listing for Simple Green House and Siding Cleaner says it is suitable for vinyl and aluminum siding and can be applied manually or with pressure-washing systems; its directions call for rinsing before the solution dries. The listing for Mold Armor E-Z House Wash describes a bleach-based formula and directs users to wet nearby plants before and after use; it also says not to apply it with a high-power pressure cleaner. These examples show why the package label matters. Product availability and directions can change, so verify the current label before use.

Wash in a way that limits streaks and protects the surroundings

  1. Check the instructions. Read the siding manufacturer’s care guidance and the cleaner label. Test an inconspicuous area first if you are unsure how the surface will respond.
  2. Protect plants and nearby surfaces. Move or cover vulnerable items where practical. Wet shrubs before applying cleaner and rinse them afterward if the product directions call for it; VSI also cautions against direct cleaner contact with shrubs. Take care around painted trim, metals and other finishes.
  3. Keep the work area manageable. Apply cleaner only to an area you can rinse before it dries. Lowe’s painting-preparation guide says to keep the cleaner wet, allow five to ten minutes, then rinse; use that timing only when it matches the product’s label.
  4. Brush gently, then rinse thoroughly. Use a soft-bristle brush for residue that does not come off with a rinse. Direct rinse water so cleaner and loosened grime are carried away rather than left to dry on the siding.

VSI’s 2020 manual advises starting at the bottom of the house and washing upward to prevent streaking. Follow that sequence if using its guidance, while keeping each section wet and rinsing fully according to the cleaner directions.

Use pressure washing cautiously

There is no single pressure-washer setting established as safe for every vinyl siding product and cleaning solution. VSI emphasizes a garden hose and soft brush. By contrast, The Home Depot’s house-washing guide says vinyl siding can withstand a 2,500–3,000 psi gas pressure washer, while the Mold Armor E-Z House Wash listing warns against using that cleaner with a high-power pressure cleaner. These instructions address different products and contexts, so the retailer’s pressure range should not be treated as a universal setting.

Before using a pressure washer, check the siding manufacturer’s care instructions, the washer manual and the cleaner label. Follow the most restrictive applicable directions, use a cautious application, and do not use pressure-washer equipment with a product whose label prohibits it. If those instructions do not clearly permit pressure washing, stick to a hose and soft brush.

When a wash will not make siding look new

Washing can remove surface dirt and some organic growth, but it cannot reverse fading, discoloration, cracking or other material damage. If a clean, dry area still looks uneven after gentle cleaning, avoid escalating to abrasive scrubbing or an unapproved chemical mixture; the remaining appearance may not be removable dirt. Consult the siding manufacturer or a qualified siding professional about the surface condition.
