For routine cleaning, use warm water with a little mild dish soap and a clean, soft microfiber cloth. Wipe in the direction of the visible grain, then dry and buff with a second clean cloth. Check your appliance manual first: fingerprint-resistant, black stainless and other coated finishes may require different care, and a stainless steel polish is not safe for every surface.
What you need
- Two clean, soft microfiber cloths: one for washing and one for drying and buffing.
- Warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap for routine grime.
- A finish-compatible stainless steel cleaner only if the manual permits it and soap and water are not enough.
How to clean stainless steel without streaks
- Check the appliance manual and finish. Confirm whether the surface is traditional stainless steel, fingerprint-resistant stainless, black stainless or another coating. Manufacturer advice can differ by finish. Whirlpool advises checking the owner’s manual; GE says its fingerprint-resistant finish does not need special cleaner and warns against stainless steel cleaners on it. Whirlpool’s stainless-steel cleaning guide and GE’s fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel guidance provide finish-specific instructions.
- Remove loose residue. Dampen a clean microfiber cloth with warm water. For greasy fingerprints or food residue, use mild dish soap diluted in water. GE recommends this approach for routine cleaning, and Whirlpool’s general guidance starts with a warm-water-dampened microfiber cloth.
- Wipe with the grain. Look for the fine, visible brush lines on the surface and move the cloth in that direction. Grain may run horizontally or vertically. Wiping across it can leave visible marks; Whirlpool specifically recommends following the grain to help avoid streaks.
- Rinse away soap residue. If you used soapy water, wipe the surface again with a clean cloth dampened with plain water. Avoid leaving cleaner or soap on the finish.
- Dry and buff immediately. Use your second clean, soft cloth and follow the grain. Drying helps prevent water marks and streaks; Whirlpool notes that water left to dry on some finishes can cause discoloration.
Choose between soap and water or a specialty cleaner
For ordinary fingerprints, light grease and food smudges, mild dish soap and water are the sensible starting point. A specialty stainless steel cleaner is optional, not a universal requirement. Use one only when the appliance manual allows it for that exact finish, follow the product label, and buff with a clean cloth if the surface looks cloudy or streaky afterward.
| Cleaning approach | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Mild dish soap and warm water | Routine fingerprints, grease and everyday residue | Use a soft cloth, wipe with the grain, rinse away residue and dry. GE and Whirlpool support this gentle baseline in their stainless-steel care guidance. |
| Finish-compatible stainless steel cleaner | Traditional stainless steel when the manual permits a specialty product | Confirm the exact finish and product directions first. GE advises against stainless steel cleaner on its fingerprint-resistant finish. |
How to handle stubborn stains
Do not jump to a harsher cleaner or scrubber. First check the manual for the appliance’s finish and permitted products. GE describes a baking-soda-and-water paste for heavy soils and a liquid oxalic-acid cleanser for rust, tarnish or small blemishes, applied with a damp, soft sponge along the grain. Whirlpool also gives a baking-soda paste method for some stains. These are targeted treatments, not routine cleaning steps: follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific model and the cleaner’s label.
Products and methods to avoid
Do not use steel wool, steel brushes or abrasive pads; they can scratch the finish. Avoid assuming a cleaner is safe simply because it works on another stainless steel appliance. Manufacturer restrictions vary by surface: GE’s guidance for general stainless steel warns against bleach, ammonia, acids, abrasives and commercial oven cleaner, while its fingerprint-resistant guidance also rules out vinegar or acidic cleaners, ammonia, bleach, stainless steel cleaner, abrasive cloths and paper towels. Whirlpool gives additional finish-specific cautions, including against some vinegar-, citrus- and ammonia-based cleaners. Consult the manual before trying vinegar, polish, oil or any specialty product.
