For most vegetables, aim for about 10 to 12 inches of usable soil if the bed sits on suitable, loosened ground. An open-bottom bed can use that soil beneath the frame, so its boards do not need to be as tall as the full root zone. On concrete or another impermeable surface, the bed must contain the entire rooting depth: leafy greens, beans, and cucumbers need at least 8 inches, while peppers, tomatoes, and squash call for 12 to 24 inches under University of Maryland Extension guidance.
Measure rooting depth, not just the frame
Bed height and soil depth are related but not interchangeable. In a bed with no bottom, roots may grow through the bed into healthy, loosened soil below it. The usable rooting depth is the soil in the frame plus the suitable ground beneath it—not simply the height of the boards.
Utah State University Extension says a 6- to 12-inch-high box accommodates most vegetable roots when it is open to the soil below, and advises tilling that soil. Colorado State University Extension says bed height may matter little when roots can reach the ground, but recommends 8 to 12 inches of soil where the underlying soil is unsuitable. Delaware Extension recommends at least 1 foot for a productive garden, while Georgia Extension advises at least 10 inches for most garden crops. These are context-specific guidance ranges, not a single experimentally established threshold.
How deep should a raised bed be on concrete?
On pavement, concrete, or another impermeable base, roots cannot reach soil or moisture below. The full rooting zone must fit inside the bed. University of Maryland Extension, in guidance updated March 26, 2026, recommends these minimums for beds on hard surfaces:

| Crop | Recommended soil depth |
|---|---|
| Leafy greens, beans, and cucumbers | At least 8 inches |
| Peppers, tomatoes, and squash | 12 to 24 inches |
These depths refer to soil available to roots, not necessarily the outside height of the structure. Allow for any drainage layer or unfilled space when calculating how much usable soil the finished bed will contain. Hard-surface beds can dry faster and may be exposed to reflected or absorbed heat, so plan to check moisture regularly. Georgia Extension notes that 10 inches may not be enough for some crops, including potatoes, on a hard surface.
How deep for tomatoes and root vegetables?
Tomatoes
For a tomato bed on concrete or another hard surface, use 12 to 24 inches of soil, following Maryland Extension’s crop-specific recommendation. In an open-bottom bed over suitable ground, the roots can extend below the frame, so the frame itself does not have to contain the entire root zone.

Carrots, potatoes, and other root crops
There is no single depth that fits every root crop. Loose raised-bed soil can benefit deep-rooted crops such as carrots, but the required depth varies by crop and by whether roots can reach the native ground. Potatoes may need more than 10 inches when grown over a hard surface, according to Georgia Extension. For a sealed-base bed, choose depth for the crop rather than assuming a general vegetable-bed minimum will suffice.
Can a raised garden bed be only 6 inches deep?
It can work as a low border over healthy, loosened ground, because roots can grow into the soil beneath it. Utah State Extension’s 6- to 12-inch box guidance assumes access to underlying soil. A 6-inch bed on concrete, compacted ground, or soil unsuitable for roots is a different design: the plants have only the soil contained within the bed, so that shallow depth will not meet every crop’s needs.

Choose working height separately from soil depth
A taller structure can make gardening easier to reach, reduce bending, or allow seated gardening. That ergonomic height is a design choice, not a signal that plants need an equally deep root zone. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach describes raised-bed heights from 6 inches to 20 inches or more; Georgia Extension gives 24 inches as an accessibility example and 36 inches as a height that can reduce bending. These are examples, not universal accessibility specifications.
Reach across the bed matters too. Iowa State recommends a width of about 3 to 4 feet when gardeners can access both sides, or 1.5 to 2 feet when the bed is against a wall. Choose width and height around the gardener’s reach and working position.

Prepare the soil for the site
Over healthy native ground
If the ground drains well and is not compacted, Maryland Extension advises adding 2 to 4 inches of compost and working it into the top 4 inches of soil. Iowa State recommends incorporating the bed mix into the existing ground to avoid a distinct layer that could impede water movement and root growth. Loosen the ground beneath an open-bottom bed before filling it.
On a hard surface
For beds on hard surfaces, Maryland Extension recommends a 1:1 mix of compost and soilless growing mix. It permits topsoil up to 20% by volume in beds at least 16 inches deep. Because roots depend on moisture held within the bed, check the soil regularly and water as needed.

Decide on depth before building
- Check the base. Determine whether the bed will be open to usable soil or rest on concrete, pavement, or another impermeable surface.
- Identify the crops. Use the crop-specific guidance for hard-surface beds; for open-ground beds, account for the additional suitable soil roots can reach below the frame.
- Calculate usable soil. Measure the soil available to roots after accounting for the frame and any space that will not be filled with planting mix.
- Set working dimensions. Choose height for comfortable access and width for reach, separately from the depth the crops need.
- Plan soil and watering. Loosen suitable native ground and blend amendments into it, or use a contained growing mix over hardscape and monitor moisture.
