Glass vs. Tempered Glass: What’s the Difference?

Tempered glass is heat-treated annealed glass. It is stronger in manufacturer guidance and typically breaks into smaller fragments, but the best glass depends on the opening, hazards and local requirements.

In this comparison, “glass” usually means ordinary annealed glass. Tempered glass is that same basic material after heat treatment: it is stronger in many applications and usually breaks into smaller pieces, but it is not unbreakable or harmless when broken. The right choice depends on the opening, the risks around it, and applicable local requirements.

What is the difference between ordinary glass and tempered glass?

Ordinary flat glass is generally annealed: it is cooled slowly after forming to reduce internal stresses. Tempered glass—also called toughened glass—starts as annealed glass, is fabricated to its required size and shape, then heated and rapidly cooled. The process creates compression at the pane’s surfaces and changes how it responds to stress and breakage. Pilkington explains this process in its Gl@ssary and technical bulletin ATS-186.

Tempering changes the glass’s stress profile, not its basic hardness or stiffness. Pilkington North America’s ATS-186 bulletin, dated January 16, 2013, states that tempering does not change glass hardness or Young’s modulus.

How much stronger is tempered glass?

Pilkington’s technical guidance describes tempered glass as about four times stronger than comparable annealed glass. It describes heat-strengthened glass as about twice as strong as annealed glass. These are approximate manufacturer comparisons, not guarantees for every pane, thickness, edge condition, framing system, or installation. Actual performance depends on the product and how it is specified and installed.

How does each type break?

Type Typical breakage behavior What that means
Annealed glass Tends to break into larger pieces with sharp edges. Broken fragments can present a serious injury hazard.
Tempered glass Typically breaks into many smaller fragments. The break pattern can reduce the risk of severe injury, but broken glass can still hurt someone.
Heat-strengthened glass Generally breaks more like annealed glass, with larger pieces. It adds strength but is not safety glass under the cited Pilkington guidance.
Laminated glass An interlayer is designed to hold broken pieces together. It may suit situations where fragment retention or resistance to penetration matters; it is not interchangeable with tempered glass.

Tempered glass can still break because of impact, edge damage, installation problems, loading, or thermal stress. A smaller-fragment break pattern is not a promise that a pane is safe to touch or that it will remain in place.

Tempered, heat-strengthened, and laminated glass compared

Type How it is made Strength in Pilkington guidance Practical distinction
Annealed Slowly cooled to reduce internal stresses. Baseline. Ordinary glass in this comparison; it can be cut and processed before further treatment.
Tempered Heated and rapidly cooled after fabrication. About four times annealed glass. Improves strength and changes the breakage pattern; commonly used where safety glazing or greater thermal-stress resistance is needed.
Heat-strengthened Heat-treated, with slower cooling than fully tempered glass. About twice annealed glass. Can add strength for some wind-load or thermal-stress situations, but breaks more like annealed glass and is not safety glass according to the cited guidance.
Laminated Two or more glass layers bonded with an interlayer. A comparable strength multiple is not stated in the cited guidance. The interlayer is designed to retain fragments after breakage.

The strength comparisons in this table are approximate figures from Pilkington North America / NSG Group’s ATS-186 technical guidance, dated January 16, 2013. They should not be read as a performance rating for a particular installed pane.

Where is tempered glass commonly used?

Manufacturer guidance lists doors and side panels, shopfronts and entrances, partitions, shower enclosures, furniture, and some facade applications as common uses for toughened glass, subject to proper specification and applicable rules. A product being common in one of these settings does not establish that a particular pane is suitable for every opening. Pilkington’s toughened glass guidance discusses typical applications.

When might another glass type make more sense?

Choose based on how the opening is used

Consider whether people may collide with the pane, whether it is near a door or another impact zone, and what should happen if it breaks. Tempered glass changes the strength and fracture pattern. Laminated glass is designed to hold fragments together, so it may be relevant when retention or resistance to penetration is important. Neither name alone settles the specification.

Account for heat and shading

Sunlight can warm the center of a pane more than shaded or framed edges. That temperature difference creates thermal stress; fracture can occur if the stress exceeds the pane’s capacity. Pilkington’s thermal stress calculator guidance says a proposed pane should be assessed against the safe temperature difference for its installation. Glass type, exposure, shading, and edge conditions all matter.

Check the applicable rules for the actual project

Safety-glazing requirements depend on location and installation. There is no single rule that can responsibly be applied to every door, partition, facade, barrier, floor, or overhead-glazing project from the glass type alone. The relevant jurisdiction, dimensions, thickness, support and framing, impact exposure, and any retention or security needs are needed to determine the specification. For consequential installations, get project-specific guidance from a qualified glazier or design professional. Pilkington’s Glass and Human Impact guidance addresses the relationship between glazing and impact risk.

Can tempered glass be cut or drilled after it is made?

No. Cutting, drilling, and edge work must be completed before tempering. Working on an already-tempered pane can cause it to break. Provide the required dimensions, holes, and edge details before manufacture, and have the supplier or glazier confirm the final specification. Pilkington also discusses fabrication in its Glass Fabrication guidance.

How can you tell whether a pane is tempered?

Appearance alone is not a reliable universal way to confirm all safety or performance properties. Check product markings and documentation, and ask the supplier or glazier to confirm the glass type and specification for the installation. A visual guess is not a substitute for that confirmation.
