Easy Steps: How to Hole Punch a Banner Like a Pro

Punching a banner is only the first step. This guide explains how to reinforce the edge, match the punch to the grommet, align mounting holes, and set each grommet securely.

To hole-punch a banner professionally, first choose the correct attachment method, reinforce the edge, mark the layout, and use a punch that matches the grommet or eyelet. A punched opening by itself is only a hole; a grommet installed with its washer and matching setting die creates the reinforced attachment point needed for repeated hanging.

1. Decide whether you need a hole, grommet, or pole pocket

Inspect the banner edge and plan how it will be mounted before cutting anything.

  • Bare punched hole: Suitable only for a temporary, low-stress attachment when the material and mounting method allow it.
  • Grommet or eyelet: The normal choice for ropes, zip ties, hooks, or frame hardware. It spreads the load and protects the opening when correctly installed.
  • Pole pocket: If the banner will slide over a pole or rod, a sewn pocket can avoid placing grommets in that area. Banners.com identifies pole pockets as an alternative for this type of installation.

Do not punch through a pocket, seam, printed hardware channel, or other construction feature unless its manufacturer specifically permits it.

2. Check the edge and reinforce it

Install a grommet in a hemmed edge whenever possible. Acosta warns that plain, cut PVC can tear around an eyelet. A hem, suitable webbing, or a purpose-made reinforcement system adds material for the grommet to grip.

BannerGrip’s frame instructions also require a hem. Its reinforcement requirement is specific to that frame application; tape or adhesive alone is not automatically an equivalent substitute for a proper hem in every banner or load condition.

Inspect before marking

  • Confirm the hem is fully closed and free of loose layers.
  • Look for existing grommets, seams, folds, pole pockets, and damaged areas.
  • Do not place a new hole so close to an edge that the material can split under tension.
  • For a damaged or heavily loaded banner, have a sign-finishing supplier add a new hem or reinforcement rather than relying on a cut edge.

3. Lay out the hole positions

Use the banner or frame maker’s specified layout first. For a standard hemmed banner, Banners.com describes 2 to 4 feet as typical grommet spacing, but its guidance also says spacing changes with banner size, material, and installation. Treat that range as a vendor recommendation, not a universal rule.

Keep the layout square and balanced

  1. Measure from the same reference edge for every mark.
  2. For top and bottom rows, transfer measurements with a straightedge so the grommets align vertically.
  3. Center the first and last positions so the end margins are similar unless the frame or mounting hardware specifies otherwise.
  4. Mark the center of each hole clearly on the hem, not just on the printed face.
  5. Dry-fit the banner against the mounting points before punching. Correcting a pencil mark is easier than repairing a misplaced hole.

When a frame manual specifies an edge distance, follow that value instead of a general spacing rule. BannerGrip’s manual, for example, says to place its hole about ¾ inch from the edge; that dimension belongs to that system.

4. Select a compatible punch and grommet

Match the punch diameter to the selected grommet or eyelet system. Acosta advises using a punch equal to the eyelet tube’s exact inner diameter. An oversized opening can leave the eyelet loose, while an undersized opening can distort the material or prevent the post from passing through.

A manufacturer’s punch size is not a universal standard. BannerGrip gives this system-specific instruction: “Using the red handled tool we supply or any standard ¼" hole punch, punch a hole in the hem about ¾" in from edge.” Do not apply that ¼-inch size to a different grommet without checking its dimensions.

Choose the tool for the job

Approach Best use Important limitation
Hand punch and setting kit Small banners and occasional work Must use the kit’s compatible punch, washer, die, and grommet size
Manual pliers Small eyelets up to 10 mm and small runs, according to Acosta Less suitable for large grommets or many pieces
Bench press Larger grommets or more than a handful of pieces, according to Acosta Requires the correct dies and a stable setup

A typical hand kit includes grommets, washers, a cutting tool, an insert punch, and a setting die or base. Confirm that every component is intended for the same grommet size and material thickness.

5. Punch the opening safely

  1. Put the banner on a firm, sacrificial wood block. Do not punch directly on concrete, a finished workbench, or a surface that can damage the cutter.
  2. Place the punch exactly over the marked center and keep it perpendicular to the banner.
  3. Strike the punch squarely with the tool recommended by the kit maker. Remove the cut plug and check that the opening is clean rather than torn.
  4. Test-fit the grommet post through the hole before setting it. If it is loose, stop and reassess the punch size and reinforcement instead of relying on the washer to hide the gap.

6. Set the grommet with its washer

Follow the instructions supplied with the particular kit; component shapes differ. The hand-kit sequence described by Banners.com is:

  1. Place the grommet post-up on the setting base.
  2. Center the banner hole over the post.
  3. Place the washer over the post with its rounded side facing up.
  4. Position the setting punch squarely on the washer and strike it with controlled blows.
  5. Turn the punch about a quarter turn between strikes, continuing until the grommet is snug.
  6. Inspect both faces. The grommet should be evenly rolled or flared, with no sharp distortion, loose washer, or cut extending into the hem.

For BannerGrip’s frame application, the finished grommet face is specified on the printed side. Use the orientation required by your own hardware when it differs.

7. Check the finished attachment point

  • Pull gently in the direction the banner will be loaded; the grommet should not rotate freely or pull through the hem.
  • Check that the surrounding material is flat and that no radial tear reaches the edge.
  • Confirm every top and bottom position lines up with its corresponding hook, bolt, or frame hole.
  • Use hardware that fits the grommet opening without forcing or enlarging it.

If a hole tears, the washer loosens, or the edge begins to stretch, take the banner down and reinforce or re-finish it. Adding another grommet immediately beside a failed one can weaken the same strip of material.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a generic punch size: Punch diameter must follow the selected grommet’s inner tube, not a familiar fraction from another kit.
  • Punching an unreinforced PVC edge: Plain cut PVC can tear around an eyelet.
  • Placing holes by eye: Uneven margins or vertically misaligned holes can overload individual attachment points.
  • Skipping the washer: The washer is part of the load-bearing assembly; use the matching component supplied for the grommet.
  • Striking at an angle: An angled punch or setting tool can deform the grommet and leave a weak, sharp edge.
  • Assuming spacing is universal: The 2-to-4-foot figure is typical guidance for standard banners, not a rule for every size, material, wind exposure, or frame.

When to use a professional finisher

Use a banner or sign-finishing service when the banner has no hem, carries substantial wind load, needs many grommets, uses thick or laminated material, or must be finished to a frame manufacturer’s exact specification. Acosta’s guidance favors a bench press for larger grommets or runs beyond a handful of pieces because it provides more consistent setting force than hand tools.
