A scary ticket booth can be built as a hinged reclaimed-wood prop or as a lighter frame covered with fabric. Choose based on whether you need a solid, weathered carnival look or a portable façade, then size it for your site and intended use. The measurements below are examples from a published project, not a certified plan.
Choose a design for your space and use

Before choosing, consider available materials, how often you will move or store the booth, the look you want, and whether someone will stand inside it. For a façade-only prop, a lightweight frame may be enough; a person-sized booth needs careful planning for access and headroom.
Plan the footprint and headroom
Start by measuring the intended location, including clearance around the booth and the space needed for a person or prop. In Keith Corcoran’s Make: project, the example uses 30-inch-wide sides and 42-inch lower panels. The roof panel is at least 34 inches in both dimensions to create an approximately two-inch overhang. An overhead sign adds roughly 10–12 inches to the overall height. These are project-specific examples, not universal dimensions; adapt them to your boards, occupant and location. Make: Magazine’s Scary Ticket Booth Build explicitly says it is not a to-the-inch guide.
Build the hinged reclaimed-wood version
Corcoran describes the project as a freestyle, design-as-you-build build rather than a fixed set of plans. Make: estimates 4–8 hours, assuming hard work and possibly a helper; that is the author’s estimate, not a guaranteed build time. Basic carpentry familiarity is helpful but not essential.

Gather the materials and tools
- Reclaimed pallet boards or dog-ear fence boards
- Hinges for the side panels and back door, plus removable hinge pins for the roof
- Nails or screws suited to the stock you are using
- Hammer, pry bar or crowbar, saw, measuring tape and screw gun or drill
- Optional: jigsaw for a shaped sign, pneumatic nailer and compressor, and a boring bit if fitting bars through the frame
Inspect reclaimed boards before use. Pallet dismantling can expose splinters and rusty nails, so wear gloves. Reclaimed pallet wood can split when screws are driven without a pilot hole; predrill where needed. Remove, cover or safely position protruding fasteners.
Assemble the panels and roof
- Salvage and sort the boards. Dismantle pallets with a pry bar or crowbar, then select sound boards and account for their actual widths and lengths before cutting.
- Make four lower side panels. Build each from horizontal and vertical border pieces, adapting the example dimensions to the stock and footprint you planned.
- Frame the upper window. Add upper posts above the lower panels. Bars are optional; if you add them, fit them securely through the frame.
- Build the back door. Assemble a panel that fits the opening and leaves the access you need.
- Hinge the booth together. Join the side panels to the front and attach the back door to the sides so the sections can fold.
- Make and attach the roof. Size it for the overhang you want. Removable hinge pins allow the roof to come off for storage.
- Check the finished structure. Set it on its intended surface, confirm the panels and roof are secure, and address any sharp edges or protruding hardware.
The hinged panels and removable roof make this example easier to fold or disassemble for storage. The project does not provide structural engineering or a certified load rating, so do not treat it as a rated shelter or platform.

Build the fabric-panel alternative
Euclid Boo’s alternative uses a lightweight three-panel frame covered with fabric and joined to form a booth, with a front counter. Its listed supplies include 2×2 boards, sheets, a staple gun, hardware cloth, screws, carriage bolts, washers, nuts, mending plates and a diluted latex-paint wash. This approach trades the solid-board appearance for lighter panels that are easier to move. The maker noted that tying or weighting might be needed in high winds, but the build has no stated wind rating. Euclid Boo’s ticket booth construction example shows this distinct approach.
Add the haunted-carnival finish
For a weathered surface, the Make: project suggests a watered-down latex-paint wash or stain, wiped back while wet. Fabric curtains and hand-painted lettering can complete the booth. An optional sign can be cut from plywood with a jigsaw, lettered using a printed template and fitted with a string of lights. Plan sign dimensions and wiring together if you want to conceal the wiring.

Use lighting components and placement appropriate to the setting, and keep lights away from combustible materials where applicable safety rules require it. Texas State Fire Marshal guidance for haunted houses says, “Locations that use theatrical, spot, or area lighting should be clear of combustible materials.” That guidance is Texas-specific; check rules that apply where your attraction operates. For a yard decoration or private prop, secure the booth against foreseeable tipping, keep walkways clear and deal with exposed fasteners. These are prudent project precautions, not a tested installation specification. A lightweight fabric booth may need additional tying or weight, particularly where wind is a concern.

If the booth is part of an operating haunted attraction, do not treat a DIY build as code approval. The Texas guidance addresses subjects including emergency lighting and effects, exit and evacuation routes, props, and lighting near combustible materials. It applies to Texas; requirements elsewhere depend on the local authority and event setup. Consult the relevant fire and building authorities before opening to the public.
