Yes, but only with a CO₂ laser system specifically designed and approved for aluminum cutting. Do not assume a standard CO₂ engraver can cut aluminum safely: the metal reflects CO₂ laser energy strongly, and reflected energy can damage the laser or its beam-delivery optics. Check the exact machine with its manufacturer before attempting a cut.
Why aluminum is difficult for a CO₂ laser
Aluminum reflects CO₂ laser radiation strongly. Until the beam delivers enough energy to the material, much of that energy may be reflected rather than absorbed. A reflected beam can travel back through the beam-delivery optics toward the laser and damage equipment, as TWI explains in its guidance on laser cutting aluminum.
The interaction can change as the metal heats and melts, so reflectance is not a single fixed value throughout a cut. A CDC-hosted technical paper tabulates 97% reflectance for aluminum at 10.6 μm under the conditions represented in its table; that figure is not a universal value for every alloy, surface finish, or stage of cutting. The paper also discusses reflectance changing as sufficient energy melts or disrupts the surface. Read the CDC/NIOSH paper on optical radiation hazards in CO₂ laser welding.
Alloy composition matters too. TWI notes that alloying elements generally reduce aluminum’s reflectivity, which can make pure aluminum harder to process than a more traditional 5000-series alloy. That does not establish that any particular alloy or thickness is suitable for a given machine.

When a CO₂ laser can cut aluminum
CO₂ laser cutting of aluminum is possible in suitable systems, but machine capability depends on more than the laser type. Material and thickness, required edge quality and accuracy, machine configuration, and safeguards against reflected energy all matter. Trotec notes that metal cutting is possible in principle with both CO₂ and fiber lasers, while describing its own cutting applications as optimized for nonmetallic materials and noting restrictions for metallic applications. It recommends evaluating and testing the specific application. See Trotec’s guidance on laser metal processing.
There is no universal CO₂ wattage, speed, or maximum aluminum thickness that can be treated as safe or reliable across machines and alloys. The sources do not establish a general maximum thickness. Follow the machine maker’s approved specifications for the exact model and application rather than adapting settings from another laser.

What to verify before attempting a cut
- Get explicit manufacturer approval. Ask the supplier whether the exact system is designed and configured to cut the aluminum alloy and thickness you intend to use. TWI’s guidance is direct: “Always check with the laser supplier that the system is designed for processing aluminium before attempting to cut it.” TWI’s aluminum-cutting guidance.
- Confirm the application requirements. Specify the alloy, thickness, desired edge quality, and accuracy. A machine’s ability to process one metal or thickness does not prove it can meet a different job’s requirements.
- Ask about the system configuration and reflected-beam risk. Have the supplier confirm that the laser and beam-delivery system are designed for this reflective-metal application. A surface coating alone is not a complete solution: reflection can also come from the molten pool.
- Test only as the manufacturer directs. If the supplier approves the use, follow its process and safety instructions and evaluate the actual cut quality before relying on the result.
CO₂ versus fiber for aluminum
For reflective-metal cutting, a fiber laser is a more relevant category to investigate. Trotec describes fiber lasers as suitable for very reflective foils, including copper and brass, but that is not a guarantee that every fiber laser can cut every aluminum alloy or thickness. Verify the individual model and application.
| Consideration | CO₂ laser | Fiber laser |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum cutting | Possible in systems specifically designed and approved for the application; verify the model and job with the supplier. (TWI; Trotec) | A relevant category to investigate for reflective metals; capability still depends on the specific model and job. (Trotec) |
| Reflective-metal concern | Aluminum strongly reflects CO₂ radiation; reflected energy can damage the laser or beam-delivery optics. (TWI) | Trotec identifies fiber lasers as suitable for very reflective foils such as copper and brass; the cited guidance does not establish capability for every aluminum application. |
| Factors to confirm | Alloy, thickness, quality and accuracy requirements, system configuration, and supplier approval. (TWI; Trotec) | Specific model capability, alloy, thickness, cut quality, and accuracy. (Trotec) |
For occasional work, compare the effort and risk of buying suitable equipment with having a specialist metal-cutting service do the job. For regular production, evaluate purpose-built equipment against the alloys, thicknesses, accuracy, and edge quality your work requires. Neither choice removes the need to confirm the specific process.

Can a CO₂ engraver cut through aluminum?
Do not infer cutting ability from a machine’s ability to mark metal. A CO₂ laser may mark bare metal when used with a metal marking compound, but that compound enables a surface mark; it does not demonstrate that the laser can cut through the aluminum itself. Epilog’s compatibility guide describes marking applications, not proof of aluminum through-cutting capability. See Epilog’s CO₂ and fiber engraver material compatibility guide.
