Dried citrus slices can give candle projects a warm, natural look, but they should not be placed where a burning candle’s flame or melt pool can reach them. For dried-fruit decoration, choose an unlit display or a wickless wax sachet that is not meant to be burned or melted. The fruit’s appearance is established; the cited guidance does not establish that it reliably scents a burning candle.
Can I add dried botanicals to candles?
Not if the candle is intended to burn and the dried fruit could reach the flame or liquid wax. Dried fruit is flammable, so keep it out of a burning candle’s flame path and melt pool. If you want the look, make the piece explicitly unlit-only or use a wickless wax project that is not meant to be burned or melted.
Why dried fruit near a flame is a safety concern
The National Candle Association (NCA) warns about flammable materials embedded in wax near the flame. As wax melts, inclusions can enter the liquid wax pool and be exposed to heat and flame; wax coating may allow them to sustain a flame. The NCA’s 2022 report on botanical candles describes the concern and says it purchased several candles for testing under ASTM Candle Fire Safety Procedures at an independent third-party laboratory. Its accessible summary does not provide a readable numerical outcome, so it does not support a specific failure count.
CandleScience also cautions that dried botanicals can ignite if too close to the flame or be drawn toward the wick by moving wax. They may contribute to an uneven melt pool or clog the wick, affecting how a candle performs. A decorative outer layer is not a substitute for keeping flammable material away from the flame and melt pool.

Choose an unlit display or wax sachet for dried-fruit decor
For a project that includes dried orange slices or other fruit, make its unlit-only status clear. CandleScience lists dried fruit slices and silicone molds among materials for wax sachets, which are decorative and are not meant to be burned or melted. A sachet can provide fragrance from the wax without a wick; that is different from claiming the dried fruit will scent a burning candle.

Use ordinary candles according to their safety labels
For candles intended to burn, follow the maker’s directions and the label. The NCA identifies “Burn within sight” and “Keep away from combustibles” as candle-label rules, and advises keeping candles away from children and pets. Its candle-label guidance explains these instructions. Dried fruit is combustible, so it does not belong near a lit candle.
