How to Build a Foam Machine With a Leaf Blower and Water Pump

A foam machine combines a pump-fed spray nozzle, wet fabric membrane and ducted blower air. Here’s what one DIY build reports—and what to check before trying it.

A DIY foam machine uses a pump to keep a soapy solution on a fabric membrane while a blower pushes air through it. The result is a stream of bubbles that collect into foam. A leaf blower or blower-vac can provide the air for a lower-cost build, but a maker’s 2019 project found that this approach produced less foam and more noise than a large industrial extractor fan. Treat the dimensions and flow figures below as starting points from that one build—not universal specifications—and plan carefully for water near electrical equipment.

How the foam machine works

The principle is similar to blowing bubbles. A wet, soapy film spans the small openings in a fabric membrane; air passing through the film creates many bubbles at once, which gather into foam. The pump and spray nozzle continually wet the membrane so it can keep producing bubbles.

In the reported arrangement, fabric is stretched across the opening of a bucket that forms the foam cone. A water line and nozzle and a ducted air inlet enter below the fabric. Other gaps are sealed so the blower’s air is directed through the membrane. The build author routed air through a bend to spread and slow the initially narrow, fast-moving stream. These are construction choices described in a first-person project, not tested design requirements. Hackaday’s 2019 build account explains the arrangement.

Parts and reported setup

Part Role What the build report says
Tank Holds the foam solution for the pump. The author reused a plastic barrel and washed it several times. That is the author’s choice, not a general recommendation for containers or stored liquids.
Pump and water line Moves solution from the tank to the spray nozzle. The author suggested a pump delivering about 10 liters per minute with a few meters of head as potentially suitable, and used a high-flow submersible pump. This is an estimate from one build, not a verified minimum for all layouts.
Foam solution Creates the wet film on the membrane. The article reports a 2% soapy-water mixture as DIY guidance and describes the author’s own mixture. It does not establish a universal ratio or verify skin-contact safety for any particular product.
Air supply and ducting Pushes air through the wet membrane. The project used blower-vacs on their vacuum setting, with ducting to carry air to the cones. The author described this option as cheaper and functional, but noisier and lower-output than a large industrial extractor fan.
Membrane, cone and nozzle Forms the bubble-producing surface and directs the liquid and air. The author describes cotton fabric, such as an old T-shirt, stretched and secured over a bucket opening, with a side air inlet and irrigation sprinkler nozzle. Gaps were sealed to direct the airflow.
Shutoff taps and flow controls Stop or adjust liquid flow. The author added taps after encountering leaks, hoses slipping off, and siphoning.

For any pump, check its rated flow and head against the actual hose length, elevation and nozzle arrangement. The article’s approximate figure is not enough to select a pump for a different build on its own.

Choosing a leaf blower or a larger fan

A leaf blower or blower-vac offers a lower-cost way to supply air, according to the Hackaday builder, but it should not be treated as equivalent to a large extractor fan. The project report says the industrial fan moved more air and produced more foam; it supplies no measured airflow, output, noise level or controlled comparison.

  • Cost and access: The builder used blower-vacs as a cheaper, functional option. Whether that is economical depends on what equipment you already have.
  • Foam output: The reported larger extractor fan delivered more air and yielded more foam. No numerical output comparison is available.
  • Noise: The blower-vac approach was described as noisy; the report does not quantify sound levels.
  • Ducting and moisture: Ducting can route air from a blower positioned away from the wet cone, but it does not by itself make the electrical setup safe.

The same builder observed better output when the cones were mounted flat on a table rather than hung, but did not determine why. Treat this as an observation from that project, not a general rule.

Build and test with leak control in mind

  1. Set up the tank, pump and feed line. Arrange the pump to draw solution from the tank and send it to the nozzle. Verify the pump rating against your installation rather than relying on the article’s rule of thumb alone.
  2. Make the cone and membrane. Stretch and secure fabric across the bucket opening. Fit the water nozzle and ducted air inlet below it, then seal unintended gaps so air travels through the membrane.
  3. Route the blower air. Use ducting to connect the blower to the cone and keep the blower away from the wet area. The reported project used a bend to distribute the concentrated air stream.
  4. Fit shutoff controls and check connections. The build author reported hoses slipping off barbs, holes in lines, siphoning without a stop valve and a burst hose. Taps at several points allowed that builder to stop and adjust flow; they are a practical control, not a guarantee against leaks.
  5. Test in a controlled area with a clear shutoff plan. Watch for leaks, hose movement and unexpected siphoning, and stop the pump and blower if water or foam approaches electrical equipment.

Keep electrical equipment out of wet conditions

Foam and water can reach cords, blower housings and connections, so position equipment to prevent contact during normal operation and foreseeable leaks. The build author recommends elevating blowers and using ducting to keep them away from the cone, but elevation alone does not make a machine electrically safe.

OSHA’s Electrical Safety guidance says, “Never operate electrical equipment while you are standing in water.” It advises inspecting cords and equipment in damp locations, using a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), and having equipment that has become wet inspected by a qualified electrician before energizing it.

For workplace settings, OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.303 states that, unless identified for use in the operating environment, conductors or equipment must not be located in damp or wet locations or where exposed to liquids that could deteriorate them. These are workplace safety references; applicable requirements depend on the jurisdiction and setting. A DIY arrangement is not certified by following the maker’s description.
