Clean and dry both sets of threads, apply a thin film to the engaged male threads while leaving the first thread bare, tighten to the manufacturer’s torque specification, and allow the sealant’s stated cure time before filling or pressurizing the system.
Confirm the joint requires thread sealant
Check the vehicle or equipment service manual for the thread type, torque, approved sealant, and sealing method. A drain plug or other fastener may rely on a crush washer, O-ring, gasket, or tapered thread; these arrangements are not interchangeable. Do not add sealant to a joint that depends on a mechanical seal unless the manual allows it.
Sealant cannot repair damaged threads, compensate for the wrong thread form, or replace a missing washer or failed O-ring. The manual controls whether sealant belongs on the joint and what chemistry is approved.
Choose a product for the job
Thread sealant fills the spiral path between threads to help prevent fluid or pressure leaks. Threadlocker is primarily intended to resist loosening. Some products combine sealing and locking functions, but color alone does not identify the right product. Consider the joint’s sealing needs, thread type, whether it must later be removed, temperature, fluid exposure, substrate, and cure time.
#1 Best Overall
- Economical general-purpose fitting sealant
- Outperforms tapes and pipe dopes
- Seals and resists pressure in air, oil, diesel fuel and hydraulic systems
- Remains pliable at higher and lower temperatures
- Suggested Applications: Air conditioning fittings, temperature sending fittings, hydraulic fittings
| Product or type | Function and suitable applications | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Permatex High Performance Thread Sealant | Formulated for metal tapered threads. Permatex lists head bolts into through holes, oil-pressure sensors, oil and coolant lines, fuel fittings, and rear-axle fill plugs among its applications. Permatex product page | Manufacturer data gives a 10,000 PSI maximum pressure claim; this is a product specification, not a guarantee for every engine or joint. Its 2019 technical data sheet reports 24 hours at room temperature for full cure. Permatex technical data sheet |
| Permatex Seal+Lock | A combined sealant and medium-strength thread compound. Listed automotive uses include threaded freeze plugs, oil-pressure sensors, fuel-line supply nuts and bolts, fuel injectors, coolant-temperature sensors, power-steering cooler lines, brake-line nuts, and A/C systems. Permatex product page | Manufacturer technical data says full strength can take up to 72 hours; conditions and activation affect cure. Permatex technical data sheet |
| Medium-strength threadlocker | Intended to resist loosening; Permatex describes its medium-strength blue threadlocker as removable with hand tools. Permatex threadlocker information | Permatex reports a temperature range of −54°C to +149°C (−65°F to +300°F) for its medium-strength threadlocker products. Check the specific product sheet for the exact formulation and application. |
Loctite notes that threadlocker products vary in temperature tolerance and removal method, and recommends clean threads free of oil or dirt. Apply sealant step by step
- Identify the specification. Find the joint in the service manual and confirm its thread form, torque, sealant requirement, and any washer, O-ring, or gasket. If the instructions do not call for sealant, do not add it.
- Remove old material and contamination. Take out the fastener. Scrape or brush off cured residue without nicking or damaging the threads. Clean the fastener and threaded hole with a residue-free cleaner, such as brake-and-parts cleaner, then let both dry. Permatex directs users to clean and dry parts before applying its thread sealants. Permatex High Performance Thread Sealant directions Permatex Seal+Lock directions
- Check the metal and product directions. Anaerobic products can cure more slowly on stainless steel, plated metals, and some aluminum surfaces. Use the specified activator when the product’s technical data calls for one on the substrate. Permatex technical data sheet Permatex Seal+Lock directions
- Apply a controlled film. Knead the tube if the directions require it. Apply product to the engaged male threads, leaving the first thread free of sealant, as Permatex instructs. Permatex High Performance Thread Sealant directions For Seal+Lock, the manufacturer specifies about three-quarters of a thread turn; coating every thread is unnecessary. Permatex Seal+Lock directions
- Install and torque. Start the fastener by hand to avoid cross-threading, then tighten it to the vehicle or equipment manufacturer’s specified torque. There is no universal engine-bolt or plug torque supplied by the sealant manufacturer.
- Wipe away squeeze-out. Clean excess from outside the joint before it cures. Keep sealant out of oil galleries, coolant passages, and sensors.
- Wait before filling or pressurizing. Follow the chosen product’s cure instructions as well as the service manual. Permatex’s High Performance Thread Sealant data sheet (revision 02/19) reports full cure at room temperature in 24 hours and recommends at least 24 hours for maximum pressure and solvent resistance. Permatex technical data sheet Seal+Lock documentation says full strength can take up to 72 hours, depending on conditions and activation. Permatex Seal+Lock information
- Check the joint in operation. After the specified wait and any service-manual requirements are met, refill or pressurize the system. Inspect for leaks at idle and again after the first heat cycle.
Why application details matter
Keep sealant off the first thread
Permatex directs users to leave the first thread free when sealing male threads. Applying a controlled amount to the engaged threads avoids unnecessary excess; for Seal+Lock, its directions specify about three-quarters of a thread turn rather than coating every thread.

Do not substitute torque or cure time
Sealant does not set the fastener’s torque. Tighten only to the vehicle or equipment maker’s specification, and do not infer a cure time from another product in the same brand or color family. The figures above are manufacturer specifications under their stated product conditions, not universal guarantees for every engine.
Do not treat threadlocker color as a specification
Red, blue, or other product colors do not establish suitability for a sealing joint. Match the product to the joint and consult its technical data for substrate preparation, temperature, fluid compatibility, removal, and cure requirements.
