Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you own an LG washing machine and your laundry is coming out with a sour, musty, or stale smell, the best tub cleaner is usually not a special LG-branded chemical. The better answer is this: use a washer-safe cleaner that matches LG’s Tub Clean instructions, run it in an empty washer every month, then wipe and dry the gasket, door glass, and dispenser area afterward.
For most homeowners, a mainstream cleaner such as Affresh, Tide Washing Machine Cleaner, ACTiVE, Glisten, Plink, Washer Fresh, an EPA Safer Choice-labeled washer cleaner, or liquid chlorine bleach will do the job when used correctly. The mistake we see is homeowners chasing stronger products when the real issue is trapped moisture, too much detergent, a dirty gasket fold, a clogged drain pump filter, or a laundry drain that was not installed correctly.
On our construction and remodel projects, laundry rooms are one of the most common places where small maintenance habits and small installation details turn into odor, water damage, or service calls. A $12 box of cleaner can solve normal tub residue. It cannot fix a dry trap, a blocked standpipe, an over-inserted drain hose, a leaking washer box, or a room with no way to dry out.
Best Overall Answer: Use a Washer-Safe Cleaner With LG’s Tub Clean Cycle
LG’s support guidance is straightforward: clean the tub monthly, run the Tub Clean cycle with the washer empty, place tablets directly in the tub, place powdered cleaner in the main wash detergent compartment after removing the liquid detergent cup or tray, and place liquid bleach in the bleach compartment. Afterward, wipe the door and inside door seal and leave the door slightly open so the tub can dry.
That means the best cleaner is the one you will use correctly and consistently. In a typical household, monthly cleaning costs about $10 to $50 per year depending on the cleaner. That is cheaper than one appliance service call, which can easily land around $170 on average before parts if the problem is diagnosed as a washer issue.

Here is the practical ranking we would give a homeowner with an LG front-load or top-load washer:
- Best everyday choice: washer cleaner tablets such as Affresh, ACTiVE, or similar oxygen-based tablets.
- Best for strong detergent odor: powdered or packet-style cleaner such as Tide Washing Machine Cleaner, used as directed.
- Best for scale and mixed residue: a liquid washer cleaner such as Glisten, especially in hard-water areas.
- Best low-cost option: liquid chlorine bleach used only according to the washer manual and never mixed with other cleaners.
- Best environmentally conscious filter: look for an EPA Safer Choice-labeled washer cleaner in the EPA product database.
If your LG washer smells bad once, run Tub Clean once. If the odor comes back quickly, LG’s escalation is to run Tub Clean twice, then run it once weekly for three consecutive weeks. If the smell still returns immediately after that, stop buying stronger cleaner and inspect the gasket, dispenser, drain pump filter, drain hose, standpipe, trap, and room humidity.
Washer Cleaner Options and 2026 Costs
Most washer cleaners are inexpensive. The spread comes from package size, formula type, brand, and whether the product is a tablet, powder, packet, gel, or liquid. Homeowners usually overthink the brand and underthink the cost per cycle.

| Cleaner Type | Typical 2026 Retail Cost | Approx. Cost Per Cleaning | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Affresh tablets | About $6.98 for 3 count or $11.98 for 6 pack | About $2.00 to $2.33 | Monthly maintenance and general odor control |
| Tide washer cleaner | About $11.97 for 5 or 6 count | About $2.00 to $2.39 | Strong detergent and laundry residue odors |
| ACTiVE tablets | About $9.98 for 12 tablets | About $0.83 | Budget monthly cleaning |
| Glisten liquid cleaner | About $24.17 for 6 pack | About $4.03 | Liquid cleaning, residue, and mineral scale concerns |
| Plink tablets | About $47.30 for 12 pack | About $3.94 | Convenient tablet cleaning at higher per-use cost |
| Liquid chlorine bleach | Often under $1 to $3 per cleaning | Usually under $1 to $3 | Low-cost cleaning when allowed by the washer manual |
For a normal family washer, plan on one cleaning per month. That is 12 cycles per year. A bulk tablet pack at around $0.83 per cleaning can cost about $10 per year. A higher-cost liquid or specialty cleaner at about $4 per cycle can cost closer to $48 per year. Either way, cleaner cost is rarely the expensive part of laundry maintenance.
The expensive part is ignoring installation or moisture problems. A basic washing machine installation with existing hookups can run about $50 to $175. Once the laundry area needs plumbing, electrical work, wall access, floor leveling, a new washer box, shutoff replacement, or drain correction, total costs can climb much higher, with complex work reaching up to $2,000. That is why we treat recurring washer odor as a maintenance issue first, then an installation issue if cleaning does not hold.
How to Run Tub Clean on an LG Washer Correctly
The LG Tub Clean cycle is designed to clean the tub, not your laundry. The washer should be empty. Do not add clothes, towels, rags, detergent, scent boosters, or fabric softener. Give the cleaner water, heat, agitation, and time to work against the tub surfaces.
Step-by-Step Tub Clean Routine
- Remove all laundry from the washer.
- Choose one cleaner only: tablet, powder, liquid cleaner, or liquid chlorine bleach if allowed by the manual.
- Put tablets directly in the empty washer tub.
- Put powdered cleaner in the main wash detergent compartment after removing the liquid detergent cup or tray.
- Put liquid bleach in the bleach compartment, following LG’s and the bleach label’s amount limits.
- Select Tub Clean and start the cycle.
- When the cycle ends, wipe the inside door glass, drum lip, and gasket folds with a microfiber cloth.
- Pull the gasket fold back gently and dry the low spots where water collects.
- Leave the door slightly ajar so the tub can dry.
- Open or remove the detergent dispenser drawer so it can dry too.
Most Tub Clean cycles take roughly 1 to 2 hours depending on the washer model, water temperature, and cycle programming. Do it when the washer can sit empty afterward. Running Tub Clean at 11 p.m. and then closing the door wet defeats half the point.

Do Not Mix Cleaners
Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, acidic descalers, toilet cleaner, drain cleaner, or other household cleaners. That can produce dangerous fumes. If you used one cleaner and want to switch to another, run a rinse cycle or wait until the Tub Clean cycle is fully complete and the washer is wiped out.
Abrasive pads are another bad idea. They can scratch door glass, damage stainless surfaces, and rough up the gasket so it holds more residue later. Use microfiber cloths, a soft brush for the dispenser, and patience.
Why LG Front-Load Washers Smell More Often
Front-load washers are efficient because they use less water and tumble clothes through the wash. The tradeoff is that the door gasket must seal tightly. That rubber gasket has folds, low spots, and drain holes where water, lint, hair, detergent film, body oil, pet hair, and soil can collect. Add a closed door and a humid laundry room, and odor develops quickly.
Top-load LG washers can smell too, but the problem is more common in front-load models because the door seal traps moisture. The cleaning tablet can reach hidden tub surfaces, but it will not magically scrub black staining out of a rubber fold. For visible gasket staining, pair Tub Clean with manual gasket cleaning.
On job sites, the worst washers are usually not abused. They are used heavily. Work clothes, towels, pet bedding, cloth diapers, kitchen rags, and sports uniforms bring in more soil than normal office clothing. A washer handling high-soil loads may need Tub Clean every 2 to 3 weeks instead of monthly.
Cleaner Alone Will Not Fix These Problems
If the washer smells better for a week and then turns sour again, start looking beyond the stainless tub. These are the areas we check first in a laundry room walkthrough.
Too Much HE Detergent
HE detergent is concentrated. The cap line is not always the right amount. In soft water, with small loads, or with lightly soiled clothing, the washer may need far less than the cap suggests. Excess detergent leaves film behind. That film feeds odor and creates suds that can interfere with drainage.

Use HE detergent only, measure it, and reduce the amount if you see suds in the rinse or feel slick residue on washed clothing. For many normal loads, 1 to 2 tablespoons of concentrated liquid detergent is enough, though the exact amount depends on soil level, water hardness, and product strength.

Dirty Dispenser Drawer
Fabric softener and detergent residue can create odor outside the tub. Remove the drawer if your model allows it, rinse it with warm water, scrub corners with a soft brush, and wipe the drawer cavity. Let it dry before closing it. If you use liquid fabric softener every load, expect to clean this area more often.
Drain Pump Filter
Many LG front-load washers have a small drain pump filter behind a lower access panel. It can collect lint, coins, hair, collar stays, small screws, and sludge. A dirty filter can cause odor, slow draining, and error codes. Before opening it, place a shallow pan and towels under the drain tube because water will come out.
Check the manual for your specific model. If the washer is on a pedestal or in a tight closet, access can be awkward. This is one reason we design laundry rooms with service clearance instead of pushing machines tight into finished trim.
Closed Door and Wet Gasket
After regular washes, wipe the door and gasket and leave the door slightly ajar. You do not need it wide open in the middle of a hallway. Even a few inches of air gap helps. If you have children or pets, use the washer’s magnetic door prop accessory or a safe aftermarket prop that keeps the door from latching while still limiting access.

A washer that smells musty is usually a cleaning and moisture issue. A washer that smells like sewer gas, backs up, drains slowly, leaks, or overflows into the standpipe may have a plumbing or installation problem.
In a properly built laundry area, the washer drain needs the right standpipe, trap, venting, hose position, and access. Modern plumbing standards commonly call for a 2-inch clothes washer standpipe and trap arrangement. The standpipe must be tall enough to prevent overflow but not so tall or so tightly sealed that it siphons or traps sewer gas. Many jurisdictions require the laundry standpipe to be within a specific height range, often roughly 18 to 42 inches above the trap weir depending on adopted code and local amendments.

- Washing machine cleaner tablets: Oxygen-based formula breaks down residue and buildup in the drum, pump, valves, and hoses
- Washing machine cleaning tablets: Descaling action removes limescale and mineral deposits left behind by hard water
- Washer machine cleaner tablets: Targeted formula breaks down trapped residue that causes musty washing machine smells
- Front load washer cleaner tablets: Compatible with HE, front load, and top loader washing machines
- Wash machine cleaner: Drop one tablet into the empty drum and run a normal or hot cycle; septic safe
Drain hose insertion depth matters. If the hose is shoved too far down the standpipe, it can contribute to siphoning or poor drainage. If the hose is barely inserted, it can pop out and flood the room. The hose should be secured without making the standpipe airtight.
Electrical safety matters too. Laundry areas commonly require GFCI protection, and many modern installations also involve AFCI requirements depending on the circuit and local code adoption. A washer receptacle should be accessible, properly grounded, and not overloaded with extension cords or improvised adapters.
Recommended Free Tools
For upper-floor laundry rooms, we like to see a level floor, accessible shutoffs, braided stainless supply hoses or high-quality reinforced hoses, a drain pan where appropriate, a leak sensor, and enough service clearance to pull the machine without destroying trim. These details are not glamorous, but they prevent the kind of damage that makes a $12 cleaner irrelevant.
When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
Most LG washer odor issues are DIY maintenance. A homeowner can run Tub Clean, wipe the gasket, clean the dispenser, measure detergent, and inspect the drain pump filter with basic supplies. The total annual DIY cost is usually about $10 to $50 for cleaner, plus a few microfiber cloths and maybe a shallow pan for filter cleaning.
DIY If the Problem Looks Like Normal Washer Residue
- The odor is musty or sour, not sewer-like.
- The washer drains normally.
- There is no water on the floor.
- The smell improves after Tub Clean.
- The gasket has light residue but no torn rubber.
- The dispenser drawer has visible detergent or softener buildup.
In that situation, clean the washer monthly, wipe the gasket after cycles, reduce detergent, and clean the dispenser every 1 to 2 months. For heavy-use households, add an extra Tub Clean after pet bedding, construction work clothes, diapers, towels, or muddy loads.
Hire a Pro If the Smell Points to Drainage, Leaks, or Code Issues
- The odor smells like sewer gas.
- Water backs up from the standpipe.
- The washer drains slowly or throws drain errors.
- You see water stains, soft flooring, swollen baseboard, or mold at the wall.
- The drain hose is kinked, crushed, sealed airtight, or inserted too deeply.
- The washer is not level and walks during spin.
- The shutoff valves are corroded, frozen, or leaking.
- The laundry room lacks proper GFCI-protected receptacles.
A basic appliance hookup may be a $50 to $175 task when water, drain, and electrical are already correct. If a plumber or electrician needs to open walls, replace old galvanized or cast-iron piping, add a 2-inch standpipe, correct venting, install a washer box, update electrical protection, or repair water damage, the job can move into the hundreds or even approach $2,000 in complex conditions.

For a normal household, use this schedule:
| Task | Frequency | Time Needed | Typical Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run LG Tub Clean with washer cleaner | Monthly | 1 to 2 hours cycle time | About $0.83 to $4 per cycle |
| Wipe door glass and gasket | After wash days | 1 to 2 minutes | Microfiber cloth only |
| Leave door and dispenser ajar | After each use | Immediate | No cost |
| Clean dispenser drawer | Every 1 to 2 months | 10 minutes | No cost or mild soap |
| Check drain pump filter | Every 1 to 3 months, or if odor/drain issues appear | 10 to 20 minutes | No cost |
| Inspect hoses, valves, pan, and floor | Every 6 months | 10 minutes | No cost unless repairs are needed |
For high-soil households, tighten the schedule. If someone works construction, landscaping, auto repair, food service, or healthcare, the washer may need extra cleaning. The same goes for families washing pet bedding, gym clothes, towels, cloth diapers, or heavily soiled kids’ clothing.

The Bottom Line
The best LG washing machine tub cleaner is not one magic product. It is a correct routine: a washer-safe cleaner, an empty Tub Clean cycle, monthly consistency, manual gasket wiping, a dry door seal, a clean dispenser, and a drain system that is built correctly.
If you want the simplest purchase, buy a common washer cleaner tablet and use it monthly. If you want the lowest cost, use bleach only if your LG manual allows it and never mix it with other cleaners. If you want the most responsible filter, look for an EPA Safer Choice-labeled product. If the washer smells like sewer gas or backs up into the drain, stop treating it like a cleaning problem and inspect the laundry plumbing.
A clean washer should leave clothes smelling like clean fabric, not perfume covering up mildew. When the machine, drain, room ventilation, and daily habits all work together, LG’s Tub Clean cycle is usually enough to keep it that way.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best cleaner for an LG washing machine Tub Clean cycle?
For most LG washers, the best choice is a washer-safe tablet, powder, or liquid cleaner used exactly with the Tub Clean cycle. Affresh, Tide, ACTiVE, Glisten, Plink, Washer Fresh, and EPA Safer Choice-labeled cleaners are common options. LG’s guidance does not require a proprietary LG-branded cleaner.
Can I use Affresh in an LG washing machine?
Yes, Affresh washer cleaner tablets are commonly used in LG washers. Place the tablet directly in the empty tub, not in the dispenser drawer, then run the Tub Clean cycle.
How often should I run Tub Clean on an LG washer?
LG recommends monthly tub cleaning. If odor recurs, LG recommends running Tub Clean twice, then once weekly for three consecutive weeks before assuming the washer has a larger problem.
Can I use bleach instead of washing machine cleaner?
Liquid chlorine bleach can be used if your LG washer manual allows it. Put it in the bleach compartment and never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, acidic cleaners, or other chemicals.
Why does my LG front-load washer still smell after Tub Clean?
Common causes include water trapped in the gasket, too much HE detergent, a dirty dispenser drawer, a clogged drain pump filter, or a laundry drain issue. If the odor smells like sewer gas or the washer drains slowly, inspect the plumbing and installation.
When is washer odor a plumbing problem instead of a cleaning problem?
Suspect plumbing if the smell is sewer-like, the standpipe backs up, the washer drains slowly, the drain hose is inserted too deeply, the trap is dry, or there are leaks around the laundry wall or floor.
