The Easy Squares Table Topper is a 32½-inch square quilt made from five Four-Patch blocks, four green setting squares, and straight pieced borders. Its 8-inch finished blocks use ordinary 4½-inch fabric squares, so the project is a practical introduction to accurate quarter-inch piecing without curved seams, appliqué, or foundation paper piecing.
The official AllPeopleQuilt/American Patchwork & Quilting pattern was published June 14, 2013. It features Eva fabrics by BasicGrey for Moda, was inspired by “Orchard Lane” by Jill Abeloe Mead, and credits Kathleen Williams as quiltmaker.
Finished size and design
The finished topper measures 32½ inches square. Each Four-Patch finishes at 8 inches square. The center is laid out in three rows: five Four-Patch blocks are separated by four green setting squares, then framed with pieced borders.
All cutting and yardage in the pattern assumes 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton quilting fabric. The instructions use a ¼-inch seam allowance and assume right sides are together unless a step says otherwise.

Use quilting cottons with enough contrast that the plum-and-pink Four-Patches remain distinct from the green setting squares. Because the pattern calls for assorted prints, several coordinated fabrics can provide the scrappy look without changing the stated totals.

The block and border cutting quantities are exact pattern requirements. Keep the fabric groups separated and label pieces as you cut; the Four-Patch construction uses the same square size in more than one color.
How to make the Four-Patch blocks

Pair the 4½-inch plum and pink squares with right sides together. Sew with a consistent ¼-inch seam allowance.

Press the sewn units toward the plum prints. Accurate pressing keeps the seams flatter and helps adjoining seams nest.

Join the pressed pairs to form Four-Patch units. Each completed unit should measure 8½ inches square before it is sewn into the quilt center; it finishes at 8 inches after assembly.

Make five Four-Patch blocks. Rotate or distribute prints deliberately if you want a balanced scrappy appearance, while keeping the color placement clear.
Assemble the quilt center

Lay out the five Four-Patch blocks and four 8½-inch green setting squares in three rows, following the pattern arrangement. Check orientation and color balance before sewing.

Sew the pieces into rows. Press the row seams toward the setting squares where the construction allows.

Join the rows, then press the joined seams in one direction as instructed. Measure the center before adding borders; a square, accurately pieced center makes border attachment easier.
Piece and attach the borders
The borders are made from the green 4½ × 8½-inch rectangles together with the pink and plum 4½-inch squares. Assemble the short and long border strips according to the pattern layout, keeping the color sequence consistent on opposite sides.

Piece the border units, pressing seams so adjoining sections lie flat.

Attach the remaining borders to the other two edges, matching seams and easing only as needed. Press the completed topper flat.
Layer, quilt, and bind

Place the quilt backing, batting, and pieced top in layers. The specified batting is a 39-inch square, giving working room beyond the 32½-inch finished top.

Secure the layers using your preferred basting method.

Quilt as desired. The pattern does not prescribe a particular quilting design, so straight-line, walking-foot, free-motion, or hand quilting can all be selected to suit your equipment and the topper’s use.

Join the four 2½ × 42-inch binding strips, apply the binding around the quilt, and finish it using your preferred machine- or hand-sewn method.
Why this is an easy table-topper project
The pattern’s simplicity comes from its limited construction vocabulary: conventional Four-Patch piecing, large setting squares, and straight pieced borders. There are no curves or appliqué pieces to manage, and the block size is large enough for seams to be easy to inspect.
It is still worth treating the project as an accuracy exercise. A scant or inconsistent seam can change the 8½-inch unfinished block measurement, and small errors accumulate when several border units are joined. Test your quarter-inch seam on scrap fabric before cutting into the project pieces.
Technique and scale comparison
Within the American Patchwork & Quilting table-topper roundup, other projects use foundation paper piecing, appliqué, mitered borders, pinwheels, or different layouts. Compared with those approaches, Easy Squares relies on simpler rotary-cut shapes and straight seams. Its 32½-inch square finished size is large enough for a dining or occasional table but remains manageable for a first small quilt.
