Choose a cordless circular saw by starting with the thickest material and cuts you expect to make—not by choosing a voltage or blade size first. Confirm the saw’s cut depth at 90 degrees and at the bevel angles you use, then compare blade compatibility, battery fit, handling, safety features, and total kit cost.
Start with the cuts you need to make
List the materials you cut, their maximum thickness, whether you mostly rip or crosscut, and how often bevel cuts are part of the work. That gives you a practical basis for judging capacity and the pace of work. A saw that cannot make your required cut is the wrong size, regardless of its other features.
- Identify the thickest stock you expect to cut.
- Include routine bevel cuts, not just straight cuts at 90 degrees.
- Consider the material and cut type when evaluating the blade and the saw’s performance.
Check blade size and cut capacity
Blade diameter determines which blades fit and constrains the saw’s cutting capacity. Check the manufacturer’s stated maximum cut depth at 90 degrees and at the bevel settings you expect to use. Also confirm blade diameter, arbor, and permitted blade types in the product manual. Do not fit an oversize blade.
A larger blade may provide more cut capacity, but tool size and handling matter too. Compare current product specifications and, where available, bare-tool weight and how the saw feels in your hands rather than assuming every saw of a given diameter handles the same way.

As one specification example—not a current recommendation—the manufacturer lists a 2-1/2-inch cut depth for its 7-1/4-inch Milwaukee M18 FUEL 2732-20 circular saw. Milwaukee’s page marks that model no longer available: Milwaukee M18 FUEL 7-1/4-inch Circular Saw 2732-20.
Match power to the material and workload
Think about power in terms of what you cut, how thick it is, the cut type, and how quickly or frequently you need to work. Compare manufacturer specifications and independent tests only when the tests use comparable conditions. Voltage alone is not a reliable measure of cutting power or runtime, and the available sources do not establish a universal performance ranking for cordless saws.

Manufacturer performance language is a claim from that maker, not an independent test result. For a fair comparison, look for task-relevant evidence and note the material, blade, battery, and test conditions behind it.
Check battery compatibility and kit contents
If you already own cordless tools, a compatible battery platform may let you use batteries and a charger you have. Confirm compatibility on the manufacturer’s current product listing and in the manual; battery fit should not be assumed across product lines or generations.

Compare tool-only and complete-kit listings. Check whether the kit includes a battery and charger, the battery capacity, and whether that setup suits the amount of work you expect between charges. A runtime or cuts-per-charge figure is useful only when it is tied to a specific saw and battery, with test conditions stated. Do not treat a figure for one model as a promise for another.
Compare handling, features, and total cost
Once a saw meets your cut requirements, compare the details that affect daily use and ownership. Review the current manufacturer listing and manual for:

Compare price for the package you will actually use. A tool-only price is not directly comparable to a kit price that includes a battery and charger. No universal best size or independent model ranking is established by the cited sources; the better choice depends on task fit, capacity, battery ecosystem, handling, and safety.

Inspect the upper and retracting lower blade guards and make sure they move and return as intended. OSHA’s general-industry rule for covered portable circular saws with blade diameters greater than 2 inches requires guarding above and below the shoe; it says, “When the tool is withdrawn from the work, the lower guard shall automatically and instantly return to covering position” (29 CFR 1910.243(a)(1)(i)). Keep guards functional and follow the saw’s manual; do not remove a guard for ordinary use. Workplace requirements may differ from home-use guidance.

OSHA’s handheld-saw guidance identifies blade contact as a hazard and advises using the proper blade for the material, maintaining sharp blades, wearing eye and face protection, and directing the blade away from aisles and nearby people. Its woodworking guidance notes that incorrect blade height and poor maintenance can contribute to kickback, and that ripping is more prone to kickback than crosscutting. Before use, follow the exact tool manual and applicable workplace rules. Secure and support the stock, keep hands clear of the cut line, inspect the blade and guard, and wait for the blade to stop before setting the saw down.
