Yes—many 3-way lighting circuits can use a dimmer, but the dimmer must be designed for that setup. Depending on the model, the second wall location may keep a mechanical 3-way switch, require a matched companion control, or use a compatible wireless remote. Check the exact device instructions before buying or changing wiring.
What a 3-way dimmer setup can do
A 3-way circuit lets two wall locations control the same light. Adding a compatible dimmer can provide dimming from one location while the other location only switches the light. Other systems use a matched companion control so brightness can be adjusted from both locations. Which arrangement works depends on the dimmer model.
Do not assume that an ordinary single-pole dimmer can replace either switch. The device must explicitly support the intended 3-way arrangement, and its wiring and setup requirements must match the circuit.

Check the bulbs and fixture before choosing a dimmer
Confirm that the dimmer supports the actual lamp or fixture type and load. For LED lighting, check the exact bulb model against the dimmer maker’s compatibility information rather than relying only on a general label such as “dimmable.” Lutron directs users of its MACL-153M model to its LED compatibility tool and specifies a model-specific minimum load: Lutron LED compatibility tool.

LED lamps can flicker or glow faintly in some dimmer-and-switch combinations. Leviton notes that an illuminated 3-way switch can contribute to ghosting or flicker with a dimmer locator light; turning off the locator light may reduce the chance: Leviton guidance on LED ghosting and flicker.
Check the wiring and device requirements
The common terminal on a 3-way switch is usually identified by a differently colored screw or a terminal marked COM; the two travelers connect the two switch locations. Wire color alone is not a reliable way to identify a conductor in every box. Before disconnecting the old switch, identify and label the common wire, then follow the wiring diagram for the replacement device. Do not apply one model’s wiring diagram to another model.

Neutral-wire requirements also vary by product. A Lutron guide for a particular product says to contact a licensed electrician if a neutral wire is not present; that instruction applies to the product covered by that guide, not every dimmer: Lutron product installation guide.

Turn off power at the breaker and verify that it is off with a suitable voltage tester before touching conductors. Lutron’s Caseta instructions warn that failing to verify power is off can result in serious injury or death: Lutron Caseta installation guidance. If you cannot identify the common wire, do not understand the selected device’s diagram, or encounter wiring that does not match the instructions, stop and contact a licensed electrician.
