Literary references and Kashmir’s reported pre-Islamic gardens and orchards point to earlier traditions, though the sources cited here do not establish the physical layouts of those early gardens. Mughal gardens later combined Persian and Timurid ideas with local terrain and water, producing formal designs that varied by region.
What are the earliest known gardens in India?
There is evidence of garden culture in India before the Mughal period, but the evidence needs to be read carefully. Works associated with Kālidāsa, Śūdraka and Bāṇabhaṭṭa refer to gardens. The UNESCO Tentative List submission for Kashmir also describes pre-Islamic wooded pleasure gardens, known as vatikas, and orchard traditions. These accounts support the existence of gardens; they do not, by themselves, establish their precise layouts or surviving physical form.
Encyclopaedia Iranica notes that archaeologists have not discovered garden remains from the early periods it discusses, despite the long literary record. The available evidence therefore does not provide a complete archaeological chronology of early gardens across India, nor does it settle the date or design of every early garden. Encyclopaedia Iranica’s account of gardens distinguishes literary testimony from discovered remains.
How did Persian and Timurid ideas shape Mughal gardens?
Persian and Timurid garden ideas influenced Mughal design as they moved into South Asia, but they were adapted rather than simply imposed. The formal garden could organize space through geometry, terraces, a central axis and water channels or basins. Walls and planting framed the composition. Water availability and landscape affected how these elements worked in practice.

Bagh-e Babur in Kabul, Afghanistan, illustrates this tradition in a comparative context; it is not a garden in India. UNESCO’s Tentative List nomination says Babur founded it after conquering Kabul in 1504, and that it became his tomb garden after his death. The nomination describes its terraces, central axis, channels, basins, perimeter walls and planting. It also says the earliest known gardens in India date to the thirteenth or fourteenth century and lacked standardized layouts, while landscape gardening gained considerable momentum under Babur. These are statements in the nomination, not a final UNESCO World Heritage inscription finding. UNESCO’s Bagh-e Babur Tentative List entry provides the account.
Why does Kashmir have a distinct garden history?
Kashmir’s garden history includes more than Mughal design. Its UNESCO Tentative List submission describes earlier vatikas and orchards, followed by Sultanate-era gardens and later Persian influence. Mughal gardens in the region adapted formal design to mountainous terrain, using terraces and available water. This history shows how inherited customs, outside influences and local conditions could shape gardens together rather than in a simple sequence of replacement.

What makes Humayun’s Tomb a landmark?
In Delhi, Humayun’s Tomb provides a clear example of the later Mughal garden-tomb tradition. India’s Ministry of Culture dates the monument to 1570, calls it the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent, and describes its charbagh-style garden setting. The ministry connects the synthesis of Persian elements and Indian craftsmanship there with later Mughal monuments, including the Taj Mahal. The Ministry of Culture’s Humayun’s Tomb page gives this account.
