For the most durable, finished-looking edge on plywood or MDF, glue on a solid-wood strip. Iron-on veneer banding is faster and thinner, while a routed tongue-and-groove or V-groove joint can help keep solid edging aligned during glue-up. The right choice depends on how much wear the edge will take, whether a shelf needs extra stiffness, and how much machining you want to do.
The methods and workflow below follow guidance from WOOD Magazine, updated March 6, 2025.
Choose the edging method for the job
| Method | Application and alignment | Durability and stiffness | Tools and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron-on veneer banding | Quick to apply; heat activates its pre-applied adhesive. No clamps are needed. | Thin veneer covers the edge but is more fragile than solid-wood edging. It does not add the same substantial thickness as a wood strip. | Requires a household iron and a round tool shank for light burnishing. A fast, low-profile option. |
| Solid-wood strip, butt joint | Glue a ripped strip directly to the panel edge. Careful clamping keeps it in place. | Added thickness resists chipping better than thin veneer banding; wider or thicker edging can stiffen a shelf. | Requires a suitable strip, glue, clamps, and trimming. A practical choice for many projects. |
| Solid-wood strip with a V-groove or tongue-and-groove joint | Mating profiles self-center and reduce edging movement on wet glue. | The joint provides more glue surface than a basic butt joint, but the source gives no measured strength comparison. | Requires a router table, a matching bit set, setup, and test cuts. More machining than a butt joint. |
These are qualitative trade-offs, not results from controlled strength or shelf-load tests. For a simple panel, a butt joint is a sound, uncomplicated approach: WOOD Magazine describes it as plenty strong for plywood no longer than 3 feet and 3/4 inch thick. That guidance is specific to those dimensions, not a universal load rating.
Apply iron-on veneer banding
Pre-glued veneer tape is the quickest way to cover an exposed edge when a thin finish is appropriate. Heat it with a household iron to soften the adhesive, then burnish it lightly with a round tool shank. The process avoids clamps, but the thin veneer is less resistant to damage than a solid-wood strip.

Glue on solid-wood edging
Use a butt joint for a straightforward edge
Rip a strip from a usable offcut or plank, apply glue, and press it against the panel edge. For an unobtrusive transition, choose a strip whose grain and color work with the panel veneer. The extra thickness helps protect the edge from chipping; making the edging wider or thicker than the sheet stock can also add stiffness to a shelf.
Use a routed joint when alignment matters
Two-piece V-groove or tongue-and-groove edging-bit sets create matching profiles that self-center. The interlocking fit can make it easier to keep the strip aligned as you clamp it and increases the glue surface compared with a plain butt joint. The trade-off is setup and machining: the source names MLCS Woodworking and Infinity Cutting Tools as sellers of such bits, but does not establish current availability.

Route and glue a self-centering joint
- Set up for control. Use a router table for support and control, except when the workpiece is too large for that setup. Make test cuts in matching scrap and adjust the bit and fence before routing the panel.
- Route the sheet stock first. For stock 3/4 inch thick or thinner, set the fence to remove only enough material to leave a crisp veneer edge. Taking off more may require an outfeed-fence shim.
- Prepare the tongue stock. Start with a hardwood blank at least 4 inches wide and 1/8 inch thicker than the panel. Rout the tongue, then rip the blank to the required edging width.
- Clamp without letting the strip skate. Use parallel-jaw clamps or one-handed bar clamps with jaws that do not rotate. Circular pads that rotate can make the edging slip while the glue is wet.
Trim the edging without making the panel undersize
For a panel with one edged side, leave the panel oversize while you glue on the strip. After the glue dries, use a flush-trim bit to bring the edging level with the face. A trim router is less likely to tip than a larger router; if using a larger one, temporary support pieces can help stabilize it.
Sand or plane the edge smooth, then rip the panel to its final width along the unfinished back edge. If both long edges will be finished, begin with a narrower panel and rip it to final size after installing both strips. This sequence lets you remove any variation in the two finished edges while sizing the panel.

Wrap edging around corners
For edging that continues around a corner, miter the strips to fit. Glue them in place, let the adhesive cure, and then flush-trim the edging. Plan the corner fit before glue-up so the miters meet cleanly.
