It is not a ready-to-run appliance: the kit calls for substantial mechanical assembly, wiring, software setup, and tramming, and the manufacturer’s 0.01 mm positioning figure is conditional rather than a guaranteed finished-part tolerance. It may suit a small shop that wants a configurable mill and is prepared to commission it; buyers who need predictable setup time or verified accuracy should weigh those limits carefully.
What the DMC2 Mini is—and what its specifications mean
Shariff describes the DMC2 Mini as a benchtop CNC mill. Its published dimensions and performance figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. The working envelope is the space available for tool movement, not a promise that every fixture or workpiece will fit within those dimensions.
| Specification | Shariff’s published figure |
|---|---|
| X, Y, and Z travel | 12 × 7 × 5.5 inches |
| Maximum table-to-spindle height | 6.25 inches |
| Overall size | Approximately 20 × 20 × 27 inches, plus about 3 inches for motors |
| Weight | Approximately 110 lb without accessories |
| Rapid speed | Up to 10,000 mm/min (400 in/min) |
| Listed resolution | 0.01 mm |
| Spindle | 3 hp (2.2 kW), 24,000 rpm, built-in ER20 collet |
| Power input | 120 V AC at 60 Hz or 220 V AC at 50/60 Hz, according to the technical page |
See Shariff’s DMC2 Mini technical specifications for the maker’s full figures. Rapid speed is a travel specification; it should not be confused with a recommended cutting feed for a particular cutter and material.
Is the DMC2 Mini accurate?
Shariff says the closed-loop stepper motors are capable of 0.01 mm positional accuracy if the axes are assembled correctly, but explicitly does not guarantee that figure because the machine is sold as a kit. The same technical page says a well-built machine can produce final part tolerances within or below 0.01 mm after roughing and careful finishing passes. That is a conditional manufacturer claim, not an independent test result or an out-of-box accuracy guarantee.

Make reviewer Sam Freeman describes tramming—the process of aligning the spindle to the table—as difficult for the review team. After several hours, the spindle was still reported to be more than a degree out, and the team faced the aluminum bed to compensate for X-axis non-levelness. This is one team’s setup account, not a measurement of every DMC2 Mini, but it illustrates why the machine’s practical accuracy depends on assembly, alignment, and machining procedure. Read Make’s February 5, 2026 review for the reported experience.
Kit or assembled: what are you taking on?
Shariff’s product listing displays a $2,500–$4,500 USD range across kit/assembled and voltage choices; this is the listing checked October 4, 2026, and prices or availability can change. The page estimates 20 hours to build the kit. Make’s Sam Freeman reports that two reviewers spent over 40 hours assembling their kit. Those are different estimates: the latter is one review team’s experience, not a prediction for every buyer.
Freeman characterized the kit plainly: “Putting together a DMC2 Mini kit is building one from scratch. Every bit of assembly is on you.” The review describes more than 200 nuts and bolts, a 270-plus-page instruction set, and fasteners that were awkward to reach. The team found much of the work straightforward but tedious; unclear wire descriptions and a loose connection initially prevented Z-axis movement.

The product page says the kit ships in five smaller boxes, requires basic hand tools such as wrenches, Allen keys, and sockets, and includes electronics and wiring, coolant and lubrication systems, a 15-piece collet set, and collet wrenches. It excludes a computer and fluids. The assembled version ships in a crate, according to the listing. Compare the current options and included items on Shariff’s DMC2 Mini product page; the listed range is not a shipping quote or a guarantee of stock.

Plan shop power before ordering. Shariff’s technical page specifies 120 V AC, 60 Hz or 220 V AC, 50/60 Hz, while the product page labels its choices 110 V and 220 V. Because the labels differ, confirm the exact required supply and selected configuration with Shariff rather than assuming the options are interchangeable.
The supplied controller board and configuration files are for Mach3, according to Shariff. The maker says the board can be replaced with a controller that outputs standard step, direction, and enable signals. You will also need CAM software to create G-code. Shariff gives Autodesk Fusion 360 as an example; Make reports that the company provides a machine profile, tool libraries, and training videos for Fusion 360. No minimum computer specifications are stated on the product page, so confirm that any computer you plan to use can run your chosen CAM and control setup.

What materials can it cut, and what tooling is needed?
Shariff advertises the mill for plastics, aluminum, mild steel, tool steel, stainless steel, and titanium. That is a manufacturer capability claim, not evidence that these materials are equally easy, fast, or economical to machine. Make reports an aluminum cut and a steel mold demonstration, but does not independently test every material on the advertised list.
Cutting results depend on the specific operation, workholding, cutter, and feeds and speeds. In one aluminum operation, the Make team used conservative speeds and feeds for beginners; the cutter broke after about 10 seconds of material removal. That single incident does not establish a machine defect or a general failure rate, but it is a reason to select tooling and cutting parameters carefully and supervise operations.
The kit listing includes a 15-piece collet set. Shariff identifies a vise, MPG jogwheel, and end-mill set as accessories; its shop also lists a fourth axis and a 4-inch precision-ground vise. Make says the reviewed kit included a vise. Check the workholding, cutter shank sizes, and tool geometry required for your planned stock and operations before ordering. Shariff’s shop and accessory listings show the accessories it currently offers.

Commissioning and safety deserve deliberate attention
Make’s review records several issues encountered on that team’s machine: an oil pump that did not flow, attributed in the article to stiffer-than-specified supplier springs and resolved by replacing them; and a coolant pump that did not trigger through Mach3, leading the reviewer to consider using the front panel. These are reported incidents from one build, not established rates across machines. They do, however, make it sensible to verify lubrication and coolant operation during commissioning rather than assuming every system is working because it is installed.
The reviewer also found the software-mediated emergency stop took several seconds to halt the machine and suggested having a reachable power cutoff. This is one reviewer’s observation, not a general safety certification or assessment. Before operation, consult the machine’s current documentation and establish a suitable emergency-stop and power-isolation arrangement for your installation. Do not rely on an unverified software response as your only means of stopping hazardous motion.
Who should consider the Shariff DMC2 Mini?
- It may fit: a small shop or capable hobbyist that needs the published work envelope and spindle specification, can accommodate the machine and its motor clearance, and has time and skill for assembly, alignment, and CNC setup.
- Think carefully if: you need a predictable ready-to-cut schedule, lack experience with mechanical assembly and wiring, or require independently demonstrated accuracy for a particular production tolerance.
- Before ordering: verify the voltage and supply, confirm current price and kit/assembled contents, budget for a computer if needed and for fluids, consider suitable tooling and workholding, and review commissioning and safety requirements.
The available evidence supports evaluating the DMC2 Mini on its published capacity and your willingness to build and commission it. It does not establish a fair head-to-head advantage over competing mills or independently prove the maker’s accuracy claims.
